Pintopower 1456 Posted December 16, 2014 I always thought the stock wing on the hornet was a tad on the boring side. Then one day I saw some aluminum wing that was made for a custom Hornet and I knew what had to be done! This is 3D printed in a flexible and durable plastic. This is a direct bolt on replacement to the Hornet shell with no modifications done to the shell. This will require a polystyrene primer and paint for a showroom finish. A number of colors are available for this as well as a "clear" option but note that due to the manufacturing process, the clear may have a side where it is translucent due to the orientation that it was printed. Clear is not recommended if you are planning on painting this like a lexan shell; it will not work as you imagine. White polished is the most recommended version as it accepts paint fantastic and will make the best base for a primer. Please let me know if you have any questions on this wing. Champ85 609 Posted December 18, 2014 I like that wing a lot. And not just for a Hornet!
Toykid 596 Posted December 18, 2014 Great idea Alberto. Can you give us more info on the primer you mentioned for the white strong & flexible material?
Pintopower 1456 Posted December 20, 2014 Great idea Alberto. Can you give us more info on the primer you mentioned for the white strong & flexible material? Hey James, As I am sure you know, adding color to this plastic is easy as pie. Making it look glossy on the other hand.... What I did on the hood of my Hornet project was attempt to sand it down to a smoother finish and then use a few coats of Tamiya primer and then sanded it smooth. Again, i failed. It was still too rough. I bought some high-build surface primer at Kragen auto parts (or whatever they call it now) and layed down a few coats. This was not on the wing (its been cold and rainy here) but rather a scrap printed part. After 2 coats it color sanded nicely! light layer of paint and some clear, and I have to say that it looks good. I didn't spend too much time on it as it was a test but the high build primer was key. I seem to recall that Tamiya makes something like this also but did not investigate as much as I should have. I was too enamored with the wing as I was designing it. I hope this helps and as soon as I have some dry time I will paint this one up. Here was where I got my idea as as to not take all the credit:
