Bruiser re-re Brushless esc/motor combo

Recommended Posts

After a decent combo for more control and settings etc rather than our right power. Aiming to use bruiser for general running and some crawling and be good to be able to adjust esc to suit either of these like slow it down for crawling etc if possible?

Recently got trackstar combo from hobbyking for 1/10th buggy not used yet but looks good for price.

If you want to stick with brushed then the mtroniks tio rock ESC is a good bet, 5A BEC keeps the servo happy and it has good drag brakes to hold the truck still on downhill sections.

You could swap out motor for a 35/45t one to kill the top speed a little but you also but ore torque thru the gearbox which maybe isn't the best thing long term with plastic gears etc.

Thanks yeah guess brushed will have a lot of features for control to, and they are cheaper to boot!

Best not get torquier one, though do have the optional slipper clutch to add to.

Will use esc to slow things down less top end etc or similar lol!

There's utube video some guy in Japan using Tamiya brushless setup. It's very fast I don't think he even went up to 3rd gear. He was running with the body off :-) in case of roll over lol

In brushless you probably need a 21.5T brushless motor to be comparable performance to a the silver can, you might get away with a 17.5T (certainly if you can limit throttle travel through EPA settings on the TX)

Well the tble-02 ESC isn't too expensive, if a bit fiddly to set up. and banzai have the motors.

My only concern would be the weak servo power feed ( you could ubec it ) and what sort of drag brake the tamiya ESC would provide.

I'd also be a bit wary of anything other than a silver can motor's effect on longevity of the gearbox. Even though tamiya have the CR tuned. 35T motor they only recommend that for the CR01 chassis and still say only to use silver can in the high lift three speeds.

I've fitted a Hilux with a Brushless setup through an HPI crawler king reduction gearbox, for the exact reason you state.

It works very well and gives ridiculous levels of control and torque and you get to keep the use of the 3 speed box. You fit the motor to the reduction unit then the reduction to the 3 speed box.

Yep, just bolts on, it's originally intended for HPI Wheely Kings to convert them into crawlers so perfect for doing just that.

I don't know part numbers but Googling for 'HPI reduction gearbox' will show you them I'm sure :)

Thanks its about £20 not to much, do you think there will be any worry if extra torque put through the 3 speed or anything?

Ahh may not fit bruiser as motor will clash with front chassis plate thing! doh, Im guessing you are using on hi-lift 3 speed?

This pic shows its about 20mm wide extra and motor is lifted up some but may not clear it on bruiser?

I guess it would come down to how you treat it, if you had the transmission locked up somehow and tried driving out of it then you could break something, but in normal crawling I couldn't see it being a problem.

I've got mine in a HiLift Hilux, the one with a lorry type gearbox, if the Bruiser uses the old style transmission then you'd need to measure up, but I think they had a 750 size motor, so more space around the motor if using a 540 sized motor or the HPI reduction unit.

All my stuff is tucked away in storage at the moment so I can't get any pictures of the Hilux with it fitted, otherwise I'd post something up of for you.

I have to re-re uses 540 motor but if you look in pic above from JYCM3 with a tamiya brushless, its the black brace that holds 2 rails together, a stoock 540 is shorter but not by much. I have about 1cm between on of 540 and chassis plate, this looks like the reduction box is thicker.

I guess I may just have to buy and try.

I see what you mean.....

Personally I'd build a new body mount, but it's not always that simple with limited tools and facilities.

Another option would be an RC4WD reduction unit, they appear to keep the motor inline with the reduction unit and I'd guess they'd use a planetary gear system rather than an offset spur (so tougher) but they cost more - http://store.rc4wd.com/Gear-Reduction-Unit_c_28.html

Be careful on RC4WD.com, can be seriously wallet damaging if you're into scale stuff.

Its not the body mount more the flat plate behind end bell of motor, with the 2 cross (X) indentations on. behind this is only about 1cm, HPI on lifts motor a bit to so might clear it.

Haha, now I 'actually' see what you mean.

It might be possible to fit some spacers between the top chassis rail and the cross plate itself, to lower it a little if needed, but would take some trial and error to clear the spring hangers. I hadn't realised how much difference there is between a Hilux and a Bruiser!!
