The Star Wars thread

Recommended Posts

What with us being less than three weeks away from the release of what might end up being the biggest grossing film of all time ...The Force Awakens... I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread dedicated to all things Star Wars that we can keep coming back to. I know there have been a few tidbit threads on SW stuff in the past but, now that the franchise is back...and here to stay for a long, long time...I think a proper thread dedicated to everything that is coming in the future, and has gone in the past, would be a nice idea,

And in a place like Tamiya Club, which is driven almost solely by 1980s nostalgia, there has got to be a lot of people who love Star Wars almost as much as their Tamiya cars.

So to start the ball rolling then...who else is like me, giddily excited for Episode VII? Do you conduct several daily Google searches for new snippets for the new film? Have you watched the trailers probably more than a hundred times? I have.

I have already got my tickets booked of course, for two showings. The first in 2D and the second in IMax 3D.

I have to say, from what I have seen from the trailers so far, the movie looks like it is going to be special. And make up for the various disappointments of Episodes I, II and III.

A penny for your thoughts, please. :)

Was episode II so bad you mentioned it twice ? ;)

I will try and go and watch it on the big screen when the worst of the rush is over. it's one of those films you have to watch at the cinema. :)

Lol. Well, yeah actually, it was.;)

It will be interesting to see when the "rush" does die down. If it's a great film then word of mouth will ensure that it is still in cinemas a couple of months after release, and might end up beating Avatar's gross record.

Agree with you though. Not only does it need to be seen on the big screen, but 3D is a must too. The special effects on this film look incredible.

Although I consider myself to be a Star Wars fanatic, I don't think am quite into geekdom, Nevertheless, I cannot resist visiting the cantina forums in anticipation of this film. I am holding fast against reading any spoilers though.

Do we have a way of hiding spoilers on these forums?

I love the original trilogy and would say they were pretty influential in many ways to my development. I love the depth of characters combined with the wisdom and moral direction they embodied and the general interaction and camaraderie. I have a photo of me opening the millenium falcon bought by my grandparents in 1980! When I was about 20 I started re-collecting all the figures/ships etc. I have about 4 or 5 different box sets of the original trilogy (including the metal tin uber rare one with the complete script) and then episodes 1,2,3 came out, what a dissapointment! There were some cool bits but in general the acting was wooden, the storyline went to pot and lots of daft characters and accents. Instead of all the genuine passion found in the original films it was purely a commercial tool in my opinion. It kind of ruined the Star Wars universe for me a bit. I still enjoy the original trilogy in the same way, but I no longer spend any money on any of it. When my kids were born and about 4 years old, I let them open up and unbox all my toys (some were rare characters etc) and play with them!

That said, Disney always seem to do a good job and put a decent amount of depth into their movies so I'm looking forward to it, not over enthused with the trailers (lots of crash, bang, wallop yee ha) but I love the bit with Solo and Chewy and having the old cast back is fantastic! I haven't booked tickets yet so I'll see it whenever, not fussed about watching it on the first night. I sound like a right misery guts but I've been caught up in the Star Wars franchise money machine so much in the past that I don't partake in it nowadays.

Earlier this year my wife and I took the boys to Star Wars secret cinema, (empire strikes back) now that was awesome!! I'm sure I'll get more excited closer to the time. Enjoy your viewings, sounds fun watching it in 2d and 3d. A load of my friends are going at 12.05am opening day, I'm not going because it doesn't feel right not watching it with the kids first, pity though, would have been a real laugh!

Agree, Nitomor, the prequels were almost completely lacking in so much of what made the original trilogy great.

What makes a Star Was film special is an interesting story, being character driven and having groundbreaking, but realistic special effects. The prequels had very little of that, but from what I have seen in the trailers and read in articles the new movie redelivers all of those things.

It may not end up being a fantastic film but I will be able to forgive them that, simply because this time they have done their very best to deliver a movie "for the fans".

I guess there must be a lot of people on here who collected the toy figures back in the 80's?

Must admit, that was one of the few popular kids toys that I was never really into. I am sorely tempted to get a Kylo Ren figure from the Disney Store though. :P

I do have a Stormtrooper mug coming as one of my Xmas prezzies too. B)

I'm super excited, but to be honest I really don't like the new trailer with the "these eyes!" line over and over... it seems over-acted.

Funny story I remember being probably 5 years old and seeing Return of the Jedi in the theater with my parents. I remember the scene where Luke heals in the tube of liquid vividly. I think I also saw E.T. in the theater around that age. I'm not sure if I was supposed to be in those movies at that age or if, being the age where seat belts were optional and everyone smoked everywhere, maybe it wasn't as strict as it is today.

The only thing that really put me off the trailer for the new film is some pilot in an X-wing screaming 'Yee-haa', please! So many films nowadays are all special effects, huge explosions, super fast pace, it gets tiring and monotonous.

The original trilogy weren't fast paced at all, they drew you in with depth and tackling all sorts of existential questions in a sci fi setting/manner. The original Battlestar Galactica is another one of my favourites, again because of the upstanding moral guidance and respect the characters showed one another, the characters portrayed figures you would look up to and worthy of looking up to. Rather than superficial characters being full of empty one liners. Although entertaining to an extent, the Transformers and Avengers franchises are guilty of being on the wrong side of this. Seeing the pilot in the new trailer reminds me of stupid Anakin flying his daft yellow fighter with a stupid non stop commentary, "now this is pod racing" etc. Ugh. I really hope Disney can do it justice. I was really pleased when Lucas sold out to Disney tbh after the dismal prequals so lets hope they work their magic!

We used to have a dedicated star wars room in the house once upon a time, the characters were set out in diorama type scenes of the film! I have a stormtrooper and DV helmet still along with a load of Master Replicas lightsabres, what I would have done to have had them as a kid!!

That scene was actually in The Empire Strikes Back. :)

I actually think that a lot of the lines that are in the trailers won't make it to the final cut. I also think that a lot of the lines are deliberate misdirection by Abrams. He is notorious for it.

Oops - I stand corrected! Thanks. :P

One other Star Wars thing - one of my favorite toys as a kid was a B-wing toy, with wings that opened up and a cockpit that spun around. I recently found a re-re version recently sold by K-mart and gave it to my son. Was super psyched to find one.

Luke healing in the tube was Empire strikes back, 1980.

Beat me to it. :)

His Star Trek remake was superb and extremely well cast. Bringing Nimoy back for such a decent part was also magical.

That's the first film I remember seeing in a cinema...how awesome is that? Best of the trilogy by far!

It's no secret that a lot of what will be in this film will be scenes that are a nod to certain scenes in the original trilogy. I take the Poe Dameron "yee-haa" moment to be a nod to Han Solo's equivalent at the end of episode IV.

This one looks to have good acting in it too but I agree, the pacing has to allow for quality character and story development. I would be mortified if this ended up being as bad as the likes of the Transformers films.

Even Harrison Ford is raving about the film and for decades he has tried to forget he was even in them.

Super excited for the new films. Hope they live up to expectations. On a side note, I'm addicted to a mobile game, Star Wars Heroes of the Galaxy. It's a free to play but so much fun.

Star Wars (no secondary title needed yet) is the first movie I remember seeing, back in the summer of '77 when I was four years old. My mom didn't want to see it, so Dad took me to the drive-in in his Beetle, which was awesome in and of itself; I loved riding in that car. I still remember that first viewing, as well as the first time I saw Empire (at the mall) and Jedi (at the multiplex they built when they closed the drive-in where I saw the first one). Loved them all, can recite nearly every line of dialogue by heart, and a metric ton of the toys and action figures, though it didn't seem like nearly enoguh of them at the time. Star Wars began my love affair with sci-fi that still continues to this day.

Then... in 1998, I bought into the Episode I hype, hard. I was so excited. And I really, really tried to like it. But... Jar-Jar. And Darth Lame (or whatever he was called). And Mannequin Skywalker. That movie was indescribably awful. I know I saw II and III, but I couldn't tell you a single thing about them.

And to add insult to injury, Lucas went back and mucked up the originals. I can't even watch my "Special Edition" DVDs of the first trilogy, because the "wrong" parts stick out like a sore thumb. Lucas, and now Disney, keep promising to put them back the way they belong, and re-release them, but so far they haven't delivered. My biggest Star Wars-related regret is giving away my VHS copies of the original trilogy.

As for this latest installment, I keep thinking they should have called it "Episode VII: A New Hype." I don't care whether it's any good or not; I'm already sick of hearing about it, it's been jammed down our throats so much. I'm more excited for the movie adaptation of "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline than I am for the new Star Wars. I'll see it, I'm sure, and in the theater, probably (though not in 3D; it gives me a headache), but I'm not going to get my hopes up. I really hope it's good, but... meesa no sure it gonna be.

I really hope they don't use the "I have a bad feeling about this" line. My kids watch the clone wars cartoons, and between that and the prequals they've trotted that line out SO MANY times now its wearing very thin!

I forgot about Lucas mucking up the originals with his special edition. I still have the originals on VHS; metal tin version (that's an awesome set). Think I also have the widescreen format and another one, they might be 'special edition' ones though. I have another one with a tattoine type packaging too. Sucker! As well as the individual DVD's!
