Recommended Posts

I Dont run any nitros so this is a bit out of my area

Thats a Tamiya TG10 mk1. And going by the wheels and engine pinion cover, its a Subaru Impreza 99 edition version too. :) Nice cars and very solid. Looks to have a Tamiya upgrade exhaust too, as the standard exhaust exited from the rear via a rubber tube onto the rear bumper.

Nice find, i used to run a Raybrig nsx 98 TG10 years and years ago, very easy to work on and despite the engine, very very similar to a TB01 :)

Going by the look of it , its had a hard life. Stip, clean, rebuild, get an air cleaner on there and a new glow plug, and run it rich on idle for a few tanks of fuel ( under no load, i.e. on a stand) to re lube the engine. T hen should be good to go, engine are very reliable in these and take lots of abuse.

Thanks for the fast reply

Any Idea how old this would be?

I doubt I will try getting it running.

I don't have any nitro experience

The Impreza 99 is the give away bud, ;) 1999/2000 is the year of release.

Like I said, strip clean, rebuild then run the engine rich for 2 tanks of nitro fuel. And she is good to go. 2 strong servos and by the looks of it it already has a failsafe unit fitted (orange box) :)

If you dont want it, then by all means i may be interested in it. :)

Hmmmmm

Is old nitro fuel still ok to use? its over 10 years old.

Would the Subaru 99 shell still be available? as I might see what the cost is to get this as a runner

I would personally get new nitro fuel tbh. The Impreza 99 body is the same as the Impreza wrc body used on the TL01 and Ta03f, just a different decal set. But yes they do pop up on ebay now and then.

Get a can of those nitro cleaner and a paint and tooth brush for a good cleaning without taking every apart. but make sure you wear gloves, those clean is not too good for you.

If you have the time and abit of money, a good opportunity to learn about nitro. You'll need a new glod plug / spart plug, a glod starter and fresh fuel. At worst a glod engine. Nitro is another dimension to rc. The sound and smell are a turn on to some. The learning curve could be steep

if the crankshaft rotates freely and offers resistance during the compression stroke then it should run , there is no air filter so i would check the venturi on the carb ( tapered hole that the air is sucked in through ) , any small grit or dirt particles is an indication that it has been run without a filter , if this is the case then strip and clean the engine , it's easy as these simple two cycle engines have only a few moving parts , crankshaft , con rod , piston and sleeve , keep an eye out when you remove the cooling head as there may be shims between it and the block that are essential to give the correct 'burn space' , if the crankshaft bearings are anything other than silky smooth they should be replaced , its a pain but can be done with a little heat and care ,

its counter intuitive but go for higher nitro content fuel as it burns cooler , 20% being ideal in the OS made tamiya engines ,

have fun

;)

I have decided I will try getting this running again.

I have ordered

1 litre of fuel

a glow plug

air filter

nitro cleaner

and a nitro starter kit, with the glow start heat unit.

Have also sent off for the Tg10 mk1 manual (I like hard copies for all my cars)

I will strip the car, clean and rebuild

For a FREE car this is costing some money lol

Also with these older nitro cars do not pull the recoil to hard - I had a Kyosho pureten nitro (.12) 65 Cobra Daytona Coupe that I pulled the recoil right out of.. :(

That is great. I am sure many TC members here can provide answers and or suggestions should any situations arrive.
The good part is that most of the items you purchased can be used on your future nitro rc.

Thanks for the offer of help guys.

I am sure I will be picking some brains when I try to get this actually running.

Until I start to strip the car down I will not know if any parts are damaged

I found some new rally tyres in my stash

I will strip the engine down after the nitro cleaner arrives.

all the plastic bits are in a bucket and having a soak of washing up liquid

Looks like you got a real dog's breakfast. But i think will turn into a gem once the parts are cleaned and perhaps some new parts.

once you get this ugly duckling going, you will be a nitro expert and start issuing dos and don'ts.

look forward to the out come and thank you for taking the time and effort to keep us up to date.

All those plastics will be pretty good under that nitro grease and dirt -it'll be a big job to get it clean but I doubt you'll need many parts for the rebuild.

Nice to see it has a two speed tranny in it. Had them on all my nitro Tamiya tourers. Make sure the clutch is not too tight so the 1st to 2nd gear shift is smooth.

Very nice Supra highflyer.

your mark 2 is completely different to a mark 1 as the motor is on the opposite side, most interesting

engine has not been stripped, just the outside cleaned up.

All diffs and gears have been stripped cleaned and regreased

Ball races fitted instead of the original brass bushings

Have still got to check to see if any of the radio gear works yet, i just refitted it to get the pics

As said thats got the optional 2 speed transmission :) nice. Used to love running my tg10mk1, its a heavy nitro car compared to competitors but its like a tank.

Before i had my failsafe installed i remember mines took off on a practice run and hit a side board at full throttle, all that was damaged was the body and 1 damper :)

Photos say it all - a different car now - great result for no doubt many hours scrubbing !

Convert it to brushless!

I did that with a TG-10 Mk1 Lancia Delta, fitting a EZRun/Hobbyking 9T system - its rather rapid now, 4 wheel drifts are easy even on sticky rubber on dry tarmac :D

The only problem is finding a suitable motor mount and a means to protect the spur and pinion from debris.
