Building a 1:1 replica Tamiya Subaru Brat - Update - 16/12/17 Finished? (links now fixed)

Recommended Posts

Many thanks for the comments - I am so sorry i've not kept this updated I lost enthusiasm when the pictures 'fell over' I will be updating this soon as it is much further on now. We are coming up to the holiday season so i'll have a bit more spare time, i've had a few requests through messages to try and fix the links. Unfortunately due to my work which is extremely busy at this time of year i've had no time to update. But will do so shortly.

If only but my work is linked to the cold weather and snow. So perhaps I may see him on my travels.

so the Brat was fully stripped and sent for painting to a guy local. Usual have as long as you need but keep costs down, There was quite a few dents on truck as well as the welded repairs. This used be a gamekeepers truck so when he used to hang his catch from the side the beaks and claws would dent the sides - there were loads dotted down the 1/4 panels. Plus both doors were badly damaged where barn doors had hit them. It was 28 year old truck after all..

while it was at the painters I obtained another set of wheels and had them banded to give a slightly wider look. banded to 6J

Old and new

I could have gone 7j but getting tyres to fit a 7J rim is really difficult so kept it simple.

Then I found an A bar from a Jeep Cherokee - thought that would work so took a punt and bought it. Slightly too wide so cut 6" from the middle, This is away being blasted as we speak.

then set these to the tube benders to make me a roll bar - measurements taken from the kit model x10 (after cross checking with the actual model)

Front end fitted as box art

24631256728_e1da49dd29_z.jpg20170826_171028 by Anglia305e, on Flickr

correct end caps fitted

Now the mouldings were a problem - UK mouldings are solid black and my original ones were goosed to be honest. Found these online which pretty much replicate the original box art. Had to use 3m double sided tape as the original glue was rubbish and would not stick. Not cheap as needed 2 lots plus the 3m tape but i'm pleased with the look.

and ready for MOT - nice dull miserable Yorkshire day

and in for MOT - for the observant among you yes the registration changed, I had a 1986 car that I swapped the number to this for the simple reason the chrome bumpers make it look older. J reg is 1991 and D is 1986 so more fitting with the age I was creating. As I had the plate it was just a transfer fee to swap.

26727387109_e51419cb06_z.jpg20171007_092527 by Anglia305e, on Flickr

So thats it - i will keep this updated as I still need to make the roll bar and A bar. I would love to photo shop the below image and make my own manual of the resto based on the original tamiya manual but thats somat i am no good at.

37763702275_c80e84d696_z.jpgbrat manual page 1 by Anglia305e, on Flickr

I do have the decals to add the subaru and 4wd decals however as yet i'm undecided, will make the decision when the A bar is fitted. I have the wheels painted and these need fitting - it has original size in the above picture as they are borrowed for the MOT. so will update the pic in due course..

Thanks for comments and support - I will keep it updated so not finished yet...

That's a long time to be spending with a hairdryer and window cleaner :P

Congratulations on the finish - your dedication and patience have really paid off with this handsome 1:1 tribute!

Thanks for the offer, better start building that boat. THE MOOSEY, nice, didn't recognize him without his lab coat on. Great work all of it and I am thinking you are now in the process to add this to the line up next year at Good Wood???? It would look ace with the Wheeler and SScorcher I have seen videos of this year.

Yeah I had help from professor Skid !!! It was a flipping long day though we finished about 7.30 pm (started at 10am) I've not spoke to the guys with the Scorcher recently but they do know of the project. In the new year i'll start sorting roll bar / a bar and then all the little details including the aerial !! I'm also going to place a driver in it on some board. fake body clips etc. Lots of ideas, I will keep it updated as I go along...

No word of a lie, I opened this thread, saw the first picture and thought, that's Yorkshire. The houses, the brickwork and colour pallette. Nice job, by the way.
