Dynamite glow plug quick charger

Recommended Posts

I've got a Dynamite 'ni charger' it is a 12v 20 minute quick charger and it just says 'ni charger' on the pack - not specifying Ni-Cad or Ni-Hm , anybody know if it is universal or just Ni-Cad or Ni-Hm

cheers

If its a egg-timer type ( fixed time / no sensed charge ), then its probably Ni-Cad. I guess it depends on whether you want your cells hard boilled or soft and runny??? Have you got the Glow Plug heater??? Can you unscrew the metal bit where the cell lives and check whats inside?? Ni-Cad or NimH?? What size cell is it?? The first generation, self contained-clip on type ( from memory - dont quote me, but they didnt keep the plug glowing red for very long ) were NI-Cad "D" cells.

Hi OTC , thanks for the reply . The charger is basic - a 20min charge, then switches to trickle charge . The glow heater I have is a nimh 1800 cell HPI clip-on handheld common type heater with a slow charger

Dont quote me, but it was explained to me that the difference between a charge / discharge characteristics of NiCad and Nimh is that a Nimh has a flatter discharge curve. The physics / chemical theory of the cells is similar, I dont think your charger will mind. Rule of thumb. For a charger without delta peak logic, the theoretical current ( amps ) required is close to:-

Charge Required ( flat battery ) = Cell Capacity 1800mAh = 1 amp for 1.8 Hours or 5.4 Amps for 20 mins.

Any doubt get a couple of small aligator clips ( insulate the one you insert into the plug heater tube ) and getto rig the cell to your combination Nimh / Lipo / LiFe charger, set it to Nimh. Sometime after……………….. glow plug white hot, easy start, lots of fun then something breaks., many naughty words, and resolution to convert all nitro models to brushless!!!!!
