Charger breakdown error

Recommended Posts

This weekend I was charging up some lipos to take the Vorza out for a run. The first 3s pack charged fine, but a few seconds into charging the second, the charger beeped and showed "breakdown" on screen.

I thought it might be the pack, but searches about the error online indicate that it might be the charger itself. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Are the battery leads fixed into the packs or are they removable? If they are removable try one of the leads from the 1st pack and see if thats works.

A few weeks ago with my charger I kept getting the error "cell voltage too high" around 4-5 seconds into a charge and it just wouldn't charge , I eventually found online that the cable must have been damaged (looked fine) so I plugged in a new battery cable and charged perfectly after that.

Although, it could just be that your charger has failed.

Fixed cables, so no chance of swapping them out to test. Charger is likely a cheapo Chinese knock off. I bought it at my LHS a couple years back but the last time I ran a search for the name printed on it (not at home to check so I don't remember the name) nothing came up.

Gonna try charging a NiCd I have kicking around to test.

Power cycle it off/on, does fault clear itself?

Probably a dry solder joint, could try reflowing the board.

Fault clears itself, and it charges the NiCd no problem. All signs are pointing to the pack currently. I'll see if it charges one of my 2s packs.

AAAAAAAARGH!

Just picked up a new pack (not cheap) and tried to do a balance charge on the first charge, and got "Battery Vol Err Cell connect" Posting here so I don't take an axe to it and start a fire. Jesus Christ I just want to run my flippin' buggy without spending hundreds of dollars to find another lipo that will just accept the charge.

Turned out it was the charger after all. I did some googling today and managed to find this manual for a charger using the same software as my Ranktop. Starting on page 29 it gives reasons for the error messages and neither of them is batt related.

I picked up another charger today and it seems to be balancing fine as we speak (cells hovering at around 4.20v)
