Kyosho Scorpion 2014 build

Recommended Posts

I made a spur of the moment decision when I seen Kyosho re-re'd the Scorpion and fell in love with it - Got it from RPP hobby + a can of PS-6 Tamiya Yellow for $210 shipped!

Plan for it is - Traxxas XL2.5 ESC, vintage Trinity Speed Gems 2 17T or 19T brushed motor, and a lipo - oh and a semi box art paint/decal job -

(this isn't the one I built LOL)

Ya! I honestly wanted a RC10 classic but at $340 I just couldn't do it, I can't wait -hopefully it will keep up with my friends modern brushless RC10 4.1 haha - I only plan to upgrade a few things - Alloy servo arm, RC4WD threaded links for steering links, and the electronics MAYBE some vintage Prolines!

I have 2.5 projects at once right now (also building a Axial SCX10 2009 Jeep scaler right now) and planning a clodbuster build of some sort as well (have axles/wheels/tires/motors/ and a stock chassis) lol

This one is going straight to the front of the line for sure though! From video's I have seen on Youtube these buggies FLY with a lower turn motor in them!

Well, you'll probably be able to find some RC10 much cheaper later on in a couple of years now. Myself, as much as I like the Scorpion, I will wait a couple of years to find one cheap.

Anyone have one of these they could measure the long steering rod for me? I am planning a order for some threaded links and can't find the measurement anywhere..

7.4 cm

Are you sure? That's only 74mm I need the measurement to the longest one from the servo to the servo saver - the manual doesn't give a measurement or a 1:1 picture of it just a part number

Well got the solid links ordered! - I ordered 3x6x10mm spacers for the tie rods and front upper links - and a 140mm/33mm links for the longest - will be shimming with m3 flat washers to the as per directions dimensions

I'll be using the stock Kyosho rod ends and links in the front (slide spacers over stock links)and I plan to use a Traxxas 2070 servo so the added weight shouldn't be much of a issue..

Well one more small order made -

***** stock Scorpion lexan rear wing

Traxxas 2070 servo

Axial 7.5mm x 1.5mm O rings

Tamiya ORV rear drive shaft boots

(going to attempt to put the ORV axle boots on the Kyosho shafts with the O rings to hold them on the big end and shock O rings to hold them on the small end)

This is the final order til I get paid after the 15th - then a LED kit, light buckets, tires, maybe a few other small pieces

Got the kit and my RC4WD order! I decided to assemble the main chassis with the rear shock tower screwed to it and paint it semi gloss black to match the plastic roll bar.. I'll post pics tonight or tomorrow after work!

Haven't done much it's getting cold out so paint is taking over night! Got my Traxxas 2070 servo - I made a wrong measurement on my long steering rod so I am going to use a M3 turn buckle from my TA05 kit to make it work (I think LOL) -

Also found out the long rod is M2.6mm diameter not M3 and tried to drill the Kyosho ends out for M3 screws but busted one - SO upgrade! I had happened to have 2 TRF rod ends and a ball stud that work so the crisis was averted YAY!

Got the dif installed in the trans and greased and also cleaned the Trinity SG2 Sapphire motor up w/ new AE serrated brushes and trued the com a little

The chassis had some light spots so I took the rear shock tower off it and gave it a final thick coat just now - hopefully it will be handle-able by 8pm or so to start assembling everything for the final time!

Will post pics tonight of what I have..

With the black chassis rails it looks GORGEOUS!

I always loved the look of those rear tires. The Scorpion looks fantastic!

I agree! I messed the body color up though so I plan on ordering a new body and the Red tub and going Red with it which I like more than the box art Yellow and will be easier to match as well

Took it out for it's first test drive on a dead 2S and it goes pretty good needs to be faster though - the battery is still charging so we'll see here in a bit how good it goes..

Found out the hard way the ORV boots don't fit at all so that also sucks and the left side dog bone needed some grinding on each end as it was binding in the cups through the suspension travel.

Also had to add a ton of preload to the rear springs as the directions preload measure ment is not enough when fully loaded with electronics (3mm - I went to 10mm) and it is much better - then again I modded my rear shocks - drilled 2 holes in the piston and am running AE 50wt oil - ae 30wt oil in the front with 1 hole pistons

Did you run that Scorpion yet?

Yes I did - it HAULS lol - I found out the vintage motor has well had it' as they say - it made the ESC thermal even with the body off and the ESC out in the open - I bought a Duratrax 20t motor finally but have yet to install it - I am kinda waiting til I can get the Red plastics and a new body..
