Blackfoot III, Mud Blaster 2, Bush Devil 2... still successful in sale?

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in success of the old WIld Dagger trucks like BF3, MB2 and BD2, which comes out 2 years ago. The old Blackfoot models saled very good and was very popular but today I see no youtube videos of the new models I also see no photos in google and read no storys about customer trucks.
Ok, sometimes very rarely I can see such a truck in a forum, but very rarely.

Are the new trucks successful in world? Good sales figures?

I think the WT-01 has seen some sales success. Otherwise there wouldn't have been 4 models on that chassis base (Blackfoot Xtreme, Mud Blaster II, Blackfoot III, Bush Devil II), as well as its dual motor counterpart WR-01. There are also some Youtube videos, though nothing really outstanding. Compare this to the lots of great videos dedicated to the old F-150 Blackfoot. E.g. Tamiya101.com/RC101tube.com:

BF3 seem popular in the UK. I'm looking to buy my 2nd one and Fusion had not only sold out by mid January, but their February delivery had already been allocated. If a stick with them I've got to wait for their March stock to arrive. Id stay that was pretty popular :)

popular - and with good reason . Tough , reliable and easily modified . Great , great chassis IMO .

I've just bought a mudblaster 2 and I'm doing just some finishing touches before its first run. I know quite a few on here have them and one member has about 5! Like everyone has mentioned they are tough, reliable, flexible (4x4x4 is an easy mod) and on top of this cheap. I paid €99, just under £80 at the time with an esc and hop up parts included.

I think the BF3 will always be the bigger seller/more desirable but at the same time more expensive because of the body shell included with the MB2 and BD2 having the lexan shells. The BF3 has one of my favourite tamiya shells. The reason I didn't get it is because I have a vintage blackfoot and my mudblaster 2 shell wasn't going to be used as I bought a lexan beetle shell and built a monster beetle.

The only negative I have heard is an aesthetic one. Some don't like the wheelbase as the bodies look slightly out of proportion compared to the wheelbase on the original BF,MB and BD. I think it will be a better performer than the vintage models but the trade off is a bit of cheeky funness.

On my original build a tried changing the width and went 4 wheel steering with a custom paint job.

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=69003&view=&hl=&fromsearch=1

This time I'm keeping it a lot more simple but I might use my Maverick Scout wheels as they have a deeper offset so will narrow the width without any other mods needed. The slightly too long wheelbase doesn't overly bother me but it wouldn't be that hard to make up a pair of chassis plates that reposition the battery.

Those BF3 decals are hideous though. I'll be getting a set of original BF decals on mine over a simple black paint job.

One of the reasons I want another one is my brother has a BF Extreme so it'd be good to have a matching chassis when we're on the trails. It also only occurred to me recently that the 2nd rear servo position (the old MSC one) that I've used to go 4WS in the past could also be put to good use as a servo winch, just by fitting a continuos rotation servo!

Edit: I never had a problem with my servo mounts but I've read people do replace the posts with alloy ones to eliminate any flex. How have yours broken The Kinght? You can get replacement posts but if the chassis mounts have broken you can simply use the servo mount at the other end and swap the gearbox around.

Look on picture, the red marked points are the mounting points of the servo and the borken out, so I must use many big washer outside the chassis, terrible.

To eliminate flex I use 100% alloy chassis, thats my BF3 now:

That's some heavy engineering Knight looks great :D

I'm thinking the all alloy parts may have removed the flex but that means any impact forces are transferred to the next weakest point... which sounds like it was where your servos attach to the chassis. Those huge tyres are also putting a lot of leverage on the servo.

I'd keep the plastic arms on mine deliberately to absorb and flex on impacts for this very reason. I'll think of mine as a crazy sized monster truck so it doesn't need bolt rigid circuit racer performance.

I last had mine configured as a Monster Jeep

But that WT01 got used in my Aliens APC build, hence the need for a new BF3 :)

Where did you get the alloy chassis and suspension arms The knight? I've got alloy shock towers but didn't know the rest existed. Looks great!

Parts at asiatees.com

The alloy chassis was made by german guy (in germany) ~ costs 70 euro + shipping.

I have converted into alloy, because the motors have only 23t and that's not fast enough to make damages. I havn't get damage while I'm driving. ;)

I sometimes think about buying a new 2WD Wt01 again but using it for FAST driving (brushless + lipo) but I don't know if this is good. The truck is not the stablest and and sterring is direct, so every stone tosses the truck ot of route/direction. This is the problem which I have on my Blackfoot 3.

I really like the WR/WT trucks, as does my family. My nephew and brother-in-law both have WR01s, and I have a WR01 and a WT01.

My WR01 is set up in 4X4X4 configuration, with twin ESCs and silver cans. The 4WS and MOA mixes on my Spektrum DX4S work brilliantly with it, giving 4WD, RWD, FWD, front steering, rear steering, crab steering and conventional 4WS on demand. It is great for climbing over things, and for indoor use as it is so manoeuvrable.

My WT01 is a far simpler beast - a fast basher with a low turn motor and just the basic mods (bearings, steel pinion, GPM towers, 95mm shocks). Waterproof electronics make it usable in all weathers, and the big wheels and high ground clearance make it my basher of choice when the terrain is too rough for a buggy.

Neither of the two are precision race machines - they have a bit of flex and slop, and before I fitted them with GPM showers and oil shocks, they bounced around a bit. However they are very tough and capable, and I am more than willing to forgive their minor shortcomings in order to enjoy their many strong points.

Where did you get your steel pinion from XV? I've done similar to you. I've got rubber sealed bearings, gpm shock towers and 100mm shocks. I want to get a quicker motor than the standard silver can but want to upgrade the pinion first.

I get my steel RW Racing pinions from Modelsport. They stock all the usual sizes and pitches.

Thanks :) . Just ordered some stuff from them. I'll have a look now.

Oh just before I look is it 18t 48pitch for the wt01?

Like most non-TRF Tamiyas, the WR/WT trucks use mod .6 pinions.

@XVpilot: please post a picture of your trucks! :)

I'm using steel pinions from robinson racings parts.

Edit: ah I forgotten to ask. Is there alternative 2.2 rims? They must have a full negtive offset I think but which one??? :(

This is Daisy, my WT01:

I will have to take an up-to-date photo of Big Green, my WR01, as I don't have any showing the new chrome wheels and silver shocks that I fitted recently.

Nice.

Last two days I worked on a new body shell for another WT-01 project in future (this chassis is only a dummy).

It's a Nikko toy monster truck in 1:10, same dimensions as a Blackfoot. Also ABS plastic.

It's too cold outside for painting, so I must wait some months to finish the project ;)

This is my wt-01 mudblaster 2. I always loved the monster beetle but tamiya never did a re-re so I made one myself. I've heard lots of people rave about what a fun basher these wt-01 chassis cars are. I think they also have fewer issues than the vintage blackfoot and mudblaster as they had gearbox issues and suffered from bump steer. I do love the vintage versions too and have a vintage blackfoot.

Here's my wt-01 monster beetle

mmmh I think in 2016 the Blackfoot modells are 30 years old, could be possible, that Tamiya would re-release it.

It would be nice, if they re-release the King Blackfoot, because this is the stablest chassis of the old BF family.

I love the WT01 as a fast basher.

Here's my thread which covers most things and a video at the end of it running with a 9T equiv brushless;

http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/topic/160586-tamiya-wt01-wr01-monster-truck-build/

I run a jumbo servo on mine, but my kids trucks are running waterproof savox metal geared servos which are a must on these imho if you want trouble free running.

My top recommended mods to this chassis (apart from ball racing) are;

1. Upgraded metal geared servo (gpm servo mounts are worthwhile to remove flex while doing this but necessary)

2. GPM shock towers and 93mm shocks for massively extended suspension travel

3. Waterproofed receiver/ESC (chassis flicks up quite a lot of water so makes this a more complete basher)

I should be receiving a Blackfoot III today from Fusion ordered back in December :) I thought the Chassis had gone out of production as no one seemed to have stock for a while, glad they haven't!

Here's our fleet of WT/WR01's.

I'm suprised they're not that popular in Japan, do they do a lot of 'bashing' in Japan?

Cheers

Another wt-01 nito. Now that's just greedy! And why not. Love the BF3 shell. I don't know if you read my reply on my thread about the 100mm dampers. The car was really stable and wouldn't roll. This is with a standard 540 though so with more power it could end up rolling the car cornering hard but so far it's been fine.

Yeah! I also use shock towers and want Gmade 93mm Shocks. Is the suspension very soft or bit hard?

I think about 2WD brushless. Is there a rule what I must consider before I buy abrushless kit? Especially for WT01, I mean.
