FrankenLunchBox

Recommended Posts

Well this one fell on me by accident.

I purchased new front arms for the Hornet and I found a supplier that was offering them with a LunchBox chassis for a couple of quid more.

SAM_1529_zpsektcwakd.jpg

When I was browsing Banzai I found CW-01 parts in red for not a lot of cash and I was ordering anyway.

SAM_1537_zpsujjqoxec.jpg

So having most of the running gear I thought I should get a body, Tamico had them cheap and once again I was ordering anyway.

SAM_1530_zps7nohohhb.jpg

So I just needed the rest of the parts and I had a couple of new DT-01 kits needing a reason so I thought why not add one to another.

SAM_1531_zpsob30lrob.jpg

So my thinking is DT-01 axle and front arms on a Lunchbox chassis held together with red bits I think were destined for a Unimog

SAM_1532_zpssp2qjji8.jpg

SAM_1533_zpsd3lbdffo.jpg

Plan A went out the window a bit quick

SAM_1538_zpsqbmg3crt.jpg

The axle is a little to wide to fit in the mounts. There is quite a lot of meat in the mounts though so I think I can shave them down a bit

SAM_1539_zpsqirhsscd.jpg

I am going to use machine screws for bits of this build because I think they look cool

SAM_1541_zpsy3fver2o.jpg

SAM_1542_zps5wzlkj9i.jpg

SAM_1543_zpsloo1j3vz.jpg

First small issue at the front. The arms will position but not fit well

SAM_1544_zpsojpxksc2.jpg

compared here to stock arms. They are much more braced and do not have much downward movement on them, I think I will need to run them upside down and on the wrong side.

SAM_1546_zps0hdmfxtg.jpg

SAM_1547_zpswqexetan.jpg

That's it for tonight

This should be interesting! Looking forward to seeing how it develops.

I was thinking of doing something similar with a Hornet and DT-01 components, and this build should give me some ideas as to the areas to watch out for.

Good luck!

Bit more done

Mounts measured down a bit. I did not take huge amounts off, I want to see how much movement I need.

SAM_1637_zpsrvfdaos1.jpg

SAM_1639_zpsg8unl9cg.jpg

SAM_1640_zpsshdqkavi.jpg

Test fit body. Need body mounts to do this properly

SAM_1641_zpsxui2slvl.jpg

SAM_1644_zpsqqdbs0kg.jpg

Not sure which way up these arms need to be, need to fit wheels and see

SAM_1646_zpsroweus0p.jpg

SAM_1647_zpsbqjcr9sp.jpg

Uprights arrived and fitted

SAM_1648_zpszo5f6msm.jpg

Wheels fitted from Madbull to try

SAM_1649_zpsbg7fx8e8.jpg

Need to work on shock length. Tried what I had lying about

SAM_1650_zps8zijunzj.jpg

Flipped arms. Work much better

SAM_1653_zpsu8lolr6r.jpg

Need short rear shocks

SAM_1654_zpsp8n5bewl.jpg

So am I wasting my time and I should just buy a normal LB?

^^^ I agree, if you have a lot of these parts floating around anyway you have nothing to lose.

I think (as you said yourself) when you have those rear shocks sorted it will give you a better indication of where you heading with this.

Nice work :)

Definitely not wasting your time. Unique builds are always cool and this is shaping up to be very nice. Is there any scope to lower the rear body mounts rather than having to find new shocks?

Or raise the front? I like the thinking, I was trying to keep the top half stock but why do that if it compromises the build :-)

Thanks, I will sort the rolling stock and the make the body fit

I rather like the rear stance, it looks rather cool and aggressive, in fact down right bonkers :D:D:D

Bonkers comes with my next project for this shell, 4x4x4. I need some 2d CAD skill first though but I have all the bits waiting after I finish this one and the DT-01 twin hammer.......................................

Fits like a glove now so tried to find a place for the center pivot

SAM_1784_zpseecricoo.jpg

Looks like the battery box will be a good place

SAM_1785_zpsemafhf7u.jpg

Trimmed a bit big :-(

SAM_1786_zpsbhbh0mzx.jpg

Looks good though

SAM_1787_zpsdbl0scqq.jpg

SAM_1788_zpsrqjonuus.jpg

SAM_1789_zpsegbtylwl.jpg

Back end sorted for now so move to the front.

Arm bracket needed "relieving" to let the arms get get full movement

SAM_1790_zpsoc9kbufe.jpg

Arms needed a light slice as well

SAM_1791_zpsivc3onrf.jpg

Arms get full droop now

SAM_1792_zpsf0wrsfhu.jpg

Next thing is to get some shock mounts, refuse to pay Tamiya price for a couple of bits of bent metal so will go bin diving in the scrap box at work and see

The DT-01 axel sits in the middle of the pivots so that might give me more of a flat profile. I need to sort shock mounts and shocks to play with this a bit. Waiting on body mounts from Banzai so this could be a slow burner for a while

Servo fitted with a couple of links I had spare in a bag, think they are DT-02 ones. Looks like there is plenty of clearance for the full suspension movement

Bit of an update during the week but only just got around to uploading the pictures

I was a bit hung up on how to mount the shocks to the body. LB mounts are about £6 a pair which was a bit rich for my blood but I was reading a thread that mentioned the Rising Fighter. I looked up the front mounts for that and they look up to the job and are less than £4 posted from ModelSport for all 4.

I have to add my own nuts and bolts but I have buckets of them

SAM_1826_zpsucz4niw2.jpg

Fitted

SAM_1828_zpsatdk2bvs.jpg

SAM_1829_zpssnfqht5c.jpg

Boomerang shocks from AsisTees. I thought they were poor out the box but a bit of oil in them and I am starting to come around. They do not have a bladder so ideally they need to be full submerged when filling them to get the air out. These are 100mm, I think I will got for 110mm on the final build

SAM_1830_zpsue2dzpjc.jpg

First issue. The top of the shock will not fit in the mount :-( hung it on the back side for mocking up

SAM_1832_zpsattwvz7s.jpg

SAM_1831_zpsxjbwislg.jpg

Front shocks off a DT-01 on the rear for mocking up. Length is about spot on but travel will not be huge, given the limitations of this chassis I do not think that will be a massive problem but I do have a plan B should it be needed.

SAM_1835_zps8qgjzkbz.jpg

Wheels test fitted, waiting on tyres and body mounts from Japan :-(

It's amazing how access to a nice concept mill eases the Frankenstein gene in all of us.. I'm making a list of hard to find vintage parts to take to the shop I use to run. Just to see the cost verses the demand.... Nice work again Noobi

I wish I had the skills to use it to its full potential, we have a lot of great tools but the time to learn them is lacking in life at the moment. The laser cutter is next on my must learn list

I've made some awesome stuff over the years rarely for myself.... Everything from surgical stuff to stainless steel adult toys... And not the Rc kind.... I'm really interested in taking some old WW parts in for repro... Keep up the great work

Flash of inspiration today. I took the DT-03 CVA's off the DT-02 and put the fronts on the rear and the rears on the front.

Works quite well I think. If I can some different length shafts I can play about some more
