Awesome Off-road Photos from 1980!

Recommended Posts

Thought some of you guys would enjoy having a look at some offroad photos taken at Pismo Beach, CA in good old 1980. SOOO COOL!

Can you spot the 1:1 Sand Scorcher in the 1st pic, with front Blaster tires and Paddlatracks in the back? Just WOW!

Ah, the glory days... before smartphones and the internet (and rules about driving on the beach ;o) - yet thousands of people still managed to get together and have fun!

I love those ATC trikes - that was the first 'motorbike' (along with a Z50R) I ever rode... happy days ;o)

Thanks for sharing the photos!

Bet you are all over those two Honda trikes, Erich! ;)

Actually, the Kyosho Sand Skipper is what really caught my attention.

Thanks for sharing those!

Now, as cool as it looks, can you imagine how cool it sounds?

LOUD AND CLEAR. Pretty much like a pulling show in some arena somewhere. :)

My guess is that it's "just" a Tonka Jeep, or actually the version of it dubbed the "Dune Buggy":

I really had to do a double-take b/c that 2nd pic looked like all scale R/Cs!

Must have backed out of wearing the mankini because of possible sand rash.

These photos are so great, thanks for sharing.

What was it about that era? The real vehicles played a big role in making the toys look so good. All the buggies and other vehicles look great. There's a simplicity to them - clean lines, bright and simple colours, fat tyres. It seems like the quintessential era of buggy style. As they evolved in capability (to what we have today) they seem to have lost something (and so did the toys).

Realism. That's what is lost for good.

If you're on facebook, check out the above page. Fantastic history and you definitely learn some new terms. For me I dig the 'water pumpers'. What's a water pumper ? That bad *** red rig in the foreground of the last pic from Mongoose1983. It's basically a hot rod for the sand with a front mounted water cooled motor and they pre-date the vw based dune buggy.
