This Saturday - I shall be returning home with a Vintage Bruiser.

Recommended Posts

Not sure what to do with it yet. Flog it on eBay as it is. Do a rebuild with new bearings, gears etc. and then flog it - OR - try to sneak it past the wife and keep it next to my Re-Re :P

[Edit:] Changed all thumbnails to medium size for the bandwidth challenged. Link to full size image is below the thumbnail.

How about flogging it (or the re-re, now that you have the vintage one) over some nice inclines and gullies? Although it would be amusing to see how long it can go until she notices!

Picture time. Work is crazy at the moment. It's old - a little Bruised (see what I did there) but overall in decent condition. Only thing missing is the rubber grommets for the gearbox. Still contemplating what to do, but for now, it looks like it stays.

Ohhh - Guess what I paid for it!

I will not ask how much you paid for it, because something tells me I will get incredibly angry/jealous/slack-jawed from whatever crazy bargain you probably scored :P

It does look to be in great shape, though!

I would keep it. I don't particularly like mine as a runner but they are a hugely attractive model to look at. If you got it for a steal it depends whether the money is more important to you or the fact you got a vintage classic for basically nothing. To me getting something for a bargain price makes it all the more worthwhile keeping.

I will say something though, hurry up and finish that Tundra and Clod! B)

No mirror?

It's been rolled a couple of times obvoiusly, so no, no mirrors at the moment. But for £200, what can you expect (:

She's staying. So since that was decided, I accidentally (don't drink and eBay) ordered a set of alloys since the Re-Re is wearing a set. So plan is (subject to change) as follows:

  • Keep lid as it is.
  • Disassemble chassis - clean and whip out the Dremel and go mental with wirewool - not exactly a mirror polish, but somewhere along those lines which will stay nice on the shelf.
  • Alu angle bracket for steering as the plastic part annoys me. (And it's cheap)
  • Re-build suspension. Rear sits almost flat with only a couple of mm of movement.
  • Clean the white plastic parts and give them a couple coats of mat white.
  • New bearings all around.
  • Replace rubber grommets in gearbox.
Things I need to figure out:
  • Gearbox - can't seem to get it to engage first (4 wheel drive), but won't know if I have to do a rebuild until I get some power to it as I don't have enough hands.
  • Screws. Some are a bit shagged, so wondering if I should go all-in and replace with stainless allen heads or stay with stock replacements.
Started a slow strip down today while catching up on WSB and MotoGP (GO ROSSI!)

Since it can't be newer than 23 years - grime cleans right off:

These parts are by NO means done. Initial cleaning with 1200 grit wet and a sponge with soap meant for cleaning pots.

One frame rail left out for comparison (:

[Edit:] A wheel from the "Don't Drink and eBay" accident added with a couple more parts:

[Edit2:] Now I claimed these parts were not close to done - but after a second clean - and some Silvo, they now look like this - don't think I can be ******* to do more to them at the moment:

Are you going to leave them as is or clear coat so they don't tarnish again?

Are you going to leave them as is or clear coat so they don't tarnish again?

Right now, all the pores in the parts are covered in Silvo, so clear coating would require a pretty thorough clean again. But since it won't be sitting in a basement, they won't tarnish like that again. Take it off the shelf and a quick wipe with a dry cloth should remove the inevitable light dusting that happens in the office (:

However. Found another issue. My plan (subject to change etc.) was to stick the dirty gearbox, complete with old silicone gasket but new grommets (1 remaining, the other two holes covered with electrical tape), into the now clean chassis to show it's not a Re-Re. But. As I removed the last remaining grommet last night - only the top came off. The rest decided it wanted to stay inside the gearbox, completely dissolved - which asks the question. Where's the rest of the other two grommets?. So I need to at least open the gearbox to make sure they're not inside. Not that I'll run it, but for peace of mind - also, should it leave my shelf and go somewhere else, nobody else gets a gearbox failure because of them.

And another thought. Now that the chassis parts turned out better than I hoped with minimal effort - Body. Stickers are out of line. Paint is quite meh!. I have the stickers from my Re-Re. All I need is 3 cans of oven cleaner and a can of blue... Hmmmmmm... Decisions Decisions Decisions...

The missing grommets might explain your lack of first gear too...

That is what I suspect as well.

Caved in. Stainless Allen head nut and bolt kit ordered along with aluminium steering bracket. Real life car is being a turd, so no real updates besides the shopping spree. Really looking forward to starting to put this back together.

Also: All the white plastic parts. Bumpers etc., were all covered in white(ish) paint, so have been stripped with oven cleaner. Looking much better, but not exactly white.

Since we've already established I'm a bit daft, I never got around to ordering my Allen head screw set in time for my 2 weeks off, so I'm stuck with cleaning:

Axle parts. Never knew you couldn't replace the bearings on the front axle without a vice. Live and learn I guess.

Also - Didn't know the original didn't have a diff - again. Live and learn :P

Shafts: Should be worn down by the slightest use. Not the case however.

Hubs looks fine with no grinding at all - should be good to go:

Because it is Monday after all - and I'm on vacation (:

I can not emphasize enough, how much I love this chassis

Since it's been sitting for soooooo long, the leafs are a bit tired. Trying to see if this will work, or I have to find a replacement set. Will leave them for a few days and see what happens.

While waiting for parts, and hopefully the leafs to regain a bit of height - all I can do is clean, so here is 4 shocks that cleaned up nicely with only a soapy pot sponge:

Received the bearings for the front axle (Rear has already been put together with sealed bearings), so hopefully I can find use of a vice over the weekend.

Also - all the "white" plastic parts have been given another clean, and have been primed with Plasti-Kote Plastic primer. Hopefully the weather will hold over the weekend, so I can get them sprayed in mat white. Still trying to remove the 23+ years old paint from the body. Quite a bit of work there.

Yet another reply to my own thread

As the weather have been somewhere between rainy/windy and a combo of both, all the paint I've been able to do, is prime the white plastic parts - which uncovered a couple of imperfections (mostly from casting) that I wanted to get rid of - so they'll get another coat this afternoon - weather permitting. Still trying to get rid of the paint on the shell - this afternoon, in the basement, it'll be brakefluid with a brush and some paper towels. Fingers crossed.

Mounted the cleaned tires on the alloys - How could I resist.

[Edit:] Forgot I actually wanted to put an short note in as well. The place across the parking lot at work, is an auction house (Lauritz.com) - where all sorts of people show up to pick up, whatever they've managed to bid on and win. Yesterday - going down for a cigarette - what do I spot?. A 1986 - 80's (of course) green all original Toyota Hilux Crew cab with the period correct fat tires and wheels. Ended up chatting to the owner for a good 10 minutes. I can not believe how much I need one of those in my life now...... :|

Later in the afternoon, there was a brand new black Bentley Convertible in the parking lot - am I wrong for lusting after the Hilux?

This looks like it's going to turn out great when finished, starting to think about getting a vintage to do up myself.

Good luck with the rest of the restoration.

I wish there was a way to watch single posts in every thread. Pictures here are so heavy my bandwidth doesn't allow me to see them :( And the Bruiser is obviously my favorite Tamiya RC model...

Changed all the posts in the thread to only show a medium Imgur thumbnail with a link to full-size image below. Really easy to forget there's still people with DL limits and slow connections - sorry :/

[Edit:] Before editing the posts - managed to get the white parts that was primed, then corrected, primed once more - fingers crossed for decent weather tomorrow so I can shoot some mat white!.
