Tamiya 1/16 KV1

Recommended Posts

Decided to treat myself to a new tank after selling some other projects and unmade kits.

Step into the ring KV1 :D

Plans for this one are some schumo upgrades, an idler support bar and other bits.

Not sure on a colour scheme yet but not in any rush.

Ooh, lovely. I really enjoyed the build on mine. Can't wait to see what you do with yours. I did a light weathering on mine in the traditional color.

Is there some secret store selling Tamiya full option tanks off cheap you aren't telling us about Ad Lav? 😉

Not exactly, although I never pay full uk prices.

eBay for the Tigers - full option one was cheaper than the one with no electrics. Not anymore, switched electrics and sold the yellow one to fund KV1.

eBay for the Leopard, wrongly listed, got a brand new one at a good price...

KV1 new from Germany - euro is weak against the pound!

Not slot happened recently, been waiting for stuff to arrive, then suddenly realised I didn't pay for the up armoured kit hence why it never turned up lol :D

Reinforcing bar turned up from mitosal.

Decided on a specific KV1 - up armoured panels and tri tone camouflage.

The reinforcing bar/chassis brace (photo to follow) is an Impact item from Mitosal. Some KV owners have had chassis twist due to lack of a reinforcing bar where the idlers are. Simple and cheap part made by a reputable company for the Tamiya kit.

Should stiffen the front as the KV is rear sprocket driven.

And so it begins...

Front and rear panels done. Rear light painted with X27 clear red then fitted.

Just about to start the chassis - many screws!

More progress tonight. Despite this taking two hours it covered only one stage!

Loving the new red pot of locktite stuff, much better than a tube.

Busy evening building suspension parts.

Torsion bar stays, rear panel and sprocket covers first.

Torsion bars and swing arms (pita to fit!) I'd forgotten how much of a pain they were, but after a few they went in easier.

It's very similar in construction to a Tamiya Tiger I. Almost as big too!

Last torsion bar, arms and front panel fitted. Fiddly buggars not under tension which is weird, you have to rotate the arm supports to lock them off.

Impact idler arm bar fitted. No instructions so had to do a bit of guess work from pcomms build. Simple once it's in place!

That's coming on nicely Adam. Does the idler have any adjustment mechanism?

Thanks Nic.

You have to undo the two nuts and then twist the idler arm round. Nothing special - says take a link out if too loose.

Couldn't find a henntec adjuster.

Managed to get some time this afternoon to build the return rollers and idlers.

Idlers are cast parts and require bearings, shaft and grease etc.

Sprockets built and fitted along with the rear hull brace/upper hull attachment.

Waiting for some synthetic rubber glue?! And my receiver to continue the build.

A shot with the Tiger shows just how big this tank was!

Coming along nicely.

My KV-2 build is still in progress - delayed this week due to a nasty case of flu :(

Surprised you have not painted the metal parts with primer before assembly ?
