Is this motor dead?

Recommended Posts

It's a bit hard to tell from the camera angle, but it looks like you have a Team Orion Havok motor??.. (could you pull the motor out and take some photos of it?)

I'm not sure if the motor has an end bell that is held on with screws, or if it is crimped.. If its missing one, or both of the screws, then you will need to replace them, and from memory they are M2.6 and about 8-10mm long.. If its a crimped style motor, then you could try realigning the end bell, and then giving the crimps a tap with a hammer and screwdriver to reseat them back to their original position..

With the end bell being loose on the motor like it is, it is most certainly causing a misalignment in the bearings, and possibly allowing the armature to touch the magnets in the motor... Also, if the end bell has been allowed to turn or rotate from its original position, then it has probably altered the motors timing, and ALL of which could cause excessive current draw, and arcing at the brush gear..

Again it hard to say if the motor can be saved without seeing it.. If it hasn't been damaged (i.e. burnt out) from running it in this condition, then you may be able to tighten the end bell, and continue to use it..

Seems mighty ALIVE to me.

"Dead" means (to me anyway) it don't make a peep when you add power.

But if you keep gassing on it in that condition, it will soon be dead... :)

Depending upon the condition of the commutator, if you can re-attach the end bell securely, a new set of brushes and proper bedding in might cure the arcing. It may be arcing because the end bell is loose and the brushes are touching the comm on an edge rather than the large curved end of the brush.

I've took it out for now and put in a 15T instead. It is indeed a Team Orion Havok 17T.

I'll take the endbell off and take some more pics of inside.

Any tips on how to get a crimped on endbell off?

i think is safe to say is not in working condition. unless the round can is now oval and or the magnets are shot, these brush motor can be brought back to life by replacing the comm or the brushes? this particular motor can be brought back to life with lots of rpm left.

To be honest I'm not going to spend any money on it as I've got motors coming out of my ears but we'll see when I take it apart.

Fixed endbell usually held on by bent over tabs on can, just lever them up.

If you have any 'dead' mod motor you can transplant the armature into the mod can.
