So what's the best way to discharge a lipo fast?

Recommended Posts

Bought a soft pack 7.4 2S lipo recently for an Airsoft gun I have. I know soft packs aren't the best but there's so little room in the gun it can't move around and it's fully protected in its compartment. Got the battery for an EBay seller in Honkers and was sent airmail, arrived nice and quick, tested and charged it all checked out fine and fits like a glove in the gun 😉

So good in fact I ordered a 2nd battery to make sure I'm covered for a full day of shooting teenagers without worry 😏

That 2nd battery arrived this morning and first thing I did after opening the pack was inspect it for signs of damage (all good) and hook it up to my voltage tester... Uh-oh! #1 cell showed 5.59v & the #2 cell showed 0.95v! After just a few mins that changed to 5.71 & 0.86.

Being a cautious man it's now at the bottom on my garden in a ceramic pot, inside my chimenia 😬 I've check the tester on other known to be working lipos and it's fine. So I've contacted the seller looking for a refund/replacement and asked them what do they want done with the old battery.

So how can I discharge this duff one without risking any damage done to my charger or house for that matter? Gotta say if the seller wants it back in not prepared to send this thing anywhere, especially via airmail!

I have a rack of 5 interior light bulbs wired to a Deans for such situations, or, if I bin a plane and the battery gets deformed... Basically, in the salty pot of resistance, bulbs hanging over the edge drains them down.

This has come in handy once... had a 3s 3300, fully charged to maiden a plane. The manual recommended center of gravity was so off, it went up, and pretty much came down as it was that badly mannered, I had to just stick it in. The battery tried to go through the motor and became quite flanged... It appeared stable for the rest of the day, but it rode home on the passenger seat in a lipo sack with the window down for emergency ejection lol. So, it went straight into the tub of death with the light rack attached, and within 5 minutes one of the cells dumped it's contents, under water, so no drama, just a squirt of lithium paste.

That's a good idea. Based on that I've quickly soldered up an old motor to a connector from the spares box to run off the power.

Tested it again just before hooking up and all 7.15v were now in the first cell, 2nd cell was showing 0.0v. I think it could've been a short in the balance cable wiring as it was glitching when I tried to take a reading and now won't show anything!

Yeah, someone's done a friday job. And no one wants a lipo with an intermittent short :P

It definitely is a glitch in the balance wire (middle wire cut, since you read entire battery voltage on a random cell) or connector.
