Cheap hobbyking electronics?

Recommended Posts

Does anybody have any experience of the cheap hobbyking electronics? I just ordered some parts for my TA01 cosworth project that I will be starting soon (car will be a cheap basher not a shelf queen). I ordered a HK sport tuned motor, HK ESC, 21T pinion and some battery connectors. The whole lot came to just £19 delivered.

Am I going to be disappointing with these items or are they a genuine bargain? How does the HK Sport Tuned motor compare to the proper Tamiya one?

The only bits I still need for this project are a motor mount and plate which should be easy enough to find.

I have been impressed with the lipos I have used from them. Zippy and Turnigy.

I also had a HobbyKings own 150a ESC for my hyper 7 which was really good, (until I put the car in the canal) I am going to order another one.

The 45A ESC has been discussed in this subforum before.

The 48P pinion will only mesh with 48P spurs. It will not mesh with 0.6mod spur gears (most Tamiya touring cars), even if they look similar.

The motor is a generic OEM design used by many different brands (Ansmann, Absima, Etronix, etc.). You get what you pay for. They are decent in the high turn versions (27 turns and higher), e.g. for crawlers and similar vehicles.

The XT connectors are not genuine Deans connectors.

Well at £4 for a motor you have little to lose !

It should be faster thana silver can, but perhaps not up with the very best tuned stock motors. Tamiya own Sport Tuned motor is ca £6 from Banzihobby for future reference- 2 motors delivered to UK is ca £17.

The ESC work fine - there are a few people on the forum with experience of them - I've had two of them but one had limited use, and the other was added to a new built car for resale, so I'm not the best to comment on longevity.

Pinion can't be any worse than Tamiyas butter soft alloy ones, but its not a 48dp one you want for a TA01

Generally Hobbyking connectors are decent quality - I personnaly use the 4 / 5mm bullet items and the XT60 plugs (thats what most of their batteries come equipped with).

I have one of the HobbyKing 45A Brushed ESC's in one of my Tamiya 1/14 trucks, and from the limited testing that I have done (driving it around my house) , it seems to work just fine.. I found that the power delivery of the HobbyKing ESC was smoother than the TEU-101BK with the 55turn motor I'm using..

I have also used the ":T" (Deans) connectors, and they seem to work just as good as any of the "cheapie" T or Deans copies out there.. Just be aware that like most of the cheap copy Deans, they are not as tolerant to high temps, and can be easily melted when soldering to them..

I have not tried one of the HobbyKing "Sports Tuned" motors, but I might get one with my next order to try.. For the price, how could you go wrong?

The pinion you have listed is a 48 DP, so its not compatible with Tamiya cars that use 0.6 module gears like the M01 to M06 Mini, and TL01 etc...

As for the rest of their gear..

I have been using some of the Turnigy Lipo's for a few months now and love them.. I will be buying more when my old batteries need replacing..

I bought a Turnigy 9X radio to use with my Tamiya 1/14 trucks, and I cannot fault it except it being designed for planes..

I have friends with the Turnigy/Flysky GTB3 radios and love them..

I have a 45A ESC too and installed it in a TT01 with a 19T brushed motor - shouldn't have been much of a strain. On 2S Lipo it was glitchier than a glitchy thing and virtually impossible to drive though - so it gets a thumbs-down from me. Might be OK in something slower on NiMH?

The HobbyWing stuff however, that seems to be pretty good value for money...

19T motor is probably pushing it a bit for a 45A ESC ?

...(until I put the car in the canal)...

Forum quote of the week

I like their lipos and the XT60 connectors (not Deans or really Deans copies as they have different connectors) they use are good, use them on all my motor/esc/battery connections.

The brushed motor looks good value too.

I thought I had done my research and ordered the correct pinion. Can anybody link me to the correct pinion please?

All my newly purchased Lipos and nimh are from Hobbyking. Great value and quality! I will never get my batteries from a local hobby shop again as i can get them for a fraction of their cost at HK.

I use a Hobbyking SCT 120A ESC and the 550 sized motor in my Traxxas Slash 4x4. no complaints!

I have a few of the 45A in various Tamiyas and they perform well. Can get a little warm, but bargain for the price.

I haven't tried the HK Sports Tuned motor, but will give it a try!

If you get a product that doesn't work properly, their customer service sucks! I won't be buying from them again.
