Thundershot / Dragon series one way roller

Recommended Posts

Just recently acquired a one way roller kit (53200) from a fellow TC member, and have managed to fit it into a thundershot diff casing, so thought I would share how it is done. (The thundershot series are not listed as compatible for this one way, but it can be easily made to fit.

The only modification required is to remove the plastic from the area indicated so that there is a square slot. This must be done for all 3 prong positions. The plastic bearing mount then drops nicely into the the diff gear, so that the protruding plastic prongs are touching the plastic of the gear.

The housing can then be reassembled, complete with the plastic washers provided in the one way unit to ensure the splined adapters do not separate. The whole lot can then be reassembled into the car. The only other mod I would consider doing is to hold the drive cups into the gearbox casings with original hotshot circlips.

This one way probably is not going to end up in my thundershot as I run it with a 8.5T eZrun and need 4 wheel braking (I've got a spool in the front instead). It might end up in my CC-01 Pajero. Having looked at the one way kit and taken some measurements from it, I think it is feasible to use components from it to make a one way unit for a hotshot :), which should go a long way to eliminating the chronic understeer of the hotshot. The thundershot diff gear has the same number of teeth as the hotshot diff gear, so it's just a matter of making a narrower cover for the side of the diff to hold the one way bearing, and turn down the ends of the spline adapters to the width of the hotshot gearbox. Hopefully be able to try this sometime in the new year.

Vintage racers form an orderly queue .... :)

What's the benefit of a one-way lock?

For me, it prevents one front wheel from spinning out the power during brushless take off (It effectively acts like a locked diff under power), and as there is no loss of traction from the front wheels, it helps to stop the rears spinning as well. Also, it apparently turn in under power. The disadvantage is you only get 2wd in reverse, and braking is only effective on the rear axle.

Nice idea but we need better pictures...

Max

I'll see what I can do, but it means dismantling the front end of the car again .........

the mod looks fairly straight forward , i dont have a thundershot infront of me yet but i have a small question in regards to the original diff housing , do you still you use the cup side of the housing to hold it together or is it held together by pressure? i was looking over my thundershot manual and it seems to me it would be incased inside the housing , can you confirm this?.

i have used one ways in several on road and a couple off roaders and like the way it helps with understeer, when i get my thundershot i would like to use this mod.

Yes, you do need to use the cup side to hold it all toegether
