cva 1 issues and thoughts

Recommended Posts

so recently I wanted to add a set of yellow cva shocks to my bear hawk runner ,originally when I rebuilt/restored the car it was a blitzer but as I had several I really wanted this so I used the black cva shocks and while they worked great I love original hop ups.

so I set about getting the bits for a yellow set , located the cylinders quite cheap and had some pistons and shafts in stock so I put them together and mounted them to the car ,that's when the problems started, they would bind like crazy and were useless .

after about 3 takes I think I have them spot on, the issue was the o rings, first build I used red o rings from the cva 11 shocks and they sealed fine but were way to stiff for a 2wd so I tracked down some black one thanks to beefmuffin , I rebuilt them again while they were better they were still no where near as smooth as the black cva's they were replacing.

so I took it out for a shake down today with a 2s and it was mental , problem was the shocks still!! , had a brain wave and thought about using some proper silicon o ring , all I had was a few traxxas rebuild kits and the difference was night and day , they work!!

what I think the issue is with the cva 1 shocks the inside of the cylinder where the oring sits is a lot tighter compared to the cva 11 shocks hence the binding. now they work the way they are supposed to but what is still irritating me is when I built the shocks for both my boomer and thundershot build I had no such issues but I have found they are ok being a bit slow for a 4wd where as the 2wd need fast moving fronts especially for a car like the bearhawk which is prone to understeer.

also a quick side note when building the front mini shock , the pistons need for them are a bit smaller than the rears which is a bit of a pain as the fronts are much harder to find hence why I pieced them together , the ones im currently using on the bearhawk are being borrowed from the super g im rebuilding which means I still need some pistons , I have a few ideas that im working for this so I will keep y'all posted on that.

I probably have some spare mini pistons hanging around if I dig a couple up with throw into the Madcap box.

When I rebuilt my original Monster Beetle, I also had the shock binding issue. I also used Traxxas shock seals, they worked well. I also had to "turn down" the OD of the shock pistons, they rubbed the inside of the shock body cylinders. After Traxxas seals, "turned down" pistons, and polished shafts, the original shocks on my original Monster Beetle work perfect B)

How do you know om not missing several already lol.

The traxxas seals really do work a treat ,i even used maxx shafts for the rear shocks as i found with the stock shafts i lost a bitnof clearance in the rear with the yellow lower mounts ,i guess i could of used the black ones but that would trip my ocd i think

i have some of that for my nitros but it still had no luck with it , i think it may be just an issue with the cylinders.

does tamiya do a silicon o ring , i saw a trf one but there seem to be quite a few different one about.

i also tried to polish the shafts and that made zero difference with the black o rings and was worse with the red ones.

Well, assuming this is an accurate representation of what Paul looks like, then yeah they have human-like fingers. You've seen Paul in person, so YOU tell US if this is accurate or not...

Use the TRF O rings , they are smooth on the TRF cars & i'm sure i had seen some one post that , They had used

TRF O rings on some shocks & that helped , In steed of the old black/red ones .

May have been on a build thread & they used them on Hi Caps ? not to sure .

Give it a go ???? ..

Well we could have done a run , as we have not had much of a summer of 30-40 + deg's and days of it .

I'm sure we will at some point , i'm keen . Just got a few things i'm doing at the moment . Getting ready to move

& looking to go to NZ for 10 days in March i hope .

So lets play it by ear & see how the weather is going & fit it in . Maybe end of this month ? if it's cool enough etc .

Or it may have to be April some time ?.

hey mat you jinxed us , 38 and 40 this weekend lol.

I don't sleep a geat deal now , my nearly 5 year old makes sure of that lol.

we could still look at the end of this month if y'all still keen.

back on topic , I have just received a falcon , thanks again ben, and im noticing a similar issue with the shocks so im going to try trf o rings on these bad boys and see how that works, the shocks are virtually new so I don't think its a wear issue.
