Mad Fighter wheel and body options

Recommended Posts

Looks like this seller has Mad Fighter kits for sale for £34

No wheels or body or electronics but could be a good build if I can find cheap other bits.

What are the wheel options for the MaD Fighter and is it a worthwhile kit to build? I have a Hornet at the moment.

Same chassis as the Madbull, hex rear wheels with bearing front wheels so can fit anything like DT02, WW2 etc wheels. Very tough and rugged. Good fun to through around and parts are plentiful.

The Mad Fighter is very similar to the Hornet, just more up to date and can be fitted with better after market parts - chiefly oil filled dampers front and back.

The body choices are limited to the Mad Fighter, Mad Bull and Rookie Rabbit/Fighter Buggy types. You could use a Bear Hawk body, but would have to hack one or two holes in it - up front to make way for the Mad fighter's steering bellcrank, and maybe at the rear to clear the dampers. All these bodies are hard ABS types.

Wheels and tires are easy enough. Up front you could use any 2WD buggy wheel that runs on two 1150 size bearings, and the rears use 12mm hex hubs on a splined driveshafts. Any buggy, or monster wheel that need 12mm hubs should work.

A fun buggy to drive, but only slightly better than a Hornet in terms of overall performance.

I might get one and decide on a body and wheels later. The hornet now has a 80t motor for my 5 year old to master so I need a toy. I have a spare esc so just need radio gear.

The Dt-01 02 and 03 options seem to be about the same sort of price but a Madbull might suit me best overall. Would be nice to just swap wheels for different roles though.

One thing to consider is the rounded battery compartment. You may have problems fitting hardcase lipos in there.

Well since he does combined postage I decided to order two. It's like getting the second one half price. I will build one up and see, if not then both will get built and stuck back on EBay.

GBP34.00 (incl. shipping to the UK) without ESC, body, tires and wheels isn't particularly cheap. Tamico's regular price (without ESC) is EUR39.99. Shipping cost to the UK is EUR13.90.

For those interested in getting the smoke clear gearbox and coloured gears, it should be noted though that they have been replaced with regular black gearbox and white gears in more recent production, so both the auction illustration and pic used by Tamico are very likely inaccurate on this point.

Tamico have English-speaking sales personnel. I got a phonecall a while back and was confused at first as to who it was! Very helpful and highly recommend them.

I had a look on their site and ordered some wheels and Mad Bull bodies, and a Mud blaster II (£78 sounded like a bargain to me )

I need a second set of radio gear now and I am sorted, and in great trouble, for the future.

Well part of my order has turned up.

The two chassis are delayed, they only had one so I tried to cancel. The offered me a fully built shop demo with body instead so we will se what turns up at the end of the week.

If it's been assembled by Germans then there will be no need to strip it down and rebuild it! It will be ultra reliable!

I am sure. But I will still strip and check it is ball raced throughout.

Need two sets of cheap but fantastic oil shocks now.

DT01 chassis, Mad Bull shells and Carson wheel sets? Looks like you have the same plan as I had:

Flipper%20004_zpscxf9z1yv.jpg

As for cheap but fantastic oil shocks, the Ansmann/Absima ones would fit the bill. They are well-machined and very affordable. The stock shaft seals are a bit rubbish, and the pistons aren't always trimmed of their moulding flash, but if you strip them down, trim the flash, then rebuild them with Tamiya shaft seals, they provide many miles of smooth and leak-free running.

Doh, and I thought I was being a pioneer!

I might do a full Mad Bull yet but thought the Carson wheels were. Good compromise between the fighter and bull. Might have to call it the Bull Fighter :-)

Since I stop by at Tamico from time to time, I can hereby confirm that their display models are usually very carefully assembled and painted. But as pointed out, you better check for ball bearings. :) Those Absima/Ansmann dampers look nice, but are the supplied spring appropriate for the DT-01? Since it needs exceptionally soft springs (especially at the rear) and light damper oil.

Please let us know how your build goes on.

I usually find the Ansmann/Absima springs to be a bit on the soft side for most models, but for the DT01 they seem just fine. As for oil, after you have cleaned up the moulding flash and upgraded the shaft seals, you can load them with the oil of your choice. I found Associated 20w worked well for me.

Would these be the type you are talking about?

RC shocks seem to cost more than my real car shocks in a lot of cases

No, don't buy those! Although sold as being suitable for the Mad Bull, they are not supplied with the right fixings to attach them to the car, neither are said fixings readily available separately. People who have bought those shocks have had to bodge the attachment, and I don't know of anyone who has been completely satisfied with the results.

I used Ansmann shocks, but Ansmann products are now being sold by Team C and Absima amongst others. These are the Absima-branded versions of the ones I used on mine:

Front

Rear

http://www.modelsport.co.uk/absima-alu-dampers-95mm-1-10-2-/rc-car-products/369645

These are sold with screw-through ball ends fitted, and are easily mounted to the car using 3mm screws.

As pointed out, the DT-01 really needs those ball collars or ball end damper mounts, otherwise the rear suspension won't function as desired due to the angle of the dampers.

From what I know, there are at least three different types of Absima/Ansmann dampers:

1. The CVA knockoffs (all black plastic)

2. The silver anodised type

3. The black anodised type.

I wouldn't be surprised if they all come with different spring rates as well.

I can't speak for the CVA knockoffs having never tried them, but having used both the silver Ansmanns and black Absimas on a number of projects, I can confirm that they are mechanically identical, including the springs. The only difference is the colour.

Many thanks. £20 on a £28 chassis is a killer. Might just have to do one to start with.

Need a set for my WT-01 as well :-( this hobby will bankrupt me.

When you get the shocks for your WT-01, might I recommend also getting the GPM alloy extended/reinforced shock towers? They allow the fitment of longer shocks with more travel, and relieve stress from the stock plastic shock towers, meaning they are less likely to suffer damage in heavy landings.

Fusion Hobbies sell them locally, or if you are okay with the delays and risks associated with ordering from the East, Asiatees have them a bit cheaper.
