Got myself a vintage holiday buggy

Recommended Posts

Well I don't actually have my hands on it yet but I won an auction on eBay for one. There were only two photos and not much in the way of a description so I don't know if I have got a bargain or not yet (time will tell). What I do know is it had the msc and motor, steering servo, all wheels and tyres and the shell has both jerry cans and all spotlights intact.

Here are the pics that were in the ebay listing.

I have 2 :P along with a brand new bodyshell set :)

Making one good one out of the 2 and modernising (without cutting it about) with an ESC and new Radio gear....going to use it :)

If you got the same route just keep all the bits

I plan on keeping it vintage and refurbishing it the best I can. I think the front suspension mounts have been repaired at some stage but will know more once it arrives (hopefully tomorrow or Thursday).

One of my fav Tamiyas along with the Sand Rover . Those supension mounts have been repaired , but you can tidy them up and maybe fit a brace across the 2 to strengthen it all up - it helps a lot .

It's here!

It is very dirty but looks complete and even came with a bag of spares. It needs a couple of repairs on the body. The roof support has came away from the bonnet on both sides and there is a crack above one of the rear wheel arches. Any advice on how to repair this?

What with me being impatient, I found a technique to repair the damage to the body shell. I used a soldering iron to melt the plastic and fuse it back together. I found a video on you tube detailing how to do it. I did this repair on the inside of the shell so it isn't so noticeable from from the outside. The shell is now solid and can be picked up / handled without fear of damage. It looks like a previous owner had tried this technique before at some point but failed because the shell is a bit distorted above the rear wing. I will sand this flat then try to polish the shine back into it. If this doesnt work I may need to look into repainting it.

Does anybody know the best colour match to keep the box art colour? I have read that, halfords plastic primer sticks to the chassis then automotive paint can be used.

Good to hear you've been successful with your repair. Polyethylene is nearly impossible to paint with traditional methods, since it repels primer and paint. There are special methods were you need to apply heat to the surface, to alter the chemical structure for better adhesion.

That is how we fix motorcycle panels, we use cable ties as filler rods if that helps

I used Halfords plastic primer then Peugeot Indigo Blue , with plasticote enamel blue lagoon blue for the roof , it just about matches the decal blue on the fenders .

If you click on my 'Tamiya showroom' logo below you can visit my showroom and see the HB there

Your buggy looks great Kev, I am now going to be using this at a reference for mine. I was reluctant to sand and paint the body as I was unsure how good re pro decals would be but yours looks excellent.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the kind words . I don't run this car as it is a shelfer , so how the paint would hold up after a run is another thing , but after all this time the paint is still perfect . The decals came from Stickerbod many years back , they are great

I got the chassis stripped and cleaned today after work. It is in pretty good nick but would benefit from a sanding and a lick of paint. I am going to a wedding tomorrow then will be busy with the family over the Easter weekend so probably won't progress this till next week.

I was surprised at just how heavy duty the drive train is, certainly made out of stronger stuff that today's buggies.

I have successfully painted an old HB shell with Halfords car paint...you can use the normal primer or the specific plastic primer both work well.

Make sure you key the surfaces to be painted well I with a fine scotchbrite pad or some 1500 grit wet and dry.

I managed to find time to make a better repair to the shock mounts on the chassis. I have also given it a couple of coats of black paint, cleaned up all the parts and put the chassis back together. This car will never be perfect without replacing all the plastic (and that wouldn't seem right) but I am very happy with the results

I will hopefully get onto the body next weekend.

I also need to find a battery I can use to give it a blast round the garden when it's done.

I spent some more time on this. Here is a picture after plastic welding the roof supports back in place and patching up the crack on the side.

I then used some Mr sticky's Poly Bonder to strengthen the repairs and sanded them flat.

Here is how it looks after going over the whole body with a butane torch. This changes the chemistry of the plastic and allows paint to stick to it.

And here it is ready for primer.

I got the body primered, sanded flat and painted. It is really beginning to look great. I need to get the roof and spotlights painted next then find some decals.

Does anybody know if the rere decals are the same as the original?
