Manta Ray slow..?

Recommended Posts

I finally finished restoring my Manta Ray but during the initial test runs it seems quite slow.

I've fitted a hop-up motor mount with a brand new sports tuned, its also full ball raced, so I was expecting it to be reasonably nippy but it just isn't that fast.

I'm wondering if the motor pinion is not lined up correctly due to the after market mount - how free should the transmission feel with a sports tuned motor installed.

By the way, its running a 19t pinion as advised by a couple on here, the motor doesn't seem to be topping out..

Any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

Thanks

You desription suggests the mesh is correct, too loose and you'd lose drive or grinding noises, too tight and the motor would be red hot.

The std motor mount only offer options up to 21T (21T being the standard pinion for silver can) so you could try a 20T or 21T for a bit more top speed but you did say it didnt seem to be topping out, so perhaps its overgeared for the space you have available for acceleration.

Also bear in mind that whilst the sport tuned is a step up from a silver can its still pretty slow if you are used to modern brusless systems of 10T or lower

You should be able to feel the rotor resistance in the magnets if you hold three wheels and turn the free one as the rotor turns but it won't present a lot of resistance. I ran a cheap Ansmann Clash motor in mine (21T) - it was OK (these motors are renowned for not being as fast as you might think but at £7 each they were OK) but nothing earth shattering.

I've built up a Blazing Star over the last 6-7 months, but not run it with its sport tuned yet ( i only just got the decals i've had on order since October ! ).

Sport Tune motors lack Torque to push a 4wd along.

I think It's even stated on the Box. Not recommended for a 4wd

Try a 19T brushed motor for far better performance or better still a 13T brushless combo.

The Superstock RZ/TZ/BZ would probably be a better option, if you don't mind waiting you can get them for £15ish delivered from Banzai

if your "hopup motor mount" can go in 2 ways, not keyed... 1 of those ways is the wrong way

Thanks all - just put the stock motor mount back in and the performance is just the same so it must be as you say, lack of torque.

I'll look in to motor options and upgrade accordingly :)

Sporttuned should be noticeably ~30% quicker than a 540.

I stuck a Hobbywing 9T into my rejuvenated Manta few wks ago. Plenty fast enough, it's got an 18 or 19 pinion I think.

I know what probably is the problem.

Do you use plastic wheel adapters?

If yes you probably over tight the wheel nuts and so the plastic wheel adapters press the ball bearings. Untight the wheel nuts and try the car.

As soon as possible replace them with alloy ones and you will solve it.

my Manta racer did have a Sporttuned in it, went around track none too slow.

Alloy clamp hexes. It does wear 2.2" wheels not the stock 2.0" though.

Good point from Kontemax, familiar problem and good reason for alloys. Test if the wheels turn freely ( if necessary remove mm ain driveshaft and motor)
