tr-15t resurection

Recommended Posts

thought i'd start a bit of build thread / question and thoughts thingy . bought this one on the weekend for the sum of $150 au ,it is complete but is missing a few decals and the engine is badly gummed.

comming from a nitro background in this hobby i have set about stripping the engine and have manages to get it to turn , i havent been able to get the sleeve out yet but i think a bit of heat will get things moving nicley.

there isnt really much that needs to be done to this truck ,i do need to test the sanwa radio but everything looks ok , the engine being the main centre of my attention it need a good clean as the last owner never ran it and bought it off the original owner some 12 years ago. mechanically the engine looks sound with heaps of pinch in the sleeve.

i do have another rough example on its way ,if there isnt too much missing i may build a runner with some modern gear in it as this one is more or less gonna be a shelfer.

Glad to see that you secured that one and it's gone to a good home. It looked pretty tidy in the sale pics. Now it's time for you to get the camera out and take some pics for the gang !

I probs should of taken pics before I stripped it lol.

I have encountered my first issue , the mdc system seemed a bit loose I removed I and disassembled it everything looks good with no sighs of wear , but then it hit me the original builder forgot to put in the 1280 plastic bush between the tension spring and the mdc ,does anyone see it a drama that I slip in a ball bearing there instead of a bush which I don't have??

Shouldn't be a problem as it is just a spacer for the adjuster to bind against , just make sure that the spring seat is spread across the bearings so it can't work loose ( it shouldn't as it has a lock nut holding it all on ), maybe use a thin spread washer to reach the outer edge of the bearing case if it doesn't reach

just redid the shocks they were all a-ok so hopefully its just getting the engine to run ,its a big clean up I'd say whoever ran this thing last didn't shut it down properly and left fuel in the engine and tank.

bit more progress ,after a bit of gentle force I got the carb to move ,then had a awesome run and have the truck back together ,just need a plug and a air filter element.

one issue that I have noticed that one the carb linkages are setup and I test the throttle it seems to over cam and get stuck at what which is not really what I want ,anybody have any tips or tricks as by hopefully sunday I want to fire this this up.

Are the linkages set up as per the manual , with the silicone tube buffers etc , have you fitted a secondary return spring to the throttle , and install a 'fail safe' to the throttle servo . Check the throttle rod placing on the servo horn hole , this can over cam if it is in the wrong hole . Is the carb rotor shaft free to move easily and return when moved by hand? and are all of the components present in the carb itself , is anything missing ?

I've checked everything ,its all in place as per the manual ,I'm thinking about putting a return spring similar to what I use on the older t maxxs' but im a bit unsure as to where to mount it , its been so long since I've worked with a rotary carb too.

its almost like over time the carb arm has become overly flexible if you will , I'm working on it atm and hopefully ill have it solved.

Looks good . The original air filter is still available btw .

Are all of the servo saver spring bands etc fitted as per manual ? - it looks like they are

You can see my TR15T's ( and my 1/3rd scale Nitro Kart ) here on the Glow engines sig :-

You can polish up the cylinder head if you feel like it and have the time , they polish up well .

* the pull starter handle slots into the oblong hole in the roll bar end on to keep it tidy :)

thank for the complements guys , its always good to start with a decent truck ,I haven't really stripped this truck down much as it was so clean in the first place , the engine took nearly a week from go to whoa as it wasn't stored properly but all good now

lil update ,I took it for a bit of a spin yesterday , the engine fired on the 4th pull and idled well considering how long it has sat ,still needs fine adjustments but the main issue was the mdc. I was getting maybe 10% drive so I just let it idle through the tank as I thought it would be good to loosen thing up and get them lubed. I pull the clutch system down and wet sanded the discs and pads until they were shiny hopefully tomorrow I will retest and get a quick vid
