Question Re: Alternate Wheels for Striker Project

Recommended Posts

I was looking at some JConcept wheels for a RC10 (vintage) and was wondering if they are a simple fit to a Striker. They are 1.9 front and 1.7 rear which I believe is the correct measurement. Does the stock Striker hub fit the RC10 wheel? I believe that both the RC10 and Striker have the four pin hub. If it isn't a direct bolt on, does the CRP hub adapter (CRP 4121) do the trick?

Thanks,

Mark

Hi, the Striker wheels are the same of the Falcon and the Grasshopper II.

I remember they are the same diameter.

The rear wheel diameter is the same of the Thundershot and I believe it is 1.9.

The front wheel diameter is the same of Astute, Bear Hawk and Madcap that is 1.9.

Hi Kontemax,

Thanks for your input. I guess I wasn't as clear as I should have been. Due to the difficulty in finding Striker Wheels (in white) especially for the front, I am looking at new wheel options. My research indicated that the Striker and RC10 had the same sized wheels. I already have front and rear tires which is why I want to stay the stock size. I am 99% positive that the rears are not 1.9 and are in fact 1.7. The fronts I agree are 1.9. CRP made a adapter so you could mount fox, wild one, etc. wheels on a Striker or mount Tamiya wheels on a RC10. I will keep up the search!

Thanks,

Mark

Mark,

If you are referring to the re-re RC10, then the rear wheels are pin drive.. The RC10 also uses imperial bearings, so you will need to do some mods to the front wheels to accept the metric bearings that the Striker uses..

Have you looked at using more modern 2.2 inch ? wheels and tyres say from the DT series of buggies?

I just measured the rear wheels and they are 1.9 like the front ones.

Fox and Wild One front wheels are 2 or more (2.2).

Hope you will find what you are searching for.

I've recently "tidied up" a Striker and because the rear tyres were shot (and unavailable) I went looking for an alternative wheel in my toolbox.

I found some pin drive 2.2 inch wheels that fitted perfectly once the standard plastic 4 pin adaptor was removed.

These wheels are Schumacher "Revlite".

Can you elaborate on what you mean by pin drive? I tried looking up the wheels and they mention they are 12mm hex.

Pin drive means it's just the axle and pin with no hub. the wheel will have a slot that the pin rests in.

Indeed. Imagine a normal hex-drive wheel with the hex permanently stuck in it. That is a pin-drive wheel.

If it is of any help, you can just throw a set of re re Fox wheels onto the striker front and rear. The one major factor in the FRONT wheels on the older buggies is simply the bearing size ID, they were 5mm to allow the axle shaft of 5mm to insert into them. On an RC10, they used SAE measurements and so the 5mm standard inner diameter bearings that Tamiya uses, won't interface with an RC10 axle shaft and conversely, an RC10 wheel made to accept flanged SAE measured bearings won't allow the 5mm axle from a Tamiya to fit. I ran into a small problem like that on my original MadCap:

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=25168&sid=2640

The orange wheels were made by Trinity and were a mix of RC10 fronts and I think Kyosho rears since they used the 12mm hex mount which at the time was standard for Kyosho, but new territory for Tamiya back then.

Now, onto "modern" wheels. It should be safe to say that ANY modern 2wd buggy wheel from Tamiya would fit the Striker front axlses provided they are not too wide to be able to tighten the wheel nut. The rear wheels are going to be the parts you will have to play with and or measure more of the stub axle length so you can get a wheel that works. If your hub parts are not cracked(the part that looks like a disc with 4 round divots(holes)) and you want a wheel that interfaces directly with that hub, the Wild One and Fox are the standard 2 inch wheel diamter size and color of wheel is the only difference where the WO is white plastic and the Fox is gold plated. The RE RE of both of the cars has made the supply of wheels and tires very affordable and you can get other tires from Proline any day of the week in the same sizes I beleive, but I haven't shopped for modern rubber in soo long thanks to the kit breakers out on eBay, I just keep buying the old wheels and tires to store in my spares.

That is my two cents worth as if you want another reference, Tamiya themselves uprated the wheel/tire combo on the Grasshopper 2 which originally came with the same wheels/tires as the Striker, then they offered a SUPER G version which brought out day glo green wheels molded on the same molds as the WildOne/Fox and Tamiya put them in the box of the Super G Grasshopper 2 in lieu of the original oddball sized wheels/tires.

Good luck with building one of the more controversial cars of the first 100 kits by Tamiya, it has its followers and its haters.
