  1. I believe it does, though the receiver in the car is an old R112JE 27MHz so my assumption was that a 27MHz crystal won't work in the 29MHz transmitter, and likewise that a 29MHz crystal wouldn't work in a 27MHz receiver?
  2. Hi guys, I know stuff-all about radio equip, so hoping someone can help me avoid spending money on the wrong gear I picked up a Top Force, fitted with a Futaba FP-R112JE AM27 receiver, no transmitter however, and I'm really keen to get it running. The only transmitter I have at present is what I've used for the 2 re-re's I've put together so far, Futaba Megatech 2PL 29Mhz. Am I right in the following? - I'll need a new set of AM27Mhz crystals something like this - Won't be compatible with a 29Mhz transmitter though, so I'd need to get a 27Mhz AM transmitter Anything I've missed? Cheers, A
  3. RC in general, I think my first ever car was a Nkko, some white/green/red car. I was pretty keen on the for a while too, but maybe that was just when I had figured I was priced out of the Tamiya market...As for Tamiya, it all goes back to the late 80's, probably 88 at the earliest, and visiting my older cousins in New Zealand - they had a couple of Hornets,Grasshopper, and no doubt some other cars I don't recall. I think there was a blue Kyosho there somewhere too. But the Hornet stood out most of all - I think they had a couple of them. I didn't have any siblings so I pretty much looked up to my older cousins more than any other kids, and anything they were into I wanted - though their family had quite a bit more $ than ours which didn't help! Have a handful of very vivid memories of watching them play around with the cars in NZ, I might've been about 4yo at the earliest. Recall one Hornet being taken out for a run after a heavy rain, only to vanish into a puddle on the sidewalk ( turned out to be more than just a puddle). Dates are hazy, but after getting a hold of some magazines, and a Tamiya guide book, I pleaded with my parents for a long while, and eventually scored a Madcap one Christmas - even better as one of my older cousins was staying with us in Perth for that xmas. As far as the scene in Perth at the time - I didn't know any other kids in school that owned a Tamiya. I would've been inside a solid % of homes in my suburb as a kid, and not a poor suburb at all, but I was the only one that had a Tamiya. I still got a ton of play out of mine, but not the same as it would've been if friends had similar cars to race with. I remember my dad taking me out to a local dirt track (which I saw a few months back is still in use), and an on-road track that was run outside of a shop, mostly nitro cars though. I think there were mostly older kids at both so I didn't really venture back.
  4. Only ever owned the Madcap as a kid - long since gone. Picked up my first re-re in late 2012, and have slowly acquired a few more since; Hornet re-re - picked up & built late 2012 Stadium Blitzer re-re - picked up and built late 2012 Grasshopper re-re - picked up mid 2013, haven't even considered building it yet though Top Forice original - just acquired in the last week (already built)
  5. Of no use now but for any future reads, picked up a black spray bottle of 'Graffiti Enz' from a local auto shop (not sure if its an Aus product or not) to fix up the results of a poor taping job on a Stadium Blitzer re-re - worked perfectly. It even smells nice too - probably not a good thing. Naturally I discovered the right solution after having already ruined some of the body with my first attempted fix (acetone)..
  6. Cheers for steering trim tip also - I'll definitely soften the suspension - definitely seemed as though it bounced around too much when I gave it a run
  7. Thanks guys, appreciate all the feedback & ideas Might even try get my hands on another hornet shell & transfer sheet and have a crack at a custom paint job... I think if I do get around to kit #2 it'll be the stadium blitzer, fairly inexpensive and always keen on one as a kid. Wild One a little bit pricey I think.
  8. googled steering trim, checked Futaba manual, all sorted. Easy as!
  9. Just read through this whole thread, what a huge pain for you Mat. I wouldn't let up on it - I'd pursue this guy with whatever options you have at your disposal legally, within reason/cost. The more he gets away with it, the more likely he is to do the same to other people in future. Owe it to yourself and others to clip his wings.
  10. Hi folks, Short time lurker, but a Tamiya fan from way back. I loved Tamiya as a kid - my older cousins had the Hornet, Grasshopper, and I'm sure another I can't recall (think one was Kyosho tho), and normally anything they had was the coolest thing in my eyes, but I didn't need any convincing that this was one of the greatest toys a kid could have. A couple of years of pleading finally got me a Madcap when I was ~9. Great car, which met its demise a few years later under the rear wheel of a 4WD. Asides from the occasional nostalgic look back, I hadn't given them much thought at all since then. A few months ago though, one of those nostalgia hits stuck. I then went on a search for all things Tamiya online, discovered the re-re's, and seeing as the Hornet was always the most iconic for me, I decided to grab one. I never built the Madcap - my dad handed it to me RTR, so this was all new to me. I'll go bulletpoint now Picks of the almost finished product first; The build & other bits - Grabbed a Hornet kit online for $129 Aussie ($134US), about the best price I could find domestically. Tamiya sure know how to pack/present a box. - LOVED the build. great fun. I definitely took longer than you're supposed to, but good learning experience. Fun thinking back to my dad doing much the same 20yrs ago, but probably wasn't having fun with it, knowing what it cost him! - I went stock for everything. Wouldn't know where to start to go beyond that, so went by the book for build, paint, transfers, everything. - I really don't know if I got the shocks right, went the harder option for both. Biggest pain was getting the rear tyres onto their rims. Spent an hour struggling, gave up in frustration. Next day, both on within 10mins. Sigh. - I'll never earn a dollar for applying transfers. Wish I saw the thread here around water/dishwasher liquid technique before I tackled that. I think I did a good enough job, but ******ed up a couple of them - Car goes great - for some reason I thought the speed of it would be less impressive now I'm an adult...but as a kid everything is going a million miles an hour, so I think it seemed even faster to me now than the Madcap did as a kid What's left? - It pulls to the left a bit, so I need to sort that out - Only bit I didn't do by the book was paint the headlights...$4 for the paint, just for those 2 parts that are already white. Meh. Upgrades - Any recommendations on best upgrades to tackle first, imagine ball bearings, sport tuned motor? Next build? - Plan to give it a good number more runs around the backyard, but not much beyond that. I'm not really in it to run it. If a mate had one too I might be, but this was largely about the build for me. - So.. I'd love to do another build, but debating whether worth it seeing as I'm not really going to be running them much. I always loved the Fox & Wild One (remember the ads for them in one of the few RC mags I had growing up), so if I do another, it'll be the Wild One, or Stadium Blitzer which was another fav.. Observations of someone walking into hobby shops for the first time in close to 20yrs - Where is Tamiya?? - I had this great hope of walking in and being met with a wall of Tamiya rere's, but I visited a handful of the main hobby stores around my city, only 1 stocked a Tamiya kit; Stadium Thunder. Seems like they've not kept up with the times and that's a shame - The majority of the shops all looked to be dedicated to planes/helicopters, but maybe it's been that way for a while? - General feedback I got when asking about the re-re's was 'You can get this other car for cheaper that's much better'. Give me a higher priced Tamiya kit any day. I'll leave it there. Thanks for giving me lots of great threads to read through during the whole process. Hopefully I get into some upgrades/another kit and have some more to share in future. Cheers, A
