What would you pay..?

Recommended Posts

I've been offered a NIB Tamiya Technigold motor for a fairly hefty price and I was wandering what peoples thoughts were on what would be reasonable for one of these NIB, as they are getting pretty scarse these days?

thanks

have seen some jokers asking $200 & up

Nice motor & all, but that's a crazy price for a display piece.

Do you want to run it?

I may have stumbled across dirt-cheap supply of brand new Technigolds but they do not have the sticker on them. I was in a local hobby store this weekend and saw them for sale. I bought one for £28 and took it home. On the outside, it is 100% identical to a vintage technigold... I will be pulling both of them apart tonight to see if they are indeed the same. will get some photos out.

Re prices, I track them quite a lot.

NIBs go for £100-£125. There is one on ebay right now that has been up for sale for several months... it started at £150 but is now £125. I actually offered £100 but he did not take it.

Nice used version are normally £50-£75 if they are in excellent condition, £30-£50 for good condition and as low as £20 for old and knackered.

A hund'squid is probably halfway reasonable, now that the pound is so low :)

Assuming you really want that motor!

If you were just gunna be running it, there'll be good used examples for less.

Personally I wouldn't use a TechniGold in a Hotshot; a TechniPower is probably more era correct.

TechniGold I'd usually associate with the Avante, Pigwig and Porker 959.

It was an official hopup though, printed on the side of the kit box, no?

RS540VZ is offered in the Mabuchi catalogue for industrial supply.

Do check yours for configuration of the timing markings & does it have serrated brushes? :)

Only pay what you think is reasonable, after all its still only a motor,

Plus on ebay there will always be another one !!

Don't know about the first Hotshot, but it is printed as official hopup on the Hotshot II box.

The Technigold was offered from 1986.

Aha! You're correct WillyChang, it is indeed a Technipower on the box art:

Although I'd be happy with a technigold as it looks almost identical.

Original Hotshot should have a motor wrapped in Tamiya Rubber Bag... could hide anything in there ;)

I did not get the time to strip it down last night but did get some photos of the exterior...

So far it is identical... will hopefully find the time to dig into it further. As an aside, the sticker on the motor claims that it has 20,000 RPM but the instructions claim 22,500.

How much did you say you paid for that, £28?

So the question is, am I willing to pay and extra £72 for a 'technigold' sticker?!?

Let me open it up first... it may just be a nice casing with crap inside! But if it is basically a rebadged Technigold, I am not sure the £72 for a sticker is worth it! On my 959 runner the sticker is hidden anyway when fitted so if this has the same power as a TG I think I may stock up on 4 of them for the price of 1 original. I imagine it is also possible to get spare brushes etc for this aswell.

Nice specs,

RX-15 Plus SMC-M-700
Same physical size as the 500 series but, if you want top performance in a small size, this is the motor! Low impedance, balanced armature running in ball races. For 7.2v - 8.4v, 1700 mAh nicads. High tech. replaceable brush gear with adjustable timing to suit application i.e. can be set for highest performance with subsequent reduced run time or slightly lower r.p.m. with long battery run or anywhere in between!

Specifications
Overall length 68mm (2.67’’) - Width 35.8mm (1.4’’) - Weight 146 (5.1oz) - 4.5-15v range nominal 6.0-12v constant - RPM 7500-15800 - 7.49-21.2w output

Now some bad thoughts, not so sure if some of the 'new' Technigolds could be relabeled RX-15s (with modern day printing techniques), quality should be the same but as mentioned before 72 for a sticker

Not to hi jack this but a question I have always wondered is what I the difference between a techni power and technigold? I got a TG a while back and to be honest in comparison to the new motors like a good 18 turn etc found it very slow...?

There was a chart done a while ago but I cannot find it... all I could find when I searched was this...

Here's a little conversion chart I did, and posted on another thread:

Acto-Power: 3583KV

Dynatech 02H: 3472KV

Dynatech 01R: 3050KV

Technipower: 2819KV

GT-Tuned: 2638KV

Technigold: 2638KV

Sport Tuned: 2541KV

Technituned: 2388KV

Mabuchi 540: 2094KV

If anybody knows where the full chart is nowadays I would be very interested in seeing it.

The Technipower is probably even more difficult to find then the Technigold. I have one in my original Hornet which i fitted in the early days but you don't see them passing buy anymore. I searched ages for an affordable Technigold and ended up with 3 recently as part of recent restoration projects that i purchased. One is in the mail direction Percymon with the 1988 Avante project :)

Sometimes you can be lucky, sometimes you need alot of patience.

could be 6.0V vs 7.2V readings

In the past there have been other resellers of RX540VZ found sold by Hirobo & Graupner amongst others.

Have not seen any TechniGold armatures sold as spareparts akin the TechniPower & TechniTuned ones widely found.

TechniGold spareparts brushes were different to ones sold for TechniTuned/TechniPower.
