home made Ferrari 512S Coda lunga sports car for GPc or TT

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone please allow me to introduce myself - my name is James and Im a freelance design engineer - been Tamiya & scale R/c model mad since childhood and massive Group C fan (both real and tamiya)

I am a fan of the Big sports car era of motorsport from the late 60's early 70's and decided it would be cool to have some Rc replicas from this era - think Steve Mcqueen's film 'Le mans' in RC!

so I went about designing my favourite car from the era the 'long tail' Ferrari 512S from 1970.

I have a 'home copy' of the software I use at work so started researching the subject and thinking how it could be made to work in 1/10 scale. I had originally intended the model to be for group C chassis but as I found later it actually works well on TT01/2 too with shorter front springs to bring the front down.

I had the body mould made by a local machine company that specialises in F1 pattern work - they did me a favour as they could use photos of the mould on their website as the F1 work is confidential and my RC is not! its made from TB650 as per F1 patterns too.

I found a local vacforming firm to make some trial pulls from the mould and first results were good - I had myself a model!

the local firm were having production difficulties due to a fire at their premises and were struggling to do a production batch for me so I took the mould to another company who produced truly superb results.

the body is intended to have 3D printed detail parts (light buckets, rear spoiler, radiator ducts and side sills) these have been produced by shapeways and finish the model off well - they do add to the cost of the body tho. I am currently investigating making a vac mould for the light buckets and side sills to reduce the total cost of a body set.

I had a custom sticker sheet made up with all the period sponsors logos too - these are a real joy in themselves - I love all those 70's racing logos!

luckily the cars in period had quite minimal colour schemes (red or yellow all over some with stripe! ) so painting / graphics are easy ! I produced a paint mask template for the windows and lights as Im impatient when it comes to masking out!

I am happy with the finished result - its not a prefect replica but captures the shape of the car well I think. I have some 3d printed radiator ducts but havn't dared cut the big holes in the doors to fit them - I| can live without them for the moment!

so - quite alot for a first post - sorry for rambling - I dont usually have too much time to post on forums - this is the first place I have shown my project to the RC community & I would love to know what you think!

thanks for reading,

yours sincerely,

James

yes katan the only thing thats not local is the shapeways 3D printed parts!

although I found 3d print uk in london are the cheapest for getting wheel sets made as they charge by volume in machine not by qty of material in the part.

thanks everybody for your interest in my project I have some bodies available to sell - the price of the body is £40 plus postage dependant on location. I will ship anywhere.

The body comes with stickers and racing number. It is designed to have 3d printed parts that are available separately from shapeways here: https://www.shapeways.com/shops/sxtech

The body was designed initially for the Tamiya group C chassis but also fits TT01 and TT02 chassis perfectly well.

I have designed wheel sets to go with the body that fit the tamiya group c chassis and use either the tamiya sponge tyre or if preferred the HPI vintage racer scale rubber tyre.

A set of wheels for conventional Hex type fitting specifically for TT-01 TT-02 chassis will be uploaded to shapeways shortly.

If you would like a body then please could you email me your location and I will paypall invoice....

james@stationxtech.com

if no paypall then email me and we can sort it!

thanks again

James

Looks amazing.

Can you take a lot more photos please?

Would love to see more angles of the finished ones.

And it would be great to see an unpainted she'll with the 3d parts on sitting on each chassis option.

more pics as requested:

the mould was CNC machined from TB650 - just like an F1 pattern!

the body sides must be left long if the 3D printed side pods are not used.

I have designed some radiator ducts for the model but they will probably foul the chassis if used on a running car... I see these as 'BETA' developments parts!

I hope the detail in the body comes across in the pics - the scribe detail is very crisp on the body - the rear section of the body is cut away and stuck underneath to give a realistic rear end undercut with lights and cooling exits scribed in.

thanks nito - i love the P4 - would like the kyosho shell too - but v expensive now!

next will be porsche 917 then perhaps the ferrari 312P.... not sure yet.

Im considering trying to crowd fund the cost of tooling the 917....

the stratos is 1/8th scale kyosho landmax... its a beast! lovely body - I collected the body then found a wheel set and built it on a used landmax chassis. i would like to convert it to brushless. not run it yet...

thanks!

Agreed - this is a fabulous and well-designed project. I love the wheels and the obvious care paid to completing the design. The wheels and body accessories should really give the finished product the look anything calling itself a Ferrari 512S really needs ;)

Excellent work!

Looking through all of your posts... wow just wow.

I second the suggestion for a Ferrari P4. I like that genre of car.... big fan of the Alfa 33 Stradale.

Did you sell out your run of the 512S and 917k?
