Hey guys, so I never thought I would run across something of the original bf/mb family until an oppurtunity arose to buy a mint grasshopper for a good price. I happened to notice a very very cool Subaru Brat sitting on what looked like a Monster Beetle/Blackfoot Frame, I asked the guy if it was for sale, we worked out a deal and well, im the new owner of a suuuuper fresh Mud Blaster.

I dont think this thing was ran til I took it out. The body was covered in an inch of dust but a good wipe and run cleared her right off lol

So i've been doing a bit of reading, and soul searching when it comes to this truck. Although its probably better suited to a shelf queen with how nice it is, I love actually messing around with these little things, and after driving stuff like a Lunchbox and a very floppy Sand Scorcher, this thing is a blast!

What I really want to know, is what should I be looking for for upgrading the rear end. I have been reading that the hex shafts or whatever are prone to failure, and than perhaps a new modern gear set would be a good idea for upgrading the power (thinking about a 20t). I will probably order a set of bearings aswell, but it would be nice to know exactly what I should be looking for to solve the rear end failures.

As far as I know, all the frog rere internals should work but I havent ever seen any hard evidence to back that up. I would buy a complete rear end parts bag for the new monster beetle but it seems to be hit or miss with finding them right now.

PS, im sorry to the collectors about it being too nice to bash but... its much more fun to play with than staring at it on a mantle... :P

Alright, I did a quick browse through the rere thread, looks like the idea I had of trimming an extra set of diff plates down, and running slightly longer hardware will work alright.

So say if I ordered this (2015 rere), and a spare set of side plates (and modded them of course) that should make it fairly stout for 20t bashing?

Okay, after doing a bit more research I think GregM is right about the OldFrogShot mod. I will order a rere rear end (with the new shafts) and do the mod. Winter is right around the corner here so if it stands up to winter thrashing of -20c or lower temps im sure it can withstand most everything. It does strike me as odd though that Tamiya never really found a solution for the diff issue. Oh well, now I have to patiently wait for 9-14 days lol

I run a complete Thorp dirt burners rear, gear and ball diff in my vintage Monster Beetle with a hpi 15 turn motor with no problems. You can find them on ebay as complete sets or you can piece then together out of parts, but it will cost either way.

You're dead right on both counts ! I just bought a heap of Egress 2013 parts and upgraded my original Egress. I'll update it in my showroom sometime, it's amazingly better so just no need to spend the money.

We missed out on a Perth TC run this year , Not many of us left . Have not seen the others on here .

Would like to have an Egress run etc , But would like to maybe do a beach type run ?.

Thanks for the comments and likes on the pic lol

Okay so I got my new rear end in the other night from a 2015 MB. Definitely have some binding on the one side so I will have to take out an o ring or run a spacer. I am partially tempted to run double plates on the trans housing but I think I will just do the oldfrogshot mod assuming I can track down hardware. Its been a bit of a bummer week for rc stuff as the new (to me) SC10 I just bought popped the Tekin RS Pro speed controller, aswell as my Lunchbox is seemingly unable to wheelie anymore even with a 15t. Sigh... So hopefully I can get this sorted over the weekend and get it playing in the mud and snow! I will try to get some more beauty shots before this thing gets too beat up
