Kyosho Javelin

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I recently acquired a Javelin in a box and I'm trying to gauge interest in this model. I'm a Tamiya guy and haven't messed around much with Kyosho but this looks pretty complete, although it is partially disassembled. Clearly, there is some interest as this thread exists, but ... are these collectable? Runners? Nostalgia?

Wondering if this came RTR as it has a Kyosho 75 mhz AM radio, receiver, 2x servos and a Kyosho charger? All of a period and it looks original circa 1986 from the dates I can see.

Is there any interest still out there for these buggies?? I only saw two on fleabay and they were both pristine but with high prices ($400 & $1700). Not sure if anyone is going to buy those, otherwise I saw very little to compare to. I've not seen anyone in my area with one of these - ever, so I'm not sure if they are still desirable or not.

Any thoughts? Thanks for any responses!

T.

Nah these are worthless, you can send it to me... :D

Seriously they are extremely desirable, Kyosho's 4WD holy grail. Wish I had one but they are so expensive. If you are planning on selling it you better do it soon as Kyosho is re-releasing their classic buggies and I wouldnt be surprised if the Javelin is on the list. The hardest to find parts are the rollcage pièces, is yours complete and in good condtion?

They were kits like most other RCs in the 80s. They are nearly identical to the Kyosho Optima except the for the body. If I had one I wouldnt run it especially if its in good/excellent condition. I have a Turbo Optima runner which is more common than the Javelin.

I will post some pics. It seems to be in pretty good condition. I see one nerf bar with the end missing, one missing drive hex and the front shock collars are cracked (but there are other aluminum shocks - with the stock red bottom eyelets - on it at the moment.) Everything looks pretty well treated and even the tires are good. Pretty sure this one will be sold on since it isn't my cup of tea.

Looks like a nice example. You should be able to make some money off it, depending on how much you paid. It's probably not going to be a shelf-queen without some parts being replaced, but it would make a great shined-up light runner. Front shocks are Kyosho Gold shocks, BTW. Standard on the Turbo Optima and Optima MId, and are excellent shocks.

Back in the 80s, the Javelin was $10 more than the Optima, so everyone bought an Optima instead, unless they really wanted the rollcage. Now, Optimas aren't that hard to find, and repro bodies are easily available, but Javelin rollcages (especially the aftermarket optional green and yellow ones) are prized, because they're rare, and rollcages are cool.

Oh, and if you think Tamiya motor pinions are bad, crack open the gearbox on that and look at the final drive pinion inside. Makes Tamiya gears look heavy-duty by comparison... luckily the modern 5mm bore steel pinions can be adapted.

EDIT: also, just so you know, your upper chain guide is installed upside-down...

Cool, it is nice to learn something about this model. The chain is not hooked up and the guard is just laying there. I thought about totally disassembling and putting it back to running condition, but since I don't have the manual and I don't really know much about chain driven Kyosho buggies it will probably get sold on as a project. Good to know that it has some value. :)

Google is your friend

Get it stripped and lightly restored and your returns will be better. I have to say the more I look at vintage Kyosho stuff the more I want one.

Nice!! The manual is a big help to see what is there and what is missing and maybe assemble it if time allows.

Any suggestions for a fair ball park price to ask for something like this? I know, you could just put it on fleabay and see what you get for it but I'd rather see if I can sell it here first to someone who will appreciate it, plus I've had nothing but great experiences with sales and trades here.

Where are you located?
