Optima Mid-based Vauxhall Astra rally car

Recommended Posts

Wanted to do this for a while, and I've finally gotten around to it. I love how the Mid runs, but I've never been much of a fan of the body, or of how it fits (or rather, doesn't).

So when I found this Parma Vauxhall Astra body on eBay for cheap, I knew what I had to do.

Modified some old JG body mounts, added Corally screw-type body posts, and trimmed it out:

I found this image that I really liked, so I decided to use it as inspiration:

Three parts Faskolor yellow, one part orange seems to have done the trick:

And that's where it sits now. Still a few details to add, but not much; this is meant to be run. Action shots to follow, when it's not 95+F outside...

I couldn't resist; I braved the heat and popped outside for a quick run...

It looks fantastic in motion, but it's almost... dare I say it... boring to drive. It goes exactly where I point it, and nothing much seems to faze it.

Which means only one thing... it needs MORE POWER.

That's brilliant. Exactly where we were 25 odd years ago before the touring car revolution.

I do like the optima mid body though ;)

Yep, I built one back then too, out of a Manta Ray and a Parma Celica GT4 body. :)
