fitting a brushless set up into a hilux 4 x 4

Recommended Posts

some people will call it sacrolidge but I play with mine, my hilux 4 x 4 that is and have been thinking of putting a brushless setup into it however there are so many to choose from, can anyone make any suggestions

I am just wondering why the desire for the brushless system. I doubt speed as that probably wouldn't be a good idea. Now in terms of efficiency, I can see that but I would assume that a radio with EPA would be a good idea to keep the speed to a manageable, safe level. Again, just curious.

You can get brushless systems slower than a silver can 540, so that would be fine. . Do these things have a 750 can though?

The Hilux 4x4 does not; it was the Bruiser and the Mountaineer that had the 750 motor.

As for motor: would something at 2200 kV work? I am not that familiar with brushless ratings.

I believe reading back when brushless started gaining traction that the number of turns on a brushless was very roughly equivalent to twice that many turns on a brushed motor. Say an 8.5t brushless would be about 16t brushed

If you want something to replace the silver can motor then look for a 17.5t sensored set up, for something slower then 21.5t.

You'll need sensored system to prevent cogging at low speeds.

Dependent upon where you run you might also want to look for a waterproof set up.

Regarding Bruisers and Mountaineers; Are 1/8 brushless motors the same size as the 750?

@2435Mick: I'm really exited to see how your project turns out. Are you planning to give the Hilux a speed boost or just update the electronics?

No matter what you do, there are too few Hilux videos out there; I would love to see how yours does.

PS. I do happen to have a couple of spare speed passion motors in 17.5 and 21.5T if you wanted to save a bit of money. Just buy a suitable ESC (I'd suggest one you can programme easily for drag brake etc, and either one with good BEC current rating or use a separate ubec of 5A to drive the servo.)

If you want to see what a 2000KV 1/8 motor goes like have a look at these:

They are with 3S though, 2S is considerably slower.

I don't think low turn brush or brushless makes that much difference and I'll tell you why.

You can control the speed with the esc through your radio; i don't think you will be doing any serious crawling where torque will be an issue so a low turn motor will let you do some wheel spin should you want to kick some dirt up. Of course if you want long run time using you existing battery a high turn motor will help. Than you can buy those 10 million mAh battery and run it unit you need glasses. :D I still run bush is because i can still use my existing ESC and not spend any more. If am just starting, i would go brushless or maybe not because brush motor and the esc are cheaper.

The main reason I am looking at the conversion is not for speed (4 x 4s are not intended for that purpose), I am looking at 2 cell lipos (just got two today from Hobbyking, 5000mah which fit into the water resistant box with loads of room to spare (I could double up to 10000mah theres that much room :) ) https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__34306__Turnigy_nano_tech_5000mah_2S3P_30_60C_Hardcase_Saddle_Lipo_Pack_ROAR_APPROVED_UK_Warehouse_.html

so duration should be better than the old 6v 4ah battery, slightly faster 'cos of the extra 1.4v (but also considering the extra wear and tear!) , the other area being the reliability and smoothness of a true electronic speed controller unlike the original giving increased proportionality both forwards and backwards.

I will add that I purchased my Hilux around 1981, refurbd it about 5 years ago by getting all the original chrome bits re-chromed due to rusting, she now runs totally ball raced except for one bearing in the gearbox which was on the 'too hard to do' list.

I have updated the servos with metal geared ballraced items (in 1982 basic servos cost £20 upwards!) so todays items are mega cheap and better.

I will post a video(s) at some point in the near future.

Does anyone have a rear body for the Hilux, unfortunately I lost mine in a house move around 8 years ago :(

Reproduction parts should be available online, from the same individual making Audi Quattro parts ;)
