Recommended Posts

Finally received my City turbo It arrived in less than 10 days.. That was pretty quick shipping from Asia. I ordered extra wheels & tires even before it arrived. Needed some tires for the original wheeler too. :)

Go on then, give us a clue. Where are the alloy bits from? Not started my "vanilla" build yet and already you are tempting me.

Tempting alloy bits.... :) Bought it from eb_y wr02 alloy if your searching..

The alloy part on the left side of the pic is made by someone i forgot who exactly it was.. He just offered me those. Bought it originally for the wild willy 2 but never used it. I had it for more than a year already.

The angled alloy is a factory part its in your parts bag. :) I had to ask somebody before regarding that.

I was playing with the front tire and noticed the knuckles were really wobbly.. It would go side to side i wondered why it was like that.

Found out the bearing were the wrong size when i replaced it with alloy knuckles... I guess that's what you get when you change the knuckles at 4am in the morning.... :D:D

As you can see on the pic the axle is leaning on one side...

Yeah they are so fun to look at and cute!! :):) The alloy bits are available since the chassis is shared with a few models ;)

Thank you! Didn't do anything special on the body.

-sanded most of the mould lines.

-make sure to clean the body inside out with soap/detergent & water..

-wipe clean with a new microfiber cloth or equivalent

-don't paint in direct sunlight shaded area would be great

-put the body on top of an small old box so you can work around the body. Smaller box that fits the inside roof area would be enough.

-if painting outside the garden or open area make sure the wind is not blowing.. You don't want all the dust in your paint..

- do a very light coat in the first coating... be patient wait..... :D

-few minutes later do another light coat.. wait again... :D

-paint the corners & hidden areas first with a light coat example: wheel wells, sharp corners, headlights, wait again... :D

- paint in gentle continous strokes like swaying left to right.. wait longer... you will paint this stage thicker.... :D

-2-3 coats with waiting time each coat...

-check if you have missed any areas..

-Let the paint dry.. :rolleyes::D

I have 3 coats on the body no clear coat on it. Some would paint clear after to make it more shiny. This will be my runner body right now.

I might paint another one a different color hopefully its turns out ok..

Hope this helps..

Thanks for taking the time to post that, how long are you waiting in between coats, 5-10mins?

This is pretty much what I've been doing, but what paint are you using to get such a good gloss finish without a clear (or is the picture taken wet)? Are you using rattle can or airbrush?

Cheers

Your most welcome! Paint was already dry when i took the picture. :)

5 mins in between coats will be sufficient. On the last few final coats closer to 10 minutes would be better.

I used Tamiya rattle can paint for that one it was really old paint i bought from a closing hobby shop.. There were times paint would not come out of the can.. Almost panicked that i would ruin the paint job..

Surprisingly it came out glossy.. :):) I know if you used airbrush most of the times it would be glossy finish..

One more tip when you spray the last few coats spray to the right then spray to the left that is 2 passes. Makes the paint a little thicker & you will see the paint go shiny... Make sure not to paint too close of your going to get paint runs.5-6 inches away would be good..

I got kitted up with an airbrush at xmas (Iwata 0,5 nozzle TH) because I wanted to take my finishes to the next level. So far I've painted two shells, one is a bit of a disaster but I've learnt an awful lot from it, the other is work in progress. I'm using Auto Air water based paints which need to be sealed with a clear coating otherwise the coat will be easily damaged. I've been applying the final control coat in one direction only to control the metal flakes for a uniform pattern when you look down the flank, but earlier coats are back and forth as you describe.

My method thus far...

Cleaning the mould lines and imperfections with wet and dry 1000 grit or coarser if necessary.

Washing in detergent and allow to dry

Then airbrushing the following;

1. an adhesion promoter (Churchill paints plastic primer) which basically etches the shell. 1 medium wet coat - 30 minutes dry.

2. Auto Air Sealer (water based - white or black depending on top coat) mist +1 or 2 coats, 5mins from mist, 10 mins between coats.

3. Auto Air Top coat (water based - two mist coats, then a medium then a heavier coat. Leave for a few days. (not sure if that last bit is necessary)

4. Automotive Clear coat 1K churchill paint (thinned with 20-30% thinners) mist coat x 2, 5 mins then medium coat, then wet coat 10 mins x 2. I let the clear coats go off for a week or so before touching the shell.

I've tested clearing over decals, first attempt looked great but a day later the decal had shrivelled I guess from where the thinners evaporated and the coat had shrunk back a bit taking the decal with it. I'm experimenting on another area of the shell by putting down a couple of fine mist coats, leaving to dry for a couple of days before attempting a medium coat and doing the same, before finally going for the wet coat! We'll see if that works!

Cheers

Nito

Deciding if i should do decals or not.? Hmmmm.....

Most of the decals would go with that color, but maybe not the red stripes... Are the "Turbo" letters separate from the stripes? I haven't looked at my decal sheet yet. Might look nice with just those?

The 'Turbo' script is part of the stripes on the re-release sheet. That being said, some careful cutting can isolate it...

Nice build, and a great colour! I think it will still look good with the box-art stripes.
