I'm not a Mattel Hot Wheels collector, but my parents and relatives bought me some when I was just a few years old 40 years ago. When I graduated from university my parents encouraged me to take *everything* when I was moving for my first job. A few times I thought about donating my small collection (about a dozen cars) to the local Goodwill, but it was a small enough box that it ended up traveling with me from state to state for various jobs.

I was poking around the house this evening and bumped into this collection again, and I thought I'd post some pictures of my early cars. I know there are serious collectors out there with NIB examples, and the cars with red striped tires are worth a little more, etc. All my cars are pretty well used -- you'll see which ones were used more than others below. I don't have any NIBs, nor I do put any real value on these. I just thought I'd show some of the fun styles from 40+ years ago.

If any of you have a few favorite Hot Wheels, feel free to post pictures so we can see what you have!

I once got a book on the history of Hot Wheels, prior to their 35th anniversary - as a boy, I drooled over the pictures, but also enjoyed the read. As such, I recognize some of the examples up there!

Now that I am older, I never stopped collecting Hot Wheels; only the cars have changed! Below are a modified Skyline GT-R R34, a mid-80s RX-7, a '70 Celica and a '62 Corvette:

My girlfriend firmly believes I am still 5 years old; nonetheless she has enabled me with that Corvette!

Every now and then I will stop in a store's toy aisle to see what Hot Wheels cars are there - I remember being surprised that they cast a Tyrrell P34, for instance, and took it to the checkout :D

While I am more a Lesney/Matchbox fan, I have to say I absolutely LOVE that Hot Wheels carry case and cars! Thanks for sharing these photos ;)

I still have this one but I did prefer the Majorettes from France. They were better done.

Until I figure out just how to post photos easily into the forums, well, my GIANT collection of Hot Wheels cars that I have been going on with since eBay began will have to wait. I just this year have begun a stint as a Mad Scientist and started altering Hot Wheels cars mostly, but I have been known to work over a Matchbox car too. Mostly my work is adding details, gap/shut lines, headlights/taillights, filling in grilles and other air scoops and such to add some depth. In the most work department, I might steal the wheels and rubber tires from a more expensive car to add to the simple $1 line to get my own version of a Treasure Hunt. I have been lucky enough to score about 7 Super Treasure Hunts this year that I will use as trade when I can get to the once a month meeting of the local Hot Wheels club.

To say that I like cars would be an understatement. 10 or so years ago, it would seem my brother and I were haveing a contest on who could collect the most small diecast Corvettes. Well, we both went out of that phase and where he has moved a couple of times and moved his collection on, mine is still here in a smaller capacity. It didn't help much that just a few years ago Hot Wheels molded one of my all time favorite UNDERDOG cars from the US Muscle era, the late 60's Chevy Nova, 1968 to be exact. I have about a dozen varients of that car and then Hot Wheels had to go and pull the trigger on Japanese imports of the 80s and such and it is now coming full circle.

When I was a kid, the Hot Wheels cars fit into two catagories, either fantasy make beleive car or a car you wanted to buy the real deal of when you were older. Now it is a few more catagories. They still fit the fantasy bill, and they are heavy on muscle cars, but now there is the added catagory of cars I sure wish I could have bought when they were cheap and I was younger. There is even a catagory now of cars I had owned, in the Honda sense that is.

I will see what I can do about getting the photo bucket thing all set up so you can see some of my OCD take over on fixing a Hot Wheels car to look real, but I can't promise that will happen too soon, you all know me, I am pretty slow and easily distracted......O look, something shiny..............

I don't actively collect them as such (honest) but somehow I've ended up with a colle... erm, pile of 150+ HotWheels/Matchbox/Majorette/JohnnyLightning/etc 1955-57 Chevy's. I remember buying a Matchbox one for 50p at a toy fair about 30 years ago 'cos I liked the hotrod flame paintjob, and, well, there you are.

A lot of them have been bought new for a quid or so while doing my ordinary supermarket shopping, it's a common casting and they repaint it every year or so. If I go to the states I make a point of looking in mainstream toy stores there too. I'm not precious about ripping the packaging open, though a handful are so cool I've left them NIB. I don't have 'em all catalogued or photographed either, but here's a sample one :

I own exactly ONE Hot Wheels car (my son owns a few of his own... he won't let me play with them... MOMMY! j/k)

I had to have this one b/c my dad (again with the "my dad" stuff, I swear I was never the daddy's boy I sound like) drove one exactly like this for a while when I was a kid. It was epic b/c my dad was literally a sasquatch.

Love it, getting schooled on how to post things here and found out that Walmart has their greedy little hands in the UK in the form of ASDA. HMMMMM I did get a laugh out of the fraudster who got jailed yesterday for staging a fall in hopes of 11,000, THAT was funny, folks just looking at his sorry butt lying on the ground, didn't see anyone rush to his aide. I would suspect that is exactly what would happen here in the USA, including the riots and brawls and fighting and killings on Black Friday, oh, that is coming up soon, can't wait to see the news. I better buy some popcorn and soda to watch with. ;)

Nice Beef, that Lil red express was a pretty cool stand out from the normal trucks of the era. They all looked so bland and squareish, so the graphics and the flashy paint job helped Dodge with a few sales I think. You ought to look up the Warlock, black version of the red truck in essence. Blackfoot Dave told me about that one, I had either forgotten or didn't know about them. Myself, the collectio....errr BIG A*() PILE is a mixture of some muscle from Europe, Japan, USA and then the kitchy cars and a few oddballs too. I still need to start shooting photos. I have an idea shown to me for a lightbox, and I might get that built this weekend.

Well, for some reason I happen to have Don Prudhomme's 1:24 Super Snake slingshot, and also his Pepsi Challenger funny car Hot Wheels on 1:64 scale. I got the 1:24 in exchange for a Stevie Wonder CD, and the funny car as a freebie when buying some books at the fleamarket. Anyway I thought it was more than ironic I had these and NOT a single Tom McEwen's vehicle over my speaker right beside me here!

Well, this morning I finally found the legendary Mongoo$e Hot Wheels funny car in mint condition. Not too happy about the price ($2.90, which was two times what I wanted to pay for it) but what the heck. I could have found it easy in the States, but the new USPS rates are totally killer. So, apart of that... I'm all bliss! :D

Here's Tom McEwen's car, the greatest driver to ever hit the dragstrips anywhere! ;)

Haha. Comes to show how crazy life can be. :)

That's a fantastic model dragster! I don't think I've seen that series before. Sadly, way out budget.

By the way, in case you haven't seen it, here's the Don Prudhomme's Super Snake 1:24 model Slingshot signature series by Shelby collectibles. I'm not a fan of the original paintscheme for this one (nothing against Prudhomme by the way) but still this is pure eye candy ;)

Definitely liking red,white and blue.

That would work either side of the pond. :)

THAT is one sexy Corvette you found Erich and I think you did a good job on the price, even by US prices, I would think that was a good deal considering the condition that one is in.

Nice cars indeed. Now, don't think I have anything against red, white, and blue myself. Those are my national colors, too, and I like them a whole lot! It's just that the Super Snake paintscheme isn't as cool as many other slingshots' from that era.

Thanks, Chris. That's what I thought -even though I wanted to pay half of it. Funny enough, it wasn't the looks that rang my bell this time, but the condition of the axles. Seriously, I'm starting to wonder if there are re-releases of these things cause for a 1977 model it seems as if it was removed from the blister just yesterday! :)

Did you guys know hotwheels and matchbox are both owned by the same parent company?

They are NOW, but it hasn't always been that way. I think it has been within the last decade the purchase was made as Matchbox began life as an English brand something like 15 years before Hot Wheels began in the USA. Regardless, I am glad they kept both namesakes alive, but the Matchbox line sure could use some life injecting molds and such. My local stores, mostly Walmart has about a 8 to 1 ratio of pegs for Hot Wheels versus Matchbox and that is the basic line, not including all the extra lines that Hot Wheels makes with a price tag over $1 and all the Monster trucks and the car carrying trucks and so on and so on.

I had one of those back in 1987 maybe 1988. It was one of those that changed color when getting wet.
