E-revo vs E-maxx for basher

Recommended Posts

OK, I know, I know, not a Tamiya question, but a valid one that hopefully someone can help with.

A friend of mine is splitting up a fairly extensive collection, and while I'd love to take all his vintage shelfers and well-specced runners, I can only realistically afford one thing. He's offered me either his E-maxx or his E-revo for a good price.

Both are the older brushed motor versions, he has the crazy brushless setup too but it's beyond my budget right now. These are the full-size versions, not the 1/16 (I have the 1/16 E-revo VXL and it's aces! :D )

I really need a proper, solid, reliable and fast truck in my life, so my real question is, which is best for generic multi-surface bashing on any given day? The E-maxx does seem to be built more as a "throw it at anything and it'll stick" kind of truck whereas the E-revo is more race-oriented or, at least, a little more committed to going fast on smoother surfaces rather than bouncing over anything it happens to land on.

Any advice much appreciated :)

I have had both in various varieties, and both are great trucks to drive. Imo the E-maxx is a Monster truck, where the E-revo is more of a crossover Monster truck/Truggy. Both RC's have provided me with endless hours of fun, but if you don't want to upgrade frequently, the E-revo holds up the best in my opinion. There are also different types of E-maxx's. The old 3906 E-maxx is not worth it anymore. It have to be upgrated quite a bit to handle even light abuse. The newer types 3905 and the brushless version 3908, are better, and a bit longer, which makes them drive much better. But here is a few pros and cons.

E-maxx 3905 and 3908:

Pros: Drives well out of the box. The brushed edition has plenty of power for a truck of that size. Waterproof electronics. Higher than the E-revo, so easier to handle the rough with the E-maxx. Endless possibilities of upgrading.

Cons: Bulkheads are a proven weakspot, and a pity to change. RPM has a smart solution now though. Stock tires doesn't provide much grip (Proline makes excellent solutions).

E-revo:

Pros: Drives extremely well just out of the box. Tires are better then the E-maxx's. Waterproof electronics. Lower cog, which makes it easier to handle.

Cons: Don't have the Monster truck factor, that the E-maxx has (depending on who you are, it can be good or bad). Not the same possibility for upgrades, if you want to strengthen things up.

My choice would be easy. I would get the E-maxx, but promarely cause I a s..... for all the nice upgrades it can have. If you just want to get it and drive it, get the E-revo. Both are excellent trucks.

If you ran into any questions, or want to clear anything out on these trucks, feel free to ask. I have been building and driving these things for more than a decade, and have tried nearly any aftermarket part you can throw on especially the E-maxx.

E-Revo = Performance based

E-Maxx = Fun based

Also, as mentioned earlier I think the E-Revo may be a bit more durable.

Thanks for the advice all :)

These are both 2nd-hand and well-used trucks but they're pretty much all I can afford. "Back in the day" a few mates had E-maxxes and they'd happily share them around, they were easily the best all-round bashing car at any bash we went to, be it tarmac, grass, mud, rocks, they even managed to beat dedicated crawlers to the hilltops using brute force and ignorance where skill and finesse couldn't make it up.

An E-revo joined the fleet a while later and was used at bashes and in some racing, I don't think I ever played with it but was told it was a more "dedicated" car. However I've read a few reviews since that say the E-revo is generally the better of the two in stock trim. I don't really want something I have to throw lots of hopups at, I want something that is great out of the box. I've also read the E-revo can be lifted as high as an E-maxx if I want more ground clearance.

Both are for sale for the same (bargain) price, the E-maxx is ready to go but the E-revo needs a bit of a service. Doing a service on the E-revo should help me get acquainted with it.

Thanks again for the advice :)

I've had an E-Revo for several years. I don't race, it's just a basher. When I say it's 'just' a basher, I mean it's an awesome basher!!!

Mine has the 775 motor and a few alloy bits. It gets run hard (on 4S) but not abused. In all that time I've had to replace two parts, a bent steering arm and bent motor plate. It's quick, it's very tough, very tweak-able and just great fun. I'd happily recommend it.

I don't have Klausen's experience with the E-Maxx but I have had two of them. One has been sold, the other is for sale. They're good tough trucks, they just seemed a bit 'meh' compared to the Revo.

I love that shell IBIFTKH, the big downside (IMO) of this kind of truck is they never look great so I've been looking for a way of adding at least some interest to it.

It's a ProLine shell, they make some nice 1/8th ish shells for the Maxx and Revo.

I also like their Ford Raptor...

Afraid so, the little devil gets everywhere! (He's in the Revo above too!!)

He (and a friend) even ride a Kyosho sometimes...

I have a few Emaxx trucks

They are great bashers

If you go with the brushless option then you do need to upgrade them, to make them more reliable.

I don't have an Erevo, but do have the Summit, thats basically an Erevo with 775 motor and extra locking diffs.

Great truck, thats also got the go anywhere ability,

just not quite so "Bad ***" in my book.

Personally I prefer the Emaxx as I like to tinker and upgrade as I go.

If I were to find an Erevo roller I would probably buy that aswell

At the Moment the new Xmaxx has caught my attention, would love one of those
