  1. Max - thanks for this info. This will be very useful when I tackle this! Best, Ben
  2. Thanks waterbok and xv pilot for the quick replies and advice. I had a chance to run the Kingcab out in the garden today to get a better sense of the problems. Actually I think there has not been a drop in power. It seemed to have good power for about 10mins. What I noticed the other day was that it was struggling to get up the incline of our garden and I put this down to a lack of power but I think it may be the diff. When I hit the throttle there is a grinding sound and it seems to take the wheels a while to intitate and then it begins to move uphill. Also I tried holding the wheels still whilst accelerating and the diff does seem to be turning still. So I think on inclines the diff is straining to grip so presumably I need to rebuild this? After about 10mins it couldn't get up the incline of the garden at all and that is presumably because the battery has run down at that point which I guess is to be expected. The other thing I noticed the other day was the reverse didn't seem to be engaging properly when I was driving forward. In my mind this contributed to a feeling of sluggishness. I had a look at the jumpers on the esc and have switched it to just f/r so now when I hit reverse it immediately works and can allow me to brake suddenly and do skids etc. This is how I remember the Kingcab so presumably is the correct jumper setting. So all in all I think the esc has improved things considerably - thank you. Am I right in thinking the next things I should tackle is the diff? Do I need to order all new parts for this and just replace these elements - What's the best approach? And if I'm taking it all apart might it be worth replacing the motor too? Finally, as you ask waterbok, here is the receiver I'm using. I forgot to mention that the battery contacts are badly corroded! But I'm hoping, if there is a signal, this is not something I should worry about at the moment? And here's the Kingcab ...
  3. More dispatches from the newbie front lines: I bought the Quicrun ESC (thanks Waterbok) and fitted it at the weekend. At first I attached the yellow cable on the ESC to the yellow cable on my Kingcab motor, and the other cables to one another. The wheels went forward when I pushed forward on the transmitter however the reverse setting was faster than forward! I therefore switched the cables around and flicked the reverse button on the throttle channel of my transmitter and forward is now faster than reverse. Did I do something crazy? The Quicrun manual does mention that with some transmitters you'll need to set the throttle direction to reverse so I'm assuming that is the case with my old Acoms. The new ESC has improved the battery life which is great. Previously there was a couple of minutes of power and then it very quickly was undriveable (after about 5 mins). Now there doesn't seem to be the intital burst of power. The car seems generally quite slugglish. For instance it struggles with all but the most gentle inclines. However the battery life seems much better. I haven't timed it but it seems to last about 15 mins maybe which strikes me as very good, but possibly a result of the sluggishness. In the intructons it says about setting the throttle range. Could this be why the car is so slow - I just haven't calibrated the ESC properly? The instructions mention various parameters (D/R, EPA etc.) which don't seem to exist on my Acoms. So my main question at this stage is: Is there any way I could set the ESC up to increase the throttle speed i.e. have I done anything wrong, or is the low speed just symptomatic of faults elsewhere?
  4. OK, after all the helpful advice I think I'm going to stick with the Kingcab and start slowly by fitting the Quicrun Wp-1060 esc (thanks Waterbok). I wanted to buy some cable ties. I actually need some for my 1/12 tamtech Frog also. Modelsport UK sell small ones: http://www.modelsport.co.uk/index.php?search=1&search_string=cable+ties&x=0&y=0 Will these be suitable for the 1/12 Frog and the 1/10 Kingcab, or should I buy separate sized ties for both? Thanks, Ben
  5. Funky colours! Have you repainted it now? If so, was it easy to strip the exisiting paint? Thanks for this info about the pinon gears. I didn't realise that the size had an impact on battery time. That's good to know.
  6. Once again, thanks everyone for the contributions - much appreciated. XV Pilot - thanks for taking the time to post those options. There are some great threads there. I particularly enjoyed the vintage shells on new chassis thread. I love that avante body on the DF-03! When I was originally saving for the Kingcab (20 + years ago!) I remember drooling over the Avante. It still looks as good today. If I had the cash, that's what I'd go for. Half tempted to save for a DF-03 and try and cut the avante body to fit like the chap in the aforementioned thread, but it looks quite a fiddly fit - certainly at the front. Maybe I should just save for the Avante 2011, although will probably still be saving in 2021 at which point there'll be none left ... Loads to consider here. I'm going to mull it over but the most cost effective option may well be just to restore the Kingcab bit by bit and learn some skills in the process. Thanks all and I'll keep you posted! Ben
  7. Thanks XVPilot and BromVW. I'd be running the car for fun with my son so it would get bashed about a bit most likely, probably on a mixture of road, paving slabs and a bit of off road too. I'd be after a buggy. I like the vintage Tamiya buggies, hence my interest in the Hotshot, but appreciate that limits my options a bit. I initially said 4wd but am not rigid about that. I guess 4wd would be preferable. As for the tinkering. I like the idea of building it myself but, as you can probably tell from this thread, I'm pretty clueless with the technical side of things, so minimal adjustment once built would be preferable for me.
  8. Just wanted to thank everyone for the advice I received in this thread. I managed to buy the Tamtech Frog bnib for under £70 from a German rc shop, which I was pleased about. Following Blackhole Sun's advice from Greg M's link above (thanks - very useful) I upgraded to oil filled shocks and a sport tuned motor. I finally found a decent battery which lasts 30 mins + so it's running great now. The upshot of all the above is that I can now take the car out and drive with my son's 1/18 car which makes for a great way to spend time with him, plus I get to relive some of my youth with a vintage style tamiya too! Next plan is to get the Hornet body ...
  9. Thanks bromvw. Max - now your earlier post has got me thinking. I hadn't considered that the Kingcab might be collectible, especially one that's not working brilliantly like mine. However, looking at ebay it seems as if, even old and a little beaten up, the Kingcab doesn't fetch a bad price for parts. Maybe it might be more sensible ultimately to sell and invest in a new build, which would give me the 'hands on' satisfaction with less of the frustration and expense of replacing parts. One last question therefore: If I bought a new car I'd probably go for 4wd. What model (that's not too expensive) would folks here recommend? Is the Dark Impact any good? Or the re released Hotshot (although probably a bit over budget for me)? There's certainly a lot to consider here and I appreciate everyone's input - thank you! Once I've made a decision on whether to restore the Kingcab or buy a new rc, I'll post back. Best, Ben
  10. Waterbok - thanks for the photo. That is great - really helpful! Out of curiosity, do you put the Kingcab body on that chassis, or something else? Thanks BromVW for the info about brushed/brushless. Much appreciated. Kontemax, you make some sensible points and thanks for your advice. I have actually bought a ready-to-run Maverick Ion for my son so that base is covered! It then prompted me to buy a Tamtech Frog for myself as I was curious about these smaller cars. I've been amazed at the improved battery life, plus these small scale cars are so fun to drive! Anyway all the above prompted me to dig out my old Kingcab. I guess part of me is curious about getting more 'hands on'. I can't afford to buy a new build-from-scratch project at the moment but thought I might tinker with the Kingcab to see if I can improve its performance. You're right - one fix will probably lead to another problem and these things can turn into money pits. Fitting the ESC might be a reasonably cheap thing to try at first though. And if I get into it, maybe I can restore other parts bit by bit!
  11. Thanks again guys! I checked that esc out. It says it's suitable for 1/16 and 1/18 models, yet isn't the Kingcab 1/10? Would it fit properly? As I said, I'm clueless about all this and about mechanics and electronics in general! If I replaced the msc with an esc, what else would I need to change (bare minimum for it to run)? Would I need a new receiver and transmitter? The receiver is an Acoms 2 channel thing with connections that run from the battery and to the two servos. Would I need new servos? Finally, could anyone kindly explain what 'brushed' means please? That quicrun esc is brushed and I see a lot of talk about brushed vs brushless motors. Just wondering what that means and whether I'd need a compatible motor with that esc. Thanks for your help and patience folks!
  12. And yes it does have the old msc. Out if curiosity, how much are esc's and is there a particular type people would recommend?
  13. Hi thanks all for the info. I'm really a newbie to all this so a lot to digest here but useful. I think I will try charging/discharging the battery a few more times to see if it picks up. I should have said that I really don't want to invest a lot in this car - was just hoping to get it going for 15 mins or so for the kids to play with. The 'restoring' part of the title was a bit misleading although was curious if a new motor (I.e minimal investment) might spruce things up. Sounds like I'd be better off replacing quite a bit in reality but I will mull this info over (certainly kontemax's post) and may be back with further questions!
