Kyosho ESC / Radio Compatibility

Recommended Posts

After getting back into RC after a 8 year hiatus, I am confused about the new radio gear.

I have 2 of 3 Circuit 1000 chassis fitted with Perfex KA-16H ESC's. These don't work with my old MX3 or Futaba radios. Presumably, I need Perfex radios.

The cars built for the family and I to run in backyard for fun, no racing or competitive driving. I see a lot if Mini-z stuff, can y'all reccomend a Perfex radio for 1/10?

Hi,

I don't see why that ESC shouldn't work with any receiver.

But you need to set up the ESC correctly wrt end points for your receiver and transmitter. There should be an instruction book that tells you how, or you can download it from here:

https://www.kyosho.com/jpn/support/instructionmanual/digital_prcs/pdf/82239%20PERFEX%20KA_16%20FET%20ESC_m.pdf

In the top picture I don't see a receiver at all.

If you can't figure it out from the manuals, show us some pictures of your complete wiring and I'm sure we can sort something out.

Modern 2.4 GHz radio gear is nice, have a look on the forum for various discussions with recommendations.

Here's the error code it flashes

And the one of the cars. The other has an MX3 with Hitec receiver.

Hi,

Does the servo work? Can you control steering?

If not, are you sure the plugs are in the right way? On some receivers it's pretty easy to put them in upside down.

If steering works, can you try switching the plugs over between steering and throttle? Can you now steer using the throttle?

I tried swapping wires in the connectors. No luck. ESC doesn't recognize the receivers.

I'm going to take the easy way out.

Someone recommend a Kyosho Perfex radio.

I'm sure a Perfex radio would work but I had terrible luck with mine that came with a Kyosho DBX 2.0. It lasted about 2 months before all channels started going bonkers (servos twitching with no user input) and it became unusable. I tried different servos but no luck. I researched the radio online and apparently I'm not alone.

I eventually got so frustrated that I just threw it in the trash...Might just be a fluke though that Kyosho has since corrected

I din't realize Kyosho still sold radios. I've never heard of a reason to stick with all one brand; my cars use a mix of radio gear and it all seems to get along well. If memory serves, Kyosho radios used to be made by JR (or was it KO?), so they're not really Kyosho anyway.

First thing to check: unplug the ESC, plug in a 4xAA battery holder (with 4 brand-new AAs in it) into the "BATT" slot, and see if the steering works. If it does, plug the steering servo into channel 2 and see if the steering now moves when you move the throttle. If both of those work, your radio is fine.

Next, verify that the plug on the ESC has the wires in the same order as the receiver. They should be universal these days, but make sure. Then go through the setup procedure for the ESC from square one, just to make sure you didn't miss something.

If it still doesn't work after that, the ESC is a dud.

Once again

Once again, the Perfex ESCs will not work with the radios I currently have. Yes, I have re-arranged the wiring. Yes, it "should" work. It clearly doesn't. The ESCs will not recognize the receivers to even power the steering servo or light up the LEDs in the receivers. The radios work fine with my LRP, Tekin, and Tamiya ESCs. Thus, I have come to the conclusion that the Perfex is brand specific in its ability to function.

My objective is to identify a Perfex radio suitable for 1/10, rather than the Mini-Z line.

And everybody is basically saying that we never heard of an ESC that only worked with a specific brand of receiver because this is standardized. We do, however, know that ESC setup can be tricky and think it is either that or your ESC is a dud. Buying a Kyosho brand transmitter/receiver will probably not help you at all, because they work just like other receivers.

I have a couple of Perfex radios, one came with a Mini-Z and one is the hop-up radio for Mini-Z. I have no experience with a Perfex radio for 1:10, but if they are anything like Tamiya, try to find one that was pulled from a ready to run Kyosho 1:10.

Just for information, I have a Kyosho Synchro KT-200 radio that came with my Sandmaster EZ along with a Kyosho ESC. The KT-200 is a rebranded Carson Reflex Wheel Pro 2.4 GHz. I think I managed to fry the receiver since I've made some custom rear lights but didn't thought about using resistors in series to protect against excessive LED current draw. Beforehand, the radio gear was fine, but now the throttle channel behaves like mad. D'oh.

EDIT: By the way, I can't recommend the KT-200/Reflex Wheel Pro. The Kyosho KT-201/Carson Reflex Wheel Pro LCD is a better transmitter thanks to more reliable digital trims, wider signal range and last but not least model memory. The KT-200's analog potentiometer trims have trouble keeping the steering neutral as well as misinterpreting a standstill as reverse or forward from time to time, even though I already tried recalibrating the ESC.
