Ebay seller pushing up price with 2nd ebay account!

Recommended Posts

I was checking Tamiya listings as I do and I noticed a well used Hotshot with an unusually high bid price, When I checked other items sold by bmxmad72 I found that ALL of those items had bids from the same buyer pushing the price up <_<

One doesn't have this problem with 'Buy It Now' :D

It's called 'Shill Bidding' and it's one of the more easlly reported things on eBay (just banged 'em one over)

Yup, looks like l***t (22) has been doing him a lot of favours,

Item number:331646360555
Item number:s.gif331603791344

Item number:s.gif331670395773
Item number: 331668847533 (Still live at time of posting)

Whilst it's practically impossible to get a bidder's ID now, their current bid history shows they bid 100% of their bids on bmxmad72

Would not surprise me it's the same person . With two accounts .

I have seen this alot , This is what Ebay should be fixing !!! & not fixing there Ebay pockets .

This is why you have too , look at who has bid etc ...

I have found that out the hard way , Years ago .

eBay has no incentive to fix this. Higher final value fees means more money in their pockets

They don't get any fees if the 'buyer' doesn't pay as the seller requests a credit for fees.

The buyer gets a NPB strike, but the seller's got it on his record (for a year anyway) that he is involved with shill bids.

Shill bidding's been talked about since the early days of TC (see link further down)
As long as bidders think eBay's a safe, cosy place to buy then some sellers will try it.

I'm not sure if eBay still apply fees for start prices or reserve pricing, but shill bidding used to be a way of avoiding the fees - Apparently, one started an auction at £0.01 to get lowest insertion fees, then got a mate to bid whatever the seller considered a reasonable price to be which avoided the reserve price listing fee.

The only risk was subsequent bidders may not exceed the 'mate reserve' in which case the seller would have to relist the item; http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=19845#entry118615

Shill bidding used to be dead easy to spot as a lot of 'eastern' sellers used it and every shill account had 11 or 12 positive feedback - not sure why 11/12 was the magic number but it always made me check the situation at that point.

You could even discover 11 or 12 shill-bid accounts too, as they all left each other feedback

Hmmm, that negative feedback has been repaired now, seems he has 100% Great feedback ONLY positive.HMMMMM

eBay help sellers by deleting negative or neutral comments if the do not fit a normal pattern of your selling.

I got an email a couple of months ago to say they had removed a neutral one from mine I would have been happy to have stayed.

If the 'buyer' that left the negative never paid for the item (and it's unlikely they paid seeing as they were 'outing' the seller) then the transaction is void, so the feedback would be too.

I wonder how much money ebay would have to give back, if all of the shill bidding ever done could be proven?

On another forum I am a member of, these people are posted about with pretty damning evidence of their shill bidding activities, a group of us would jam the price up rediculously high to the point the seller knew he had been rumbled and pulled the auction or gave up shill bidding.
