Nobbi1977 1793 Posted July 27, 2015 Well here it is again, my funny tablecloth Tonight's project has been waiting for a while. I got it on a whim as a bargain from Tamico, they took the LED kit out and sold it off cheap. Standard kit Hop-ups It is at this point that in need input and feedback. I have three sets of tyres, universals and alloy dampers I am not sure whether to use. Well book open and I cannot even get the first page done. For some reason I have a 17T pinion, totally useless for this build. 16T is out of stock so I got the 20T. Well waiting for the post now to continue
Fried Tyres 48 Posted July 27, 2015 I have the same Junfac wheels and Kong style tyres on my CC-01 Unimog. I like them, especially the look of the wheels, but they can be a little hard to balance the tyres on the beadlock. I also have the Tamiya uni's but I'm running stock dampers so they're not being over worked at this stage. Eventually I'll get some dampers which allow more travel and I'll cut away some of the GPM hubs etc. There are some pics in this Build forum area of my attempt. Chris. Nobbi1977 1793 Posted July 27, 2015 The wheels were about £8 posted from China, not sure who the seller was now but they seem very soft.
Ad Lav 367 Posted July 27, 2015 Look forward to this, quite fancy one myself. Lots of hop ups!
ChrisRx718 4470 Posted July 28, 2015 Bummer about the pinion, I appreciate how frustrating it is to be waiting for such an insignificant but vital part! The hop up dampers offer no more travel than the stock items but are silky smooth and have the added benefit of being able to add pre-load on the springs (useful if you find the accessories you are bound to add to the shell end up making things a bit heavier!) Nobbi1977 1793 Posted July 29, 2015 Well Modelsport came up trumps again And built Not sure the motor mount does much but I left the gasket off anyway to try and get a bit of heat transfer Diff built Got to love a RCBearings kit 0.2mm shim used to get this fitting perfect My usual choice of lubricant Motor in Chrome parts, just a bit tarty 0.5mm shimming Prop-shaft More bits not sure they add anything but they look nice Not going to fit this yet, maybe later All done for today
ChrisRx718 4470 Posted July 29, 2015 Hmm, that's a lot of grease on those gears buddy. Plastic gears only need a very very light smear otherwise you introduce more friction as the grease is compressed into spaces which are too small. Some people even argue that plastic gears shouldn't need any lubrication, but I've always ran with a tiny bit just to reduce noise. I sound super critical and hope I don't come across a bit of a donkey.

It is very non-sticky and non fling so it does not add much if any friction. It is aerosol so looks like a lot when applied but is a lot less when the fizzing stops. My first build used tons of ceramic grease and I could hardly move the thing. That needed much cleaning out........
XV Pilot 1936 Posted July 30, 2015 Looks good so far! The GPM upper damper mounts are a good idea, particularly at the rear where the plastic ones are rather thin and weedy. Looking forward to watching the build progress!
mr crispy 2293 Posted July 30, 2015 It's coming along nicely. I love the chain wax, it's perfect for RC needs and works well on both plastic and metal gears.
Nobbi1977 1793 Posted July 30, 2015 It's coming along nicely. I love the chain wax, it's perfect for RC needs and works well on both plastic and metal gears.Well it works well on my bike at 150mph+ so I guessed it should be OK. I will run model enough one day to check it works when I do a strip down [emoji3]
mr crispy 2293 Posted July 30, 2015 That's how I started using it, had a can leftover when I sold my bike 😉 Some auto lube can do nasty things to plastic as its intended for use on metal gears. But if it's ok for O ring chains then it should be fine.
Nobbi1977 1793 Posted August 3, 2015 Well a bit more done at the weekend. This is a slow build...... My start point Steering bits. Why to they not supply instructions? Top plug thing Bottom plug thing Top arm Bottom arms Removed and connecting arm added. Again why no instructions? Front suspension, think this will be the focus of future work. There is not a lot of travel here And this is where we leave it for now
XV Pilot 1936 Posted August 6, 2015 Looks good so far. What colour scheme do you have planned, and are there any scale accessories that you'd like to add?
Nitomor 2122 Posted August 6, 2015 Nice build and hop ups. What bike do you have?
Nobbi1977 1793 Posted August 6, 2015 Nice build and hop ups. What bike do you have? 750SS Ducati and a '54 Ariel Red Hunter. All the fast stuff is well behind me in my past now............
Nobbi1977 1793 Posted September 1, 2015 So a bit more Replacing stock with another part Camera battery flat so skipped a bit 4 link kit Not a good start, damage to the ball Upper Lower I have to say the quality of this kit is very poor. I think I will fit it and then get some good quality balls and make some links. I need more parts to make it fit better so these are on order While I wait These look nice Almost done Arrgggg these do not come with springs Added DT-02 hard hop-up springs I had in stock, correct length but maybe a bit hard
XV Pilot 1936 Posted September 1, 2015 Looks like good progress is being made. Pity about the GPM 4-link quality - normally their parts are pretty decent.
ChrisRx718 4470 Posted September 1, 2015 I sold my GPM 4-link for the same reason. There's a seller on eBay flogging similar kits to the Junfac links which are much nicer in quality, but don't offer as much flex...
Ad Lav 367 Posted September 2, 2015 Coming along nice and quick. Look forward to seeing what you do with the body shell.
Thommo 1218 Posted September 2, 2015 I've just picked up my first CC01 kit so I'm quite interested in this build. Please tell me, what is the advantage of the GPM or other 4 link rear suspension ? Is the standard kit 4 link restricted for travel or something ?
Nobbi1977 1793 Posted September 2, 2015 I've just picked up my first CC01 kit so I'm quite interested in this build. Please tell me, what is the advantage of the GPM or other 4 link rear suspension ? Is the standard kit 4 link restricted for travel or something ? To be honest I have never had a standard one but I am led to believe standard travel distance and articulation is not great. The limiting factor is always going to be the front suspension but a fully dropped rear end always looks cool hanging over some rocks. Tbh if I was planning this build again I would have started with a CR-01 but I was not as enthralled with the idea of crawling then so this was a good compromise. XV Pilot 1936 Posted September 2, 2015 I ran the stock arrangement on my CC-01 briefly before fitting the Junfac upgrade kit, and found three issues with it: It doesn't move smoothly - binding is an issue. It doesn't have much in the way of travel. The lower links flex when load is applied, interfering with the damping provided by the shocks, which are mounted to the ends of the links rather than to the rear axle. Thommo 1218 Posted September 2, 2015 Thanks Guys, I thought as much because so many CC01's have the Junfac or GPM kit installed. Much appreciated !
Nobbi1977 1793 Posted September 9, 2015 Well the extra bits I needed turned up GPM cheese screws strike. They just rounded when I came to take them out and they were not even tight. Tried to drill the tops off but no luck Not a happy bunny. I had to spend an hour smashing my chrome axle apart to get the parts out to rebuild in to the stock black one. Rebuilt Shock position means I might as well fit the range extenders Nice kit Built before having to swap one of the mounts around. Ok. What is going on?? The four link is fitted but the arms hit the LWB mounts so the suspenstion will not go down to a normal level. Is the idea to cut the posts off? Not a fan of this kit. Tempted to bin the 4 link and buy another one. Arrrrrggggggg
