Super Champ Restoration

Recommended Posts

Ok so this is my first restoration project I've ever done, I'm more of a new in the box builder. I have to say it a bit more enjoyable in some ways resurrecting an old dog than building a new car.

So I picked the car up from a customer of mine who said I could have it, as it had been sat in his garage for as long as he could remember.

As you can see from the photo it needs some love. I pulled the car apart to see what was needed (lots)

After a good scrub to remove thrity years of grime and grit it didn't look into bad a shape, at this point i had some help from a member in the states with a lot of the parts I required to get it back to a roller.

As you can see from the photo I have no upper mechanical deck but I do have a template to remake one. I ordered a sheet of carbon fibre for this, I may make a lower chassis from this as well?

Onto the rebuild when building the gearbox I used some anti wear grease between the mounting face to stop any debris entering the box.

Not to sure if I'm going to run a standard motor a sport tuned motor, it will only ever be run very lightly.

Gearbox and chassis mounted

Front uprights and wishbones all done.

New wheels tyres stainless wheel screws.

She's a roller again, plenty of flex in the lower chassis I guess this is common on these chassis?

Dampers on I used a hydraulic sealent on the caps rather than silicone sealent should be leak free.

Rear shock and oil resevoir fitted, odd design but look cool I think.

Now as you can see from my next photo I have a buggy champ body on the car, Super champ body's are few and far between. So my plan is to chop the back off the buggy champ shell and try to fabricate the super champ rear end(well that's the plan).

Stay tuned folks plenty more to do.

Looking great, loving the looks of these more and more. Reminds me of the one that I found in a lot that I acquired off Ebay. This was years ago, I had no clue what it was, re listed and was quickly purchased BIN for $50, lol. Live and learn.

Ok so today I got a super champ shell and roof in need of some work, but I'm sure with a little magic I can fix it up.

Had a play with some cardboard today to see what the rear end would look like.

Order up some styrene, just hope I can bend and shape it ok.

Nice job on the chassis, will be watching for the body repair, have never built or repaired anything out of styrene, have a couple of broken champ bodies I'd like to save.

Got some time to start on the missing rear end of the shell. This is my very first attempt at working with styrene.

That is looking great, so you started with a Buggy Champ rear section?

He actually fabricated the missing rear end himself with styrene. And it looks impressive!

I look forward to seeing the finished car in its carbon-decked and restored glory!

Thanks for the comments on the shell rebuild, I'm just making it up as I go along. I'm using photo of the web for reference so it's all guess work and not a lot of measuring.

I'm shaping the styrene with a little old hair dryer it's seems to do the trick.

A few photos of the roll cage that I did this evening. I have used the roof for a template along with old busted cage.
