Mad Ax 9313 Posted October 20, 2014 It's around about this time of year that I start getting excited about the concept of a Winter Build-Off. It's usually an excuse to go buy a cheap-ish kit and build it over the Christmas holidays, adding our own personal touches, knowing that at the same time a handful of other people around the globe are building the exact same kit with their own personal touches. Seeing how many different ideas we all come up with after the event is what makes it more exciting than a plain kit build. Anyone else up for it? For those who haven't done a winter build-off before, it's not a competition and there's no prize, there are 'rules' but they're not strict and if, having bought the kit and got started, you decide you want to go your own way and ignore the rules then it really doesn't matter - it's your kit, it's your build. Some years we've picked a specific kit and everybody goes their own way with design, I think one year we picked a particular theme but the choice of kit was up to the builder. Anyone else fancy joining me and giving me an excuse to buy another toy?
skip665 169 Posted October 20, 2014 I quite fancy this - I have been thinking about the Lowride Pumpkin too as its body lends itself to creativity Fusion have it for £100 with the TC 10% discount... http://www.fusionhobbies.com/product/58594-tamiya-lowride-pumpkin-m06
IBIFTKH 1369 Posted October 20, 2014 Sounds like fun, though the Lowride isn't on my shopping list. What about the Sand Rover / Holiday Buggy? Get everyone off to an early start for next year's DT-02 Challenge
Mad Ax 9313 Posted October 20, 2014 Both the Pumpkin and the SR / HBs have good customisation options - I think we could allow Holiday Buggy and Sand Rover in a single build-off so y'all have a choice. Anyone else want to throw in agreements or suggestions? We could let this run for a week or so then do a poll?
Sandster 285 Posted October 20, 2014 If the same kit was to be used by everyone. Could we approach one of the forum sponsors for a group buy discount? How about a lunchbox (because it is already on my shopping list).
skip665 169 Posted October 20, 2014 If the idea is to keep the cost under £100 for the kit (is it?) - then there are a few options... GrasshopperHornet Mad Bull Lunchbox Pumpkin DT03 TT-02B buggy HB/SR I see on eBay a seller has the M06 classic VW Beetle on offer for £100 - was tempted with that... camy67 13 Posted October 20, 2014 Cheaper the better, gives younger members a chance.
Mad Ax 9313 Posted October 20, 2014 Grasshopper Hornet Mad Bull Lunchbox Pumpkin DT03 TT-02B buggy HB/SR These are all valid options - I guess all readily available too. I guess basic touring car options are going over the £100 limit? I'd be happy with most of the above tbh but depends on what everyone else fancies doing Cheaper the better, gives younger members a chance. Agreed - although there are very few kits available for what most of us would consider "pocket money" - especially once you factor in paints and any other bits you need for your chosen customisation, plus battery, radio etc. if you're making it as a runner. If we're going to do this then I'll start putting cash aside now, otherwise I can guarantee that by Christmas I'll be all cashed out and I'll let the build-off slip by for another year... Of course there's always the option of choosing a theme instead - that way people can go with whatever kit they can afford, people don't get put off because they don't want to choose the build-off kit or because they already have one. £100 is quite a lot of money to spend on something you didn't really want just so you can be part of the build-off.
XV Pilot 1936 Posted October 20, 2014 I am very much in favour of going the "theme" route with this. Not everyone can afford a new kit, even a cheap one, and even for those that can, the chances of agreeing on a kit that everyone wants are slim. With a theme rather than a set kit, anyone can take part, with whatever kit they like, or even a car made up of spare parts, a resto project, or whatever. As long as they build it within the specified time, to the specified theme, it could be accepted, making this open to anyone.
topforcein 1764 Posted October 20, 2014 i for one like the sound of this also but i aint going out to buy a kit as there aint one out there that i want atm. and it just so happens that i have been collecting a few bits over the summer to do a custom lunchbox shell so if that is permitted i will join in. Mad Ax 9313 Posted October 20, 2014 XV, that's the best-put argument for going theme-based I've heard so far Anybody fancy throwing in some theme suggestions? I decided I'd open the rounds, and so that people didn't think I was biasing the theme to what I want to do, I went to a random word generator. The random word was: Armor Clad

Sandster 285 Posted October 20, 2014 How about movie vehicles for a theme?
Percymon 2184 Posted October 20, 2014 DT-03 would be a good option - under £70 delivered from German sellers with oil shocks, ESC and motor - just add a servo. Hop-up parts aren't too expensive if you wanted to go that route. Kit also includes two sets of decal so you can go Frog variant or Neo Fighter or custom
zomboided 374 Posted October 20, 2014 I was feeling distinctly neutral about the whole idea right up until 'armour clad'...
mr crispy 2293 Posted October 20, 2014 I'm liking the theme idea a lot. In keeping with the Armour Clad idea already put forward by Mad Ax I'd like to suggest... Zombie Apocalypse That would give a lot of freedom regards type of vehicle and creative design be it via paint, mods or just freaky weirdness. Perhaps if "theme" is the most popular choice, we can get a few suggestions together and do a poll.
XV Pilot 1936 Posted October 20, 2014 With the daily news sounding like the opening sequence from a zombie movie, with reports of scientists rushing to combat a killer African virus using highly experimental vaccines based on chimpanzee protein, I think a Zombie Apocalypse theme is very apt at this time. Who knows - the ideas from the build-off might need to see fullsize applications before long...
mr crispy 2293 Posted October 20, 2014 Isn't there a Mad Max remake coming out soon? Could tie in nicely.
zomboided 374 Posted October 20, 2014 I had the remade Death Race films in my head, but it's the same post apocalyptic deal! Seems like we're all landing on kinda the same thing though. Any other ideas before we all go off and buy metal plate in bulk?
i_am_scarecrow 913 Posted October 20, 2014 Best idea ever!!! I'm in! Zombie apocalypse or mad max style would each be a fantastic idea
dualdigger 62 Posted October 20, 2014 I am interested. I think choosing just one kit is a hard sell to the masses but a "theme" seems perfect. I think I could even get on board for a iron clad/zombie build. Count me in.
JeepnMike 150 Posted October 21, 2014 Oh!!! Oh!!! I vote Speedy_w_Beans in on this one!
XV Pilot 1936 Posted October 21, 2014 Okay, alternative themes: Heromobiles - build a ride for your favourite superhero, or even invent a new superhero and build a ride for him/her. Working vehicles - build a vehicle that works for a living. Anything from JCBs to rescue vehicles to cop cars. On Screen - recreate a car from film or TV.

Both heromobiles and working vehicles are a cracker idea. Id personally go for working vehicles
