Transmitter/receiver/speed control question from newbie

Recommended Posts

Good evening all

I'm really new to the world of R/C so if my terminology is off please forgive me.

I have bought a S/H fighter buggy, it's running the original speed controller and standard motor, I've already replaced the motor with a Tamiya Sport tuned motor and metal 17t pinion.

I have a transmitter & receiver I use in my bait boat for fishing, however it seems to have died.

I have not got the budget for a new set up, what should I look out fir in a S/H transmitter/receiver combo?

Also is it advisable to update the speed controller as when I wired up the battery, it smoked like a demon.

Any pointers in the right direction received with much kudos!

Many thanks all.

Before doing anything with the radio, I'd check the speed controller. You should get the contacts all shiny and clean, and also check the pressure on the rotor. If the MSC (mechanical speed control) is too loose or too tight you might get some smoke. Or that can also happen if the resistor (white chip) is disconnected, so you must check the cables, too. The sport tuned motor should be alright with a standard MSC.

their not a bad set for the money Joe and should be ideal for the RX - what ESC are you going to use or are your sticking with the old MSC ?

Cheap and cheerful but it will get the job done . No way its going to thermal on a RX with its 320A rating that's for sure :D

My only problem I can see is getting everything to fit securely and cables not getting caught up.

servo tape to stick the ESC down - same with the RX . Then tidy it all up with tie wraps . Take your time and route the wires well and it will be fine .

Transmitter & receiver all arrived. As a newbie I must say this set is fool proof, really is just plug and play.

My only problem/issue I had was I've had to wire the motor back to front as when you pulled the trigger in to go forwards the buggy went backwards, also the steering wouldn't work when going forwards, however since retiring the motor she runs perfectly.

Just need to improve my steering skills.

My God is it fast!

glad you have it sorted Joe . Having to swop the wiring over is not unusual as not all ESC's are wired the same . As long as it works - it works :D . It will be quick on a sport tuned as its a light buggy .

If your ESC started smoking, it more than likely was bad (or is bad now) ESC's, especially for brushed motors are pretty cheap. You can usually find the Tamiya ESC's (TEU-105BK) which are pretty good quality for $30 or under on ebay. I've also have a Duratrax Sprint ESC, which seems to be unkillable...
