Original Sand Scorcher box art restoration

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm new here and I own an original Sand Scorcher.

A few months ago, I've restored it to box art specs. I've also made two more re-re Sand Scorcher bodies.

How it was when I bought it on ebay

P1130873.jpg

As the body has "Bilstein" decals, I've made Bilstein shocks. :P

P1130889.jpg

Drive trains are painted black

P1140172.jpg

A scale motor kit from Knight Custom is added on the rear

P1140179.jpg

I've also welded "scale" bumpers...

P1140199.jpg

P1140203.jpg

Inner arches are made on the body

Alloy wheels

P1140378.jpg

Finished, with leds.

More pictures to follow... ;)

Second body (re-re)

I wanted a 70's look.

Like the original body, I've made inner arches.

Here with the second set of wheels and tyres. This body also has leds but they're off on the picture.

Now it's the third body. I've just finished it. During my childhood, I really liked the Disney films with Herbie. That's the look I've chosen for this last body. I've added a few details found on the real Herbie.

Inner arches (again :P )

Paint code is the original Volkswagen Pearl white, used on Herbie.

Here is my third wheels and tyres set. The wheel centres are from Knight Custom. Stripes are painted, they're not decals.

I've added the external fuel cap on the passenger's side, as fitted on Herbie in "Herbie goes to Monte Carlo". ;)

And now, a picture of the family :P

Thank you very much. ;)

This Sand Scorcher is my first RC car. I saw one when I was a child and always thought it was cool. I'm now 34 and I finally got one!

Here's a video of Herbie. The stripes in the video were made with decals but they didn't like the water on the beach... Since the video, I've made them with paint.

Those are all brilliant. You have some good skills there.

Can you tell me what tires you used on Herbie?

Thanks. ;)

I wanted an old school look for the tires. They are 1/14 semi truck tires, found here: http://store.rc4wd.com/Country-Road-17-Wide-114-Semi-Truck-Tires_p_3255.html

I have modified the rear wheels to fit them on. (Wheels were to wide).

I have been mulling over trying out 1/14 tires but not taken the plunge. Great work. Opens up a new load of possibilities!

Those all look really smart, I can't even decide which one I like the most!!

Where did you get the Wide 5 wheels for the Herbie replica? Never seen them before, very smart

Hi,

Thank you very much for your kind comments. ;)

The letters on the tyres are home made. I've used the picture below. With photoshop, I've removed everything except the letters. I've printed them on waterslide decal paper and then put some clear paint on it.

And the result

Regarding the wheels, it's just 3D printed covers fitted on the original Rough Rider wheels (1,7"). These covers are made by Knight Customs and can be bought here: http://www.shapeways.com/model/1104982/srb-5-lug-wheel-insert-1-insert-only.html?li=shop-results&materialId=62

Those look great! I bet Toykid will be stoked to see his wheels on that Herbie.

Excellent job - I love the wheels and detailing on the Herbie version particularly - superb!

Out of interest, there was a 2WD buggy racing the Dakar this year (with a VW TDi engine) that was bodied as Herbie:

They even managed to get [3] 53 as their race number - cute eh?

It was going really well until about day 9 unfortunately:

They even reconfigured the suspension to drive it on 3 wheels to get them to the end of the stage - true Herbie style! - but unfortunately they couldn't get it repaired in time, and were excluded...

Still the heroes of the race for many though ;o)

Hi ;)

I've just modified the original suspension. I've also fitted a ball differential to my Sand Scorcher. :)

Hi,

I've just add a new set of wheels to my collection :D

I wanted wheels that can also be found on real VW bugs. I've found Fuchs wheels from the Porsche RSR made by HPI.

I've used a set of wheel adapters for the rear and modified the front wheels.

I've cut the wheel and mixed it with an original Rough Rider wheel.

Hope you like it. :)

I've created a Facebook page named "Steed Customs" about my Sand Scorcher. :D

Have a look, like and share! :)

Work in progress...

I'm actually working on two bodies: one is an original, the other is a re-re.

I've just finished the inner arches on each body. :)

I love these!

Toykid, if you're reading - how about a new set of outer covers in this style for the 1.7 Rough Rider wheels too?!

Top custom work Mere Grand - these modifications are wonderful!
