Astute/King Cab Differential tip

Good Morning all, so I was rebuilding my Astute and Hilux gearbox's yesterday and I finally ran out of shims for the trans(!). Looking through my spareparts I found the 3mm shims that come with the rere Bruiser for fine tunning the mess and play of that trans. The shims fit perfectly in the Astute differential, their outside diameter is about half the size of the Astute's. Inorder to not create a cone shape out of the Astute shims over time and create new issues I placed the Bruiser shims in between two of the Astue shims on each side. Bingo, no more slip in the old differential. Holds up nicely in the Hilux as well. Was tested with a mild Brushless Novak in the Hilux.

The Astute/King Cab transmission can't manage faster motors than the 27 turns anyway.

I respectfully disagree brother. I ran modifieds in both of these gearbox's over 20 years ago. The only mod needed was the counter gear brace, which I still have. Consequently I think that was made by throp as well. I really dont understand the bad rep the gearbox got. The diff is good if you look after it, it is a 3 gear design, it was lacking a slipper. Like Ive said. Ive been using high hp motors in them for years. with ZERO issues. The lowest I had was a Reedy speed tripple, I think that was 14 turns. Torqy as all get out.

Probably you were very lucky. I destroyed many King Cab transmissions with the Dyna Run Stock motor that is 23T. Big wheels and high gear ratio probably were fatal for the differential.

Yup lack of slipper, poor design (adjusting for ball/ ball plate wear with shims once broken in, which nobody did) and a 3 step mechanical speed control (forward/reverse/forward/reverse/forward/reverse) equated to early deaths. But other factions as Max said, the larger reciprocating mass etc from the bigger wheels didn't help either.

Glad you are having success with it GTodd. I haven't had any problems with the king cab diff, and never had to use alloy braces.

I perfectly know why the Astute ball differential breaks.
I also know how to definitely fix it, but if you fix it, you will break the plastic iddle gear brace.
So you can also fix the plastic brace with an alloy brace, but you will break the gear teeth.
And if you don't break the gears teeth you will break the exagonal wheel adapters.
This is my long time experience with the King Cab and its diff.

I don't agree totally, carefully set up the ball diff can easily be used in the Astute (don't know about the trucks though). I ran down to 11 turn motors with that differential back in the days. I did use a slipper clutch with it though, that helped a lot.
