Won a txt 1 last night on fleabay last night. Little more than I wanted to pay but still happy.

It looks in fairly good nick but will be stripping it down and re-building.

Can anyone tell me my shock options. I have seen the mega expensive tamiya ones but are there any other options?

You other options are to use dampers from an e/t maxx or some of the ebayer "rc damper" generic alloy dampers or maybe some off another model.

The ones that come with the txt-1 are pretty good :)

This truck has so much potential it's crazy. My advise is too look over every possible upgrade and choose how is applicable to your plans of offroading/driving. Maybe some TRF big bores? TRF Big Bore soak up alot on my 501X and 201 buggies on huge jumps....They are silk smooth but are pricey!

Berman has great ideas as always!

Thanks guys, I will have a look at what's out there. I don't want a truck that is purely bling, just want upgrades that will make it run and handle better.

My plan is to use it as a bit of a basher/jumper with decent performance so will be fitting brushless set up.

I have seen an upgraded alloy gearbox case (non tamiya), is this recommended/required or does stock handle brushless ok?

Tamiya's low friction dampers 53492 are much smoother than standard txt-1 shocks BUT have flaws namely price, metal on metal construction ( lower shock caps will pop off eventually unless you keep tightening them up ) or use thread lock on them. Entire shock oil contents spilled over your axles is not cool!

Plus shock springs look the same as txt-1 springs but in reality are twice the thickness so VERY stiff.

Berman is right stick with the standard txt-1 shocks they are excellent even on my Ford Of The Dead txt-2 build ( in my showroom ) I kept the stock Tamiya shocks.

Txt-1 shocks are on a par with Traxxas big bore shocks in my opinion if you fancy a set of big bores Crawford Performance Engineering has them for sale on their site dirt cheap.

Only downside is you will have to drill through shock mounts to attach nut and bolt as bottom end of big bore shocks has hollow ball connectors.

Stick with stock shocks and spend money elsewhere that is my opinion anyway :)

A couple things I did to bulletproof my TXT-1 were:

Added braces between the top link mounts where they connect to the transmission. I got them from RC4WD, but I don't think they produce them anymore. It's just an aluminum plate with two holes in it, so it's not too tough to fabricate.

Replaced the rod ends. After I upgraded the motors, I started stripping rod ends like crazy, so I replaced them with traxxas 5347.

Replaced the driveshafts. Mine wore out pretty quickly with upgraded motors, so I replaced them with Traxxas Revo parts. I had to shave the center gearbox with a dremel sanding drum to clear the universal joint.

I left the original shocks also. I've never had a problem with them. Maybe just do a rebuild with some new o-rings when you get the truck.

Some fantastic advice in this thread!

The faster you go with this truck the worse the torque twist gets. As GraveTxt mentioned, the Txt-1 upgrade dampers might be a good option with the stiffer springs as it should help a little with the twist, or if you keep the factory shocks maybe up the oil weight a little. The other option is to convert to a more conventional shock setup and eliminate the cantilevers like on the txt-2.

Brushless, just from previous info off the net I would suggest keeping it 10.5 turns and under, once you start going above that is when people start having problems with the gearbox. A friend of mine has a txt-2 with a 9.5t and the box is slowly starting to get noisy. I believe it is common to change the factory box out for an emaxx one when going for more power.

As RCcoachworks mentioned, replace the stock prop shafts straight away. Customised Traxxas ones are popular, otherwise Junfac or RC4WD punisher shafts are good (I think the punishers are being discontinued). The stock ones will eat themselves alive.

I have a TXT-2 and I have just swapped out my Dual Sky 6.5t brushless for an LRP Vector 4.5t - had a quick run around outside last night and its still totally bonkers but I cant tell how much (if any) more bonkers! I did notice that the spur gear has a couple of chips off the teeth but as I don't abuse the truck (just stand nervously trying to tame all the power!) hopefully it will last a while longer :)

Talking of brushless motors and gearboxes, I went for a 4274 2000KV motor for my TXT-1, and built a new style gearbox for it :

I didn't have any success selling it on Ebay for what I wanted for it, but will be relisting it soon at a much reduced price. Congrats on getting a great monster truck, I had 3 of them at one point, and it is the model I've kept in my collection the longest now.
