Turning a Traxxas Slash into a on road basher

Recommended Posts

Hey guys - I bought Parma's new Muscle 71 SCT body - it actually is a 1971 Dodge Demon - which I own the 1:1 version - so I want to build a Traxxas Slash to bash on road with - like the real car I will not be building this to handle like a true on road car..

My plan is a drag car basically - will not be very true to the planned build of the real car I have but it will be sweet for sure..

- So first on the list -

Parma body - got - will be painted Plum Crazy Purple or close to that and have scale detailing
Traxxas 2wd slash - no battery kit ($209.99)
Traxxas Tmaxx 14mm hubs
Traxxas funny car glued rear wheels/tires (take 14mm hubs)
Traxxas 76t spur
Robinson racing 31t pinion (have a 27t as well as a few others)
AKA 2wd 2.2" front dish wheels (white - will be cut up into a 5 spoke design and painted Silver)
Pro-line Bar Code front tires
RJ Speed interior

I plan on trying it with the XL5/12T first but plans are probably gonna be putting the Team Associated brushless setup out of my SC10RS in it (XP700/3300kv)- then just share the battery with that and this. Probably tune the suspension for on road duty as well.

What speeds do you guys think it will hit? I'd be happy with 30mph with the XL5/12T and 45mph with the brushless setup

Nice! Always loved the Demon/Duster body style, and it's good to see some interesting options for short-course trucks showing up. With the long suspension travel and relatively high CG, you should get some very realistic body lean in turns. Should be fun.

Now they need to do a '70s Monaco/Fury cop car, so we can re-create movie chase scenes...

And POW! Got it basically done! I won't lie it was hard to start cutting up a brand new RC (hasn't been driven yet) LOL but it was worth it as it will look great I think once done..

I bought Tmaxx 14mm hubs to replace the 12mm Slash one's (funny car wheels use the same hub). I mounted up the front and rear wheels/tires and tossed the body on - the funny car tires are 13mm wider offset than the Slash tires SO I brain stormed for about an hour on how to narrow the rear - My Dad suggested to put it in the "sway bar mount" (I'm guessing that's what it is)

Sadly a lot of the mods are semi permanent - cutting of a few things - and such. I haven't run it yet and am going to try it with the XL5/12T only going up in pinion to a 24t it the setup proves good I may buy a Castle 3S setup for it and design up a scale functioning wheelie bar for it. Only modding to the front was cutting the coil springs 3 coils each rear shocks are stock just took the preload clips out. Let me know what you guys think?

On to the pics!

Here is how I narrowed it - drilled "sway bar mount" tab w/ 1/8" drill bit all the way through and made a divet in the other tab for the pin to lock into - - Had Tamiya TA05 turnbuckles and some Clod ball studs left over and they worked great for shorter upper links! You can see the outer part I cut off the lower arm - it also lowered it quite a bit which is a bonus! also moved the rear blocks forward as well a good 5mm I'd say..

Last one of the body mounted and the final ride height - going to add the Muscle Machines blower to the hood as well!

It goes really good - the new style XL5/12t is faster for sure than the predecessors - spins like crazy indoors so will have to heat the tires for sure before getting on it outdoors.

So here is a over view of what I did to make up for bad pics-

Front -
Cut 3 coils from stock springs (shoulda only done 2 - was building with out the weight of a battery in it oops) so will have to preload up to lift the front back up with a battery in it
Moved shocks to outer hole in lower arms
Drilled and cut front body mounts down (around 1/4" tall)
took SCT front bumper off

Rear -
Moved shocks to outer hole in lower arms - took large preload spacers out
Drilled the inner ("sway bar tab" I'm calling it) w/ a 1/8" drill bit and made a 1/16"- 1/8" divet w/ the bit in the other tab
Cut the stock lower arm up right mount off at the "sway bar" tab
Cut all 4 parts of the drive shafts 1/2" or so (do not cut them while they're together DUH)
Made new upper links from spare parts I had sitting around (can get the link length for anyone looking to try this)
Lowered body mounts all the way down
Took SCT rear bumper off

Also found out on the test run in my living room - it tips easy so the LCG chassis kit might happen as well LOL

Maiden voyage was a success! goes pretty good - I broke the 12T in - in water and had a basically fresh charged 5000 20C 2S on it - tires started smoking during the burn out haha launches real good with hot tires - it will pull wheelies so I'll be really thinking of a wheelie bar system here

I plan on semi locking the dif I think as well as going brushless and 3S power.. and it needs the LCG chassis as well it dives hard on braking and the back end comes around on it..

Anyone know of softer springs? The rears are a little hard and it seems to nose over and lose traction off the launch..

Hey guys sorry for the hiatus! I went to Fargo (3 hour round trip) yesterday after work.. bought my cousins Jato 3.3 for $200 pretty much complete - I'll start a thread on that this weekend! Going to tear it down, clean, and reassemble it. Then post it for sale!

Yes the Demon body might be a tad smaller I think plus the funny car tires are 0 backspace - the stock Slash tires didn't fit when the whole thing was stock OOTB. So there was no way this was going to work with out cutting the arms..

Anyway on to the Slash! - Got my omnimodels parts order yesterday! installed most everything last night (up til 12am LOL). I need to get a new ESC/motor combo though as 1. the AE systems wires are to short 2. the throttle is backwards from what it's supposed to be. I also lost an "E" clip from the front left arm king pin (anyone got an extra I can buy)

here is the new setup -

Chassis -
Traxxas LCG kit

Front -
Pro-line Protrac front arms
camber links are the old stock rear links (direct fit)
tie rods are traxxas Slash ends and HPI M4x83mm links (need 3mm or so trimmed off total) as they bottm out and have a tad to much toe-in but it's tolerable to me
stock LCG kit springs w/ 1 upper spring cup flipped and 1 small preload spacer
Still need to figure out a hex system for the front so the wheels are easier to get on/off

Rear -
stock lower arms (ends cut off to nitro shock mounts/ 16-18mm) - 1/8" drill bit used in nitro shock mount (through both tabs)
Arrma pnAR330144 hinge pins through uprights
Tamiya shock pistons used as spacers for rear uprights (moved wheelbase forward)
Tamiya 28mm turnbuckle/ rod ends/ 5mm ball studs - a 34mm or so link and 19mm ball ends would be better as these barely work
drive shafts cut over 1/2" (trim as needed)
STRC Slash 14mm hubs
Slash Orange -20% springs no preload
0 camber

PICS! I'll be painting the body this weekend pending I like the Purple I got for it..

The wheelie bar I made has a spring action just like a 1:1 car so if it lifts the front tires the wheelie bar will not slap the ground - undloading the rear tires. I will look into that wheelie bar though.. If I get more power in it I will probably change to 32p gears.. this should be good for now..

PICS!

TEASER! It's not done yet, still needs a cleaning and detailing on the outside, as well as make the stock Demon decals that go down the side of the car - looks Blue but is in fact Tamiya Purple - looks SICK I think!

Test run videos are here! Again these are pre-detailing the outside (thank god) - it went well-ish lol it flipped 2 twice - second time was bad - slid on the roof for about 10ft into my yard - broke the supercharger (fixable) the wheelie bar works and is still in one piece LOL it acts just like a real car spins while rolling haha - gets pretty violent pretty quick - I won't need to do much with gearing as it's so unstable at speed even with the LCG chassis I think I need to make a front air dam so less air gets under the body. I also had to tighten the slipper as it was spinning pretty bad but helped launching it - so I'll be playing with that..

Hopefully I can get my coworker to talk with the local HS and let me run it in the open gym lol traction is the name of the game here and this thing gets NONE when it's cold out! (30* outside right now)

Test run 1

Test run 2

Test run 3 + 1st crash

Few pre-run pics - first is doing a burn out which it has 0 problem doing now LOL

I had my car out once this year, after doing some tuning, fried the ESC after about 20 minutes of running even with a fan on it.. LOL it's a BEAST - I couldn't top it out on my road.. so I did a trade for another slash that I can't resell so I'm looking into parting it out and making another one of these! Here is the plan -

Both with be matched to the first and add these parts to both-

Castle SV3 5700kv on 3s power
2075 servos
HPI 2.4 radio's (like them for manual trim controls)
Parma Nova body
Parma Demon body (new one)

edited just now -
Well plans changed - and came up with new ideas! Mostly to save money and make a better chassis(s)..

Redesigning the wheelie bar system (going to be simple and yet a work of art LOL)
Getting 2 SV3 ESC's and running the current AE 3300kv motors

Front bulkhead
Front pin brace
Front caster blocks
Front spindles
Steering rack
12mm hubs
Front 6mm shock tower
Shock caps
Threaded shock bodies

Hardened CVD's (using B44 bones for the narrowed rear!)

Castle SV3 5700kv combo (have had it)
Castle ESC fan
Traxxas LCG black chassis
RPM ESC cage for SV3 in Slash
Futaba 1" aluminum servo arm
Lunsford 1.5" M3 titanium turn buckles (rear camber)
DE Racing Burrego Silver 2.2 12mm hex buggy wheels (finally be easy to install/remove the front wheels!)
AE DS1903MG servo (have - less torque but 5 grams heavier than 2075)
RcReaper 7" aluminum adjustable wheelie bar
Spektrum DX3 radio (have)
New Parma Muscle 71 body that will be done up as my friends 71 Demon (DMX Demon - was on Street Outlaws NOLA)
