Toyota Land cruiser CR-01 build

Recommended Posts

toyotalogo_zps9ed55046.png

So i finally prioritized to get myself a crawler, I wanted a "real" crawler after i got my lego crawler and saw how much fun it was.

I decided to go for the CR-01 with the Land cruiser body, since I have always thought that it's a nice looking car.

Must say that I was amazed how big the box is, this car is going to be quite big.

The hop-up's I'm going to use. (not the thundershot spoiler and BZ motor)

I didn't like that the chassis beams were in plain metal color, since that is not the case in real life, so I painted them gun metal

Didn't get to much build time today, because I was with my mother in law looking and buying a her a new used car, a MG F. Gonna be fun to borrow it on a sunny summer day :)

Step 4

I forgot to mount the stabilizator stag on this one, so i had to take it apart and mount it one more time. :P

Step 5

Realized after I had built these ones that there is hop-up's for these as well so I ordered them. They also has lock diff, which I think will be good for crawling, any experience with it?

step 6

20140512_232106_zpstq1h2gge.jpg

After looking in the manual I saw that I was short of some hop-up's since I'm going to make the car 4WS. I also needed 4 more king pins, I'm to used thinking the buggy way so i ordered only 4 the first time around :P In addition I also had to order a hi torque servo saver.

So you ordered the hopup chrome chassis beams and painted those black?

The diff lockers work nicely also the provided axles are stronger

Yeah, I did so :P I thought that it was plastic beams in the kit. I could have painted the ones in the kit gun metal, but it didn't cross my mind :D

That is great to hear, then I will definitely mount them.

Yeah, that I also must say that they do compared to the stock one's. My guess is that Banzai could make you happy again, at least they will try :-)

Still waiting for some parts, so decided to jump to some steps that I could actually do. So I built the hop-up dampers.

Go for it :)

There is an insane amount of hop-ups and aftermarket parts for this model. I guess you could just get the build manual and build the hole car just from hop-ups and aftermarket parts.

I admit CR-01 is not my favour 4x4 from Tamiya, but the photo build does grow on me and gap has narrowed. I believe these build will push a fence seater deciding to buy or not to buy over to the buy side.

Just realized TC build forum is similar to TV car shows where the audience get to watch the car put together step-by-step and is good viewing.

Waiting for an update progress build soon. :)

The rocksocker is listed at Seidel 20% cheaper than the 'old' CRs <_<

I to must admit and when I first saw this model I didn't like to much me either, but it did grow on me until I just had to get one :)

I really hope you decide to get one, i'm not 100% sure but almost that it's a car which will give many hours of fun driving. Maybe we should get discovery to make a series for (custom) rc car building :P

by the way, got allot of things going on this week, so I guess I can't get any time to build until next week :(

So today a package from Banzai Hobby was waiting for me :-) Didn't get two aluminum servo mounts as i wanted, so one must do for now.

Now i should have all the parts i need to finish this build the way i want to, that said i got a very nice roof rack on the way to me via mail. I got the waterproof servos that I'm going to use from HobbyKing a few days ago.

I built a CR-01 a while ago but yours is much nicer! Love all the hop-ups and your photography is brilliant. Your enthusiasm and enjoyment come through loud and clear. Keep up the good work ;)

Thanks IBIFTKH, I really like building this one, and can't wait to get some time to continue the build.

Then you could just start buying some hop-ups and upgrade :)

I sold my original CR-01 but recently bought another. It's used so it needs a little tidying up. I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to do with it yet but you can almost guarantee it won't be stock :)

I'm looking forward to your next instalment(s)...

I am still leaning towards a 4 dr. hard top Jeep Rubicon by Axial. Your CR will be more capable. I would consider CR if my room is not the size of your walk in closet. :( I recall there was another TC member did a CR-01 build few months back or maybe in late 2013 and his too was an interesting build..
