Will see how this pans out, Lately I've found an itch that seems like its gonna need scratching, and that is I'm thinking I need some kind of old school BMX. Ideally what I'd really love is a 1980's Mongoose Supergoose in chrome with red "highlights", just like I had back then, something like this below:

imagejpg1_zps4a747282.jpg

Now that may be pipe dream stuff for me at the moment, but what I've found interesting is that some companies like Haro and Skyway seem to also be on the re-re band wagon, and something else that has caught my eye is the Skyway T/A 24 cruiser that has been re popped:

imagejpg1_zps4e0065d0.jpg

Anyway, I know Erich has been working on a beautiful old 'Goose, but is anyone else out there in TC land into old school BMX also? If so, feel free to post them up

I've still got my 1990 S&M DIRTBIKE from when I was a kid which is on the resto list. I'm also right in the middle of building a cracking 79 Supergoose.

Being a local be sure to check out the OZBMX website bro. There's plenty of info there to scratch that itch of yours. As with all forums it takes all sorts to make a community, there are some great guys there willing to share and help out. There is heaps in the for sale section there too but be warned it is VERY fast paced. I recommend you read the rules for this section before you look as the guidelines are quite strict, but once understood it makes for the best selling place I've ever been involved in on the web. Everything is so clear and transparent, making for easy buying and selling. The place is crawling with Quiksilvers, P.K. Rippers, Mongooses, Pattersons, Quadangles and it goes on and on, all the old school legends are there.

Also check out the BMXmuseum site. Enjoy.

BMX was second to only RC in my heart and in my life. In fact, I used to ride my bike 20 miles to hobby shop to pick up parts! I was fortunate enough to have a few bikes, my favorites being my first custom built freestyle bike made from a Mongoose frame and then, my baby, my GT Pro Freestyle Tour Team Model. I rode freestyle, although we did a lot of jumping as well. I also had the fortune of attending Woodward freestyle camp two summers in a row and getting to meet and learn from some of the best freestyle riders in the world at that point. Seeing the GT, Dyno, and Hutch teams at the peak of their glory was an amazing thing. I also met the first girl I ever had a crush on, Krys Dauchy. I have been looking for a GT for ages, but I've always come up a day late or a dollar (more like thousands lol) short. A couple shots for nostalgia, and the GT is not mine, just matches what I had.

Let me ask you BMX fans..do you guys ride it and or do tricks on it, similar to skateboard except on a bmx? In the 70's, i skateboard without any knee, elbow, wrist pads (these protection became available with inline skate)and my skin paid the price everytime i take a spill like a small rock gets logged under the wheel and i ended up mopping the pavement with my skin.

With bikes is another level of skills and pain, especially those over the handlebar landings.

I used to do tricks. I'm too old now lol. I can still do a few though I sold my Haro a few years ago. I'm my day, we only wore helmets and that was when we rode half pipes. I'm pretty sure I suffered a few concussions when I was younger lol.

I jumped on my nephews BMX and was wheelieing, endoing & bunny hopping like a maniac a few weeks ago :D

Does anyone make BMX's in adult scales these days? Be great to have those classic proportions and control in something that fits my middle aged frame so my knees aren't up around my ears :)

I used to do bmxing here in NZ when i was younger. Started off with a Panther (lol) and then when the nationals were in my town i had enough money to choose between a second hand Mongoose and a Crisp that were being sold. I took home the 1983 Expert that was in white. Unfortunately i thought it was at my Mums but i had actually left it at an ex girlfriends when the relationship turned sour.

I saw her a couple of years ago at a club and told her i would buy it back but she said she biffed it out and laughed.... cow. :(

The Skyway I posted above is known as a Cruiser, with 24 Inch wheels instead of the classic 20 Inch, There are also Cruisers available in 26 Inch, haro have recently released a retro in 24 and 26 Inch

I currently have a Bianchi BMX 20 Classic, it was the to of the Bianchi range.

The bicycle is stored in my parent's cellar and is all disassembled and carefully stored in a box with all the metal and chrome parts covered with grease to avoid rust and oxidation.

The bicycle was restored before the storage.

The frame was orange with dark blue Bianchi writings and badges, the fork was chrome and all remaining parts were made in ergal blue anodized except the handlebar that was gold plated. The tired were blue and I suppose they are gone now with the time.

I try to search for some pictures of my bicycle on the net but sadly I didn't find them :(

Foung the Binchi BMX 20 in google imagine. not sure if any of the imagines match your Classic.

BTW what does BMX stands for....bicycle motor cross? I see them in the X games where riders race around a motor cross circuit by peddling like mad and clearing earth mounts all by leg power instead of horse power.

You are correct it is indeed "Bicycle Motocross"

This was a beautiful bicycle sport to do.

Unfortunately there are no Bianchi 20 Classic images on the net and this is strange. It was the top of the line and was sold in white, yellow, red, orange, black and mild blue color. A friend of mine had the Bianchi 20 Trophy from the same era and was the second in line but still a very good and well mounted BMX, with a different chassis geometry (curiosly it was more modern that the classis) and it was only black with gold aluminum parts. Beautiful!

You can find some images of the Trophy on the net probably.

Another wet dream when I was child was the Atala Type 4! Lot of images on the net of it. It was produced in Torino, my city, and was sold in all country because Atala is an historic italian brand. The Atala Type 4 was a top of the Atala line and was at the same level than mine. Maybe under certain aspects was better than mine, under other ones my Classic was better than the Type 4.

For example the Type for was the first to have a 3 pieces crackset and it was all aluminum made so it was very light. My Classic had the traditional single piece steel crankset but had better aluminum Ofmega pedals. Both of them had the aluminum chainring (42T the Type 4 and 44T the 20 Classic both with 18T pinion gear at the wheel), both cranks and chainrings were made in Italy by Ofmega.

Here some picture of the 20 Trophy:

http://www.kijiji.it/annunci/biciclette/trieste-annunci-trieste/bi-mx-bmx-bianchi-20-super-trophy-vintage-anni-80-originale/69611947

To be exact this is a 20 Super Trophy.

The Trophy has a little sister, the 20 Trophy Junior, same fork and same frame, white and yellow available colors but no aluminum parts and components.

Some year after Bianchi released the 20 Super Trophy that was identical to the original 20 Trophy except the materials. The Super Trophy frame, fork and crankset were identical in shape but made of Chrome Molibdenum steel, TIG welded and with a mirror chrome finish. All the components were the same of the 20 Trophy, made in aluminum but black anodized instead than gold anodized. Thanks to the best steel of the frame, fork and crankset the bike was lighter than its older brother.

Here we have the Atala Type 4 in very good condition!

http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/atala/17884

What a dream when I was young. Fortunately I had the 20 Classic...

I’ve often waxed poetically about the BMX bikes I’ve had over the years but really I have no interest to collect them as I would look like a 6’1” dork trying to ride his son’s bike. In the 80’s I was a BMX kid. Rode my bicycle everywhere I went. I did a fair bit of racing and had some success. Here are some photos of me from back in my BMX days.

In the 90’s I raced mountain bikes.

MTB1_zps4e42e311.jpg

I did really well but when racing at that level, the crashes brutal. After a couple of airlifts and a gnarly crash at Squaw Valley USA, I hung up my racing shoes. Now most of my time is spent on pleasure riding.

Or commuting to work on my recumbent bicycle where I’ve been averaging about 80 miles per week.

I used to race BMX in the early 80's. As a matter of fact I owe my TC nickname to that beloved memory of mine. When Freestylers got attention after 1985 they started calling the thing I used to do "Dirt race", but to me Freestyle was Freestyle, and not BMX.... Anyway, I now have a Japanese 1984 Kuwahara Survivor 2.5, and a 1984 Mongoose Expert.

Some pictures...

may71983_zpsc71f7ef0.jpg

"Mongoose1983" & Mongoose Expert before finishing the restoration. This bike was my golden dream when I was a kid!

The unfinished bike...

Some NOS vintage sweetness to go with it...

The "Kuwie"...

The brake system is not the original. It was stolen when it was stored in the south, if you can actually believe that. I have got the original Elina seat, but since I run the bike in the city I don't use it, same thing with the tires. All of the other stuff you see there is from good old 1984... :)

Wow love this thread. Mtbkym01 your skyway looks amazing! My old school bmx was a raleigh burner. It wasn't as premium a brand as a skyway for example but I still loved it as a kid. Some of the other kids had skyways, diamond backs, mongoose and muddy fox which I think were all better but I've got fond memories of my burner.

Does any anyone remember a film called bmx bandits with a young nicole kidman? Not the best film but loved it when I was little. Lol
