How old to be considered "vintage"?

Recommended Posts

I noticed that the Vintage section of these forums is for vehicles 58001 to 58150. Is this the general rule that 58151 isn't considered a vintage model by most? If so do you think that will change as time goes by? I see that 58151 is a FF-01 chassis while 58150 is a TA02 chassis. Is it this that makes the 58150 "vintage"?

For Tamiyaclub, I believe the 150 was just a 'convenient' cutoff point - The line had to be drawn somewhere.

Tamiya101, for instance, went for the first 100 + the Mountaineer (IIRC)

Looking through this thread; http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6957&hl=cutoff#entry50428 there was a thread titled something like 'Why 150' but I can't find it

It's totally subjective, same as 'nice' and 'ugly'

One definition of vintage is The time that something of quality was produced
Possible exceptions (unless you like 'em)
58061: Striker
58071: Sonic Fighter

You only have to look at any other 'vintage' collections to see the scope is pretty wide.

After 150, things were pretty 'plasticky' until the Juggernaut, but 100-150 weren't all stunners by any means (IMO)

Rule of thumb , 25 old years = vintage ?

I agree with this also..

I don't understand how just the first 100 or 150 kits could be considered vintage, and then have that never change??

IMO, each year more and more kits should be considered vintage when they have their 25th birthday..

Most Vintage races have a vehicle requirement of being made pre 1990...

None of these words really have an exact meaning, they're more descriptive/emotive rather than precise terms.

Older than 25 years is pretty exact, whereas classic is down to interpretation.

An 8 year old's interpretation of a classic cartoon is probably different to a 50 year old's

Is vintage older than classic?

Those using the terms should quantify them (as TC has by declaring 1-150) - as Backlash has said "Most Vintage races have a vehicle requirement of being made pre 1990"

Why is 'vintage' even used if pre-1990 is the criteria?

To me, vintage is a measure of age, classic is a measure of importance, related to how representative a given model is of its type or category.

Simply put, an old model is not necessary a classic, and a classic is not necessarily old.

For me it's 20 years, For any toy to last 20 years is remarkable.

At the end of the day, The guys with the older toys will want only the older toys to be vintage,

and the guys with the newer toys would like the their toys included in the vintage class.

I think for any toys to even last ten years after production is pretty good.

For me, if it was released before I discovered girls and alcohol it's vintage.

Sounds about right to me.

Vintage for the vintage motorcycle club is 25 years but a classic is just something iconic, even in its own time.

Deffo yes on the Cortina , I had a few of the MK2's & MK 4 / 5's back in the day - loved 'em - the good ol' Dagenham Dustbins !! :) , real vintage classics - or classic vintages - depending on your point of view

I wonder if in 20 years time people will be talking about TL01's and TT01's as vintage models or will these be forgotten about like the Vauxhall Cavalier?

now mk1.escort, v6 Capri, v8 rover, e type jag, there are classics in time and then there are the guys that are trying to keep up. I would never put a original in the box hot shot next to an original in the box radio shack car from the same era..... But some would..... It all lies in the eye of the beholder..... A top of the line "trotters international traders van" next to a mint condition Morris minor deliver van. Different type of quality Rodney!!!

I'm guessing by the talk of Cortinas etc... there are a few TC'ers who fall into the vintage category - that would be anyone born before Tamiya released their 1st R/C kit :D

If you like dodgy British 1970's "classics" you will love this site!

In the UK once a real car is 25 years old it can be taxed and insured as a "classic" regardless of quality. I have a 1989 BMW E30 that just passed this milestone and my insurance has just plummeted.

Just had its MOT and 128,000 mile service... £43 all in. Got to love 1980's style and German engineering.

Not many of them left with the rear arches still intact

My bike insurance is dirt cheap, just over £100 for three bikes. Two vintage and one "classic"
