Avante 2001 runner rebuild thread

Recommended Posts

Avante 2001 Build thread!

Bought this week, it was a job lot of loads of tamiya stuff. But it was the little baby Avante I was really after.

I wanted to run it asap so first thing I did was inspect the buggy for damage, none found apart from a couple of the camlocks were broken. Then I had a look at the gearboxes, they looked good so I fitted my ancient rc gear and took it out for a quick spin in the garden.

The 2001 performed well & ran quietly, the sport tuned fitted seemed a bit slow though?

Today, I started to strip it down.

Disassembled the front end then worked my way to the back, I cleaned all the parts as best I could and arranged it in plastic pots so I can build it back up as per the manual, almost as if I'd bought it new 24 years ago :)

Body is a bit rough, no cracks or splits but the paint is flaking, to be fair it does have some character with the vintage Nosram stickers.

Anyway, here it is all organised (in my mind anyway) and ready to build!

Before I started, I had to do this on pretty much every piece.

I've made a start now, steps 1-9 complete.

Cutting off the moulding flash is part of the fun - makes it feel more like a new build! :)

Yeah true, strange that someone would have a model like this and not do it though?

Steps 15-20

This rebuild has been pretty painless so far, especially considering some of my past builds. I'm missing a BA5 screw, it was there when I took it all apart so I'm sure it will turn up later...

Agreed - I understand the Avante 2001 was something special even in the 1990s when it was (presumably) at its most plentiful.

Now, in a decade where it is a little more prized, I find I have fantasized about owning one. This thread will be nice to see the refurbishment of a running example, or at least one that was running prior to the rebuild. It is especially cool to see one with the original white Cam-Loc wheels, as it seems a lot of examples these days have them swapped out for lightweight wheels which I feel are not as nice as these unique items. I wonder if I should paint a set up...

Anticipating the next steps! :)

@Grastens Thanks, body aside it is a really nice example to be fair, boxed with inserts & intructions, completely original model, in running order.

I usually end up with basket cases that cost 3x as much to get back on track, so this makes a welcome change.

Original white wheels are there, they'll need a clean, new camlocs & tires, but I'll cross that bridge on step 40 :)

Step 21-29

These steps basically cover the damper mounts, dampers and front bumper.

I rebuilt the dampers with fresh tamiya soft oil, which is all I had to hand.

Steps 30-34

I decided to upgrade to the DynaTech 01R that was sat doing nothing in my Top Force, which was sat doing nothing on the shelf :)

Was gonna stick with the standard kit sport tuned but it seemed a little slow when I gave it a test run.

Rear gearbox, centre diff & shaft complete, it's coming together now...

***Minor setback***

I took my Avante 2001 out for a spin in the garden and crashed, the front shock tower got broken so I had to order a replacement.

Couldn't find a 2001 version anywhere so I've gone for this Egress one from fibre-lyte.

I'll stick with wide open spaces from now on :)

The build will continue now...

If you wait some time I'm redrawing from and original part the front Avante 2001 shock tower.

I will send the drawings to Fibre Lyte to realise the part for me.

Fyber lyte will yes.. ive had them make several of mh custom designed parts for me. I have my own cnc mill and 3d printer but they are still more casual grade machines so for major structural parts i send my designs to fibre lyte...

@Kaylon - 3D printers and Cnc mills are way to advanced for me, I'm old school haha.

**update**

I've ordered new cam-locs, and a bodyset so I'll have two ;)

Will complete the next steps in the build when they arrive.

I'll be skipping steps 37-39 as that relates to fitting the radio system. I'll be fitting a brushless system in a week or two so that can wait ;)

Steps 40-43

Cam-Loc wheels, wheel hubs & tyres + Wing Stay.

Had to order new F Parts, as 3 of my cam-locs were broken.

New parts

20140910_235829_zps35179e64.jpg

Gave the wheels a quick spin in the dishwasher to bring the whiteness back, unfortunately the tyres aren't great, but will get those replaced soon.

Wing stay

All fitted.

Steps 44-51 body, wing and undertray.

I bought a used body, I've already got one but fancied this one too, I'm sure I've seen it before on TC, any ideas?

Out to play

20140913_102943_zps35abb733.jpg

I resprayed the old shell and gave it some spare stickers :)

Will probably stick the driver figure in this one.

20140913_102402_zps3f330b7b.jpg

If I see a nip one cheap enough I'll buy it, but £45, which I know is the going rate, is too steep imo

Anyway, thanks for reading this thread, hope you enjoyed the rebuild :)

FIN.

Cheers mate, funny how parts get around isn't it.

Shaun is a stickler for box-art, so i knew he wouldn't hang onto the ***** body - glad its found a good TC home.
