Tamiya schort course truck (SCT)?

Recommended Posts

Being exclusively a buggy guy I know nothing about the SCT market but that seems to be where a lot of the action is. We have monster, stadium and crawlers but Tamiya doesn't really offer a SCT do they? I'm not sure I'd consider the TT-02T like the Sand Shaker a SCT.

I'm wondering if it'd be possible to mate up some 3rd party SCT body onto a TT-02T, or maybe a DT-02, TT-02B or some other chassis so I could run SCT races if there aren't enough buggy guys at the track on any particular night. I can see myself getting a SCT by years end and personally I'd rather it be a Tamiya under the skin. Which chassis would you suggest, and which body would fit?

Agrios body on the DT-03 should be almost a perfect match, wheelbase wise. Won't make the DT-03 an SCT, but it will at least to some extent look like one. :P And I'm unsure about suitable wheels and tires.

I have both and I've just checked, the DT-03 wheelbase is about an inch too short for the Agrios body.

I'm certainly not having any luck with topics related to wheelbase today. Had 287mm in my head for both the DT-03 and the Agrios. I'll better shut up until my brain at least works as normal, although that's not too brilliant either.

I thought it would be difficult to tell with the Agrios shell as it is mounted so high up, a little like how the Lunchbox shell has a shorter wheelbase than the Lunchbox in the form in which we know it. Is the Agrios shell similar in size to other SCTs, which are known for ridiculous proportions?

Thinking it over, I wonder if Tamiya has any components in their current recreational (v. racing) chassis that are on par with the resilience of those in other manufacturers' offerings. I thought that if not the case, a competitive Tamiya SCT would need to use components from the TRF kits, particularly suspension pieces.

Honestly, I'd say get a Traxxas 2WD Slash if you want an R/C short course truck that IS in fact a proper short course truck.

If that is out of question, then there still are some Tamiya R/Cs that look like SCs, but they are either not tough enough to qualify as SC (TA-02T Ford-F150 Baja), have fundamental drawbacks in looks, gearing and wheel/tire options (DT-02 Nissan Titan), or are monster trucks in SC body disguise (TXT-2 Agrios).

The Agrios wheelbase is about 330mm. It's stupidly massive.

Here's the "1/10th scale" Agrios body with an also "1/10th scale" Rock Socker / Stadium Blitzer:

+1 on the Slash. Either 2wd or 4wd.

I am a confirmed Tamiya fan. I love Tamiya, I collect Tamiya, Tamiya is my favorite RC company, and 90% or more of my collection is Tamiya but ... they have NOTHING that will hold a candle to the Slash. Period.

The Slash family are vehicles that Tamiya should have made, but failed to think of first. Tamiya compounded that error by not responding immediately with something that could compete. Now that train has left the station and is never coming back.

The SCT market is really tilted towards Traxxas although there are some others out there making fine products that do well on the race tracks, but for market saturation I'd place my bet on Traxxas as it seems everybody has one or wants one. Tamiya isn't even in the conversation, unfortunately.

Just my opinion. (No Tamiyas were harmed in this opinion.) ;)

I figured that's what you guys would say. I'm not dying to have a SCT but they're so popular that if I want to race, having one "on deck" as it were just in case there aren't enough buggy guys to make a heat seems like a wise move. I think I probably should get a racing buggy for myself FIRST though. ;)
