Monster Beetle Build / Restore - Now with Re-Re parts!

Recommended Posts

After reading through the various Monster Beetle resto threads on here I decided to get myself one. Sorted a nice original car from lentner3 and it arrived today.

It was already dis-assembled when I got it so i've spent this evening working out what bits I need and what needs replacing.

Just a quick pic to kick off the resto thread...

I've tracked down most of what I need, only thing I can't find is the elusive E-Parts tree (rear bumper gubins), if anyone has one they want to part with drop me a line :)

Not sure on a timescale on this, I got back into this as a cheap alternative while I put my 1:1 stuff on hold for a while so I need to fight the urge to splash out all at once. Hoping to sort a body next month though.

Quick update..

Got my bearings form RCbearings.com yesterday - very quick delivery.

I've tracked down a complete E-Parts and bought it, why is the most expensive piece B):P

Im hoping to get some time on Sunday to clean it all up and get the chassis built up.

I've never done any spaceframe builds before so its all new to me

Done some part hunting through my spares today and managed to create a servo saver ! Even better is red so suits it well

Pulled the ESC out of my hornet and took the bug out in the garden, was great fun, been years since I ran any of my cars other than the Hornet, the Beetle stays planted and it goes round corners :D

Hopefully in the next fortnight it will have a bodyshell and i'll fit my BZ after a few more test runs with the silvercan B)

Looks awesome! I'm glad it has a good home, really cleaned up well and looks like new.

Really nice chassis to drive even as stock so I'm sure you'll have loads of fun when you put a bit more power through it.

Gave the battery a quick charge and took it out for another run

Couple of snaps all built up (excuse the poor fitting radio gear, its only temp stuff).

Added the resistor as I like the look of it.

That looks really good - nice resto - just a couple of things if you dont have a servo cover make sure you use somat to brace the front strut mount or you'll find it will break and also flex a lot (no good when body on)

As for the red - Tamiya is dear at mo as withdrawn some time ago and only minimal stock about - If your not too cirtical just use automotive spray but make sure you use plastic primer and be patient as not as easy to get a shine like the tamiya stuff.

I'd personally not put a bigger motor in unless you mod the diff gears otherwise it will just shred em. but your car your choice :-)

Keep up the good work and welcome to the ORV club :-)

Thanks for the tip on the servo plate, if you talking about the metal attachment that goes underneath the chassis then i've got it but it needs bending back into shape, i'll do that before the next run :)

I've just ordered my decals from TamiyaClub so I should have then by the weekend, haven't made a decision on the paint yet, anyone tried Humbrol Paint....

Got my decals for this now.

Still stuck on what to do for paint though, I haven't painted a body for a long time so i'd like to stick to model paint rather than normal automotive stuff as I imagine I am likely to get a better finish due to my lack of skills lol

Tamiya TS paints are silly expensive on ebay though
